Honestly, a lot of these technical errors weren't her fault (as was shown in the actual movie, Don was having a lot of the same audio problems with his scene) --also funny that no one ever also accuses Don of being a diva when he insisted on changing his lines to just "I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you," etc. They are both absolutely divas. But there is only so much an actor can do, Lina or Don, when microphone placement is just bad. They can't just talk into their shoulder or into a bush for the whole movie. As for her voice, her voice is actually really cute. It's very similar to Betty Boop or Harley Quinn. And she was fine with it. She said she liked her voice, she never asked for them to change it or dub her; they did it without her permission, didn't tell her they were doing it, didn't plan on telling her at all, and then to top it off, they were going to humiliate her by 1. dubbing her and letting her find out when the movie was released and 2. letting everyone else watching the movie know that she was dubbed. I feel like her response was pretty understandable given the circumstances. Her options were either 1. Let them get away with their plan to dub her without her consent and let them tell everyone that she was dubbed, probably ruining her career in the process 2. Let herself be dubbed, but do what she did and demand that it be a secret she was dubbed, in hopes of not having her career be ruined (and unfortunately in that case, logically she would've had to keep up the ruse by keeping Kathy as her voice, or else her career would absolutely be ruined as we see in the end of the movie) 3. Demand that the dubbing be removed and her natural voice be used (this probably would've been the best moral choice as the only people it would really hurt was herself maybe if people really didn't like her voice, and the film studio because of sales, which is honestly fine because they really screwed her over) or 4. Sue them, which probably would've ended up in the movie not being released and the studio losing a lot of money now granted, 3 and 4 hurts a lot of people vs just hurting one, but my point is, Lina's options here were very limited. She didn't do this to herself, she didn't wanted to be dubbed. I feel like she was acting in self preservation, which is natural. Granted, she fucked herself over when she decided to go out and give a speech. She rolled a 2 on intelligence in that moment.

Yeah, Lina's outrage over what the studio was planning was reasonable. The only thing she really did wrong was attempting to force Kathy into a shackling contract where she wouldn't be credited or be able to work on her own career. It's all sad and pointless when you realize that dubbing in films remained really common for decades, and plenty of actors weren't shamed for being dubbed. For example, Todd Armstron in Jason and the Argonauts, Ursula Andress in Dr. No and Gert Frobe in Goldfinger were dubbed, but people don't look down on them for that today. (But everything was all different in the 20s when sound was being introduced)

@quillmaurer6563

Really have to have some sympathy for her - she was going to be screwed no matter what, wasn't really a good solution. But she could have been less of a jerk - that's what made her the villain. Arguably it wasn't her sort of reasonable reaction to this threat to her career (though she certainly could have handled it better) that made her the villain, but just that she was such a jerk the whole time regardless.

Sound and picture on films now are still separate elements that have to sync up. Today, the 1st AD would say, "Roll sound!" Then the sound guy would say, "Speed!" when he was ready, then the (digital) clap board comes in and the director says, "Action!" Afterwards, the sound guy picks up the ambient sound of the stage or room to use in editing, so everyone on set must be dead silent to record a minute of "room tone." Gosh, I love film-making. And I love this movie!

The mike can pick up her heart beat but it can't pick up her chipmunk voice?

It's so close to her beating heart, that is why. It drowns out the voice.

No, that was the studio head.
Better stick with "Imperious Princess of the Night". Those "I love you's" could prove to be fatal.

At the very least, Betty Boop sounds less ridiculous in execution than Lina’s squeaky voice

I love this movie. To me, it’s my number 1 pick of best musical ever made. I love Gene Kelly and I do love Donald O’Connor too. And one more thing; 46 people disliked this movie. It must be like when Lina says “I canet steend him.” ROFL! 🤣🤣🤣
LOL! That's most funniest scene ever!!! LOL!!!
Jean Hagen was freakin' brilliant.
Geez, with that stress building up over the decades while trying to make movies, Hollywood's overdose problems make a lot more sense.

It's crazy how Singin' in the Rain didn't get more nominations for Best Picture. Best Director, etc. including a win for Jean.

I was interviewed for a news segment four years ago, and it involved one of those little mikes on a wire connected to a battery pack. The wire was threaded through my shirt sleeve to my collar, and I made a crack about feeling like Lina LaMont. Fortunately, the news crew cracked up-I had been afraid that they wouldn’t get the reference!
" i cant make love to a bush!" I love that line lol

If you look at the sound man as he “says” that line, you can tell when he shakes his head that his mouth isn’t moving and the actual line itself was dubbed in later. That only adds to the humor.
Favorite scene of my life

Jean Hagen,amazing!
This is one of the funniest scenes in any movie.
Me encantó esta película la vi y la sigo viendo ❤
Just to think how much of an easier time us filmmakers have today compared to back then.
I watched this a ton when I was quite little, and for a long time, I thought that "Rollum" was a word...
The part at 2:15 is my favorite! I LOVE how the mic, in her dress, picks up her heartbeat! If I were the director, I would have asked to save a few recordings of that take! ;;wink wink;;
it's really not easy to play someone who dumb or something. She actually deserves award for this.
"Pierre you shouldn't have" I read while looking at this 1929 silent film poster of Phyllis Havers who looks oddly similar to Lina....
the funniest scene EVER:D i LOVE it:)
A shimmering stahr in the cinematic fir man a mint
The Mr. Simpson pulling out wire with mic it made me laugh because director suffered a lot.
“Sure. Any way it’s comfortable. But INNNNTTO THE BUSSSSHH!!!”
One of the best scenes of the movie!
CHEE THIS IS DUMB I love that line!! ;)
You can see Jean Hagen as Doll in 'The Asphalt Jungle' and in TV's 'Make Room for Daddy' as Margaret Williams~1st season. As O'Connor said: They didn't cast a dumb blonde, they cast a great actress to play a dumb blond. She's great!
This is my favorite scene in this movie outside of the dance sequences. Jean Hagen was the ditsy dumb blond diva before the word was ever invented and she did it well. ty for the laughs folks....this is great classic filming.
