Singer Brian Johnson is Scottish and has never taken up residence in Australia. He replaced original singer Bon Scott who died in 1980. Bon told the band members that if anything happened to prevent home singing, Brian would be the perfect replacement.

A little bit of history regarding Australia' entertainment artists. Back in the 1950s when the only records available came into Australia from overseas artists, Australian artists had to work their buts off to sound exactly like the records to gain local support - I was one of them in the 60s. We were virtually ignored until The Seekers and Easybeats put the first holes in the wall when they hit the top in the UK and elsewhere. More often than not, the recording artists who visited Australia to perform didn't sound anything like their records, as in many cases the recordings had been over-dubbed to hide the faults/failures. To cut the story short, it was during the 70s when Olivia-Newton-John, The BeeGees,, Helen Reddy, Dave Allen and others took America by storm, that Australia suddenly lit up like a new sun and it's been shining brighter and brighter ever since. This all happened when the Aussie artists started touring the world and singing/performing live, sounding exactly as they did on their records. There is a book worth reading, although not for the faint hearted, titled 'Saved by the Light of the Buddha Within' - it tells a whole lot more about what I have mentioned.

Jimmy Barnes is Scottish born. His family immigrated to Australia when he was around 5 ( I think ). He was/is the front man for the band Cold Chisel. And also has an amazing solo career. Many people wrongly think that all he does is scream. In actual fact he has an amazing range and has a fantastically powerful voice.

This was to celebrate 30+ years of it being broadcast here by SBS TV, (since 1983 in fact) I believe the longest of any broadcaster outside Europe. We have had Aussies at Eurovision before (including Olivia who represented the UK), also consider this list of Aussies at Eurovision competing for other countries: Gina G (for UK - Ooh Aah Just a Little Bit). John Farnham is super huge in Australia and was also fairly well known in the UK and Europe in the 80s and 90s ...but not well known in the US, where this list was probably made. He tried cracking the US when he was younger and also when he was with Little River Band and he never really got a foothold. And by the time he had become hugely successful in Australia he had had enough of touring and trying to make it big overseas...he hated being away from his home and his family and was just happy to stay here. He filled arena after arena...there was no need to go overseas. He didn't care about the fame or the money.

John was asked to Join Queen when they lost Freddie, but he was a family man and didn't want to leave his wife and son's for too long. Although he toured Australia many times, and many famous people came to Australia to work with him. His song "Burn for you" is about missing his wife when he toured Australia, back in the day. He has such an extensive range and vocal ability he can sing anything and does sing as across so many genres of music it's amazing. You really should know about AC/DC, they’re Scottish immigrants to Australia. 😂 Three of the boys came to Australia as kids with their parents from Scotland. They picked up Bon Scott (original singer) in Perth, Western Australia and became AC/DC. Bon later died from choking on his vomit after a big night. There’s a great movie about it.

His illness has rocked Australia, especially that he was diagnosed within days of his very long and close friend, Olivia Newton-John's death from cancer. John Farnham - Black dog (Led Zeppelin cover) - Black Dog was John's sound check and warm up song 3. John Farnham & Jimmy Barnes - 'When Something Is Wrong With My Baby Hey Hey It's Saturday'. Jimmy Barnes, Scottish born Australian singer, was the lead singer of Cold Chisel and the song features Jimmy Barnes' brother-in-law, Diesel, on guitar. Hahaha ... I only know (some of) these names because I am an Aussie so I see news about them but many of these I wouldn't ever come across in my "old school" peregrinations, so don't feel embarrassed ... Keith Urban is married to another famous Aussie, Nicole Kidman. Have you watched the "Still call Australia Home" Qantas ad yet? It has Hugh Jackman and Kylie Minogue for starters. The Vance Joy one is a bit of a misdirect, because it's a Paul Simon song ... the break out song was "Riptide" I think, which you may have heard. Not having John Farnham is not surprising, as John chose to stay mostly in Australia once he had a family and horses. Surprised INXS weren't mentioned though. Keep 'em coming!

Jimmy Barnes, the front man from Cold Chisel, is from Glasgow, Scotland. You should check out ACDC's 'Long Way to the Top' where they include an element of their Scottish origins and then 'Live in the River Plate Argentina 2009'. That was a big one!

These scat are British is a stretch (Bee Gees excluded) they may have been born in the IK about grew up Australian and their musical careers started there. The Members of AC DC met in an immigration camp in the 60’s and their entomology is linked with The Easy Beats (the older Young brother being in that band). If these bands are from the UK the “English” cricket team is in big trouble…

If you like the DMAs, surely you have seen their stripped back version of "Believe" by Cher on Like A Version. Its actually one of my favourite performances of anything ever. Like a Version is a segment on Australia's youth radio network Triple J. The premise is an artist comes in to the studio and performs 2 songs, one of their own and a cover and the covers are VERY diverse in both in song and genre. Some standout performances include: Matt Corby singing his own song "Brother" he covers The Black Keys "Lonely Boy" for his cover. Denzel Curry covering Rage Against The Machine - Bulls on Parade. Chet Faker covering Sonia Dada - (Lover) You Don't Treat Me no Good The Wiggles (yes the kids band) covers Tame Impala - Elephant - this actually won Triple Js annual "Hottest 100" one of the worlds biggest public voted music polls. There are many more but i have given you a good start with these.

The song that you recognised during the Vance Joy segment is “You Can Call Me Al”. It was composed and sung by Paul Simon. It was very well known internationally and was on his mega album “Graceland”. He collaborated with several musicians from South Africa on it. “Homeless” was another hit from that album and I think you’d like it. You can hear that great African energy even on this cover by Vance Joy. Before that, Paul Simon was one half of “Simon and Garfunkel”. Their most famous song was “The Sound Of Silence”. You’d recognise it if you heard it.
