    A lot of singers don't "get it" Christina Aguilera was not a real singer until she "got it" and started exploring older music that came before her. Now I trust her to do her own thing. I think she "gets it" Celine Dion is very talented as far as her voice goes but I've rarely found her all that impressive in using what she has. However, seeing her do River Deep, Mountain High on Letterman was an eye opener. A great performance, in my book.

    One young lady who, to me will go down as the best female singer of her generations is Angelina Jordan. She won Norway's Got Talent at age 7 and America's Got Talent Champions at age 13. Today she is 16. She covers Etta James, Whitney Houston, Queen, Adele, Screamin Jay Hawkins and many more singers especially blues, jazz and R & B. She also has original music. I haven't seen you cover her. I know there are KZread vids of her at age 9 singing "I Put a Spell On You" in the style of Screamin Jay Hawkings. Also at a little older age "I'd Rather Go Blind" by Etta James, Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing", Adele's "Easy On Me", Queen's "Bohemian Rapsody" and her own "Million Miles" and "7th Heaven". Her catalog on KZread is very deep.

    As you mentioned, artists back in the day had to have quality voices, there wasn't anything to hide behind. For the most part in every performance they were regulated to standing in one spot or sitting on a stool. Their voice and passion while singing had to shine, mesmerize and hold an audience. If it didn't, they didn't get a career or it ended.

    Although I'm not the biggest fan of her vocals or tunes, she is a decent performer. I think what is important do they describe themselves as a vocalist or a performer who sings? That way nobody feels cheated. For instance, Alice Cooper is a great songwriter and performer, but he doesn't have the greatest range. However, listen to his emotions on something like How are you gonna see me now? and there is emotional depth necessary for a great singer. Here's what I'll say....every decade had singers who weren't really good singers but brought something else that was appealing and became succesful. So I can't really go with the "back then it took talent." We tend to look at the past with rose tinted lenses. The 90s had Mariah, Celine and Whitney but that's the same decade the spice girls became the best selling girl group. I can give you successful acts from every decade who became huge with little to no singing or even dancing talent. And I agree with him. You have to listen to Maroon 5's first album to see more of his ability. "Moves like Jagger" is all about production and catchiness and it hides it. Come to think of it, Mick Jagger could never really sing either! lol His dancing always was cringy to me. But again, he had another quality. There are successful acts of every era you can call out for mediocre talent singing or performing. Also, sounding distinctive is far more valuable than perfection. That's something that pushed Adam Levine too. His voice sounds like nobody else. Britney's real voice wasn't as distinctive as the voive they made her use. The one we hear, we immediately recognize and that's often more of a priority.

    I would not say he can't sing! Yes he can! You must have never heard of Angie or wild horses and some other good stuff. I love mick the stones are my favorite band even if their not the best of singers. Luckily I have seen them live when mick was not drunk or high. And he sings good enough. And he's multi-talented plays many different instruments. There's some people who can sing and cannot dance lol anyway Mick Jagger is by far talentless.

    Autotune gets a bad rap. Cher and Kylie Minogue can both sing beautifully live and are incredible performers. However, Cher’s “Believe” and Kylie’s “Padam Padam” are so catchy in the recordings of these songs that they wouldn’t have the same fabulous effects without autotune, which is used in both. So, autotune is not always a negative thing.

  • @captainbryce1

    @captainbryce1

    Autotune has it's place in music. It can be used as an effect to emphasize certain parts. However, it is most often abused in pop music and used as "pitch correction" which is not how Cher used it. Cher can actually sing without autotune. So can T-Pain believe it or not. When Cher used it in Believe, it was intended as a sound effect, not as pitch correction. Now, most singers use it to cover up the flaws in their vocals.

    Enjoy your channel. I am a rock vocalist who considers myself a dancer first. Here is how you can easily tell if there is autotune or not: the vocals sound metallic at the point of the change. I agree with Madonna. I would add Con-ye and Grand Funk Railroad which is basically monotone. American Idol sorry to tell you autotunes. But your wife is spot on. Ann Wilson would not have been able to get on or Mama Cass or Aretha back in the day. Taylor Swift notoriously cannot sing. There is a famous story about that.

When AI hit big, that is when you would see a lot of copycat shows that basically manufactured a lot of their contestants. It was basically having to do with what the producers felt the audience would favor; exactly what your lovely wife would say. Not a huge fan, but the woman could SING. Madonna is the female version of a “crooner,” and i never cared for the sound of her voice. As an old fart who grew up on the radio, Top 40, and classic rock, i haven’t heard of most singers in the age of autotune, which is gross. Just an opinion. But whoever it is from whatever era, they get as many takes in the studio as are necessary to really nail it, and they don’t get to do that in a live performance.

All of them both sang (Fee and Alice still do in their 70s) and danced (Fee has more costume changes than Diana Ross). They were and are all considered pop as well as rock! The band I love (the Who) saw Roger twirling that mike, Pete leaping in the air and Moon the Loon being well, Moonie. Roger and Pete have both strong (Roger) and sweet (Pete) voices in their 70s. Saw them in 2019 and they still can wail.
