That year in 1998 India won 5 multinational tournaments. A landmark year. And 3 finals were nailbiting ones. Agaist Pak,Aus and Sri.

1998 was Golden Year for Sachin Tendulkar as well as team INDIA. India had won Sharjah cup both in April and October. July Agust Singer Akai Nidahas trophy, Test series at home against Aus and what not.

Indian cricket was so much dependant on Sachin Tendulkar those days fitness standard so poor as is evident by poor fielding and poor running between the wickets and we used to be always thrashed badly in sena countries it was a very weak team all this changed after saurav ganguly became the captain and it was carried forward by dhoni Ganguly does not get the credit and respect he deserves for changing Indian cricket

No, they played that long in fear of down order who cannot build partnerships. Very rare Ajay Jadeja will fire. For India, only with Entry of sehwag as opener, Strike rates improved.

​@@krishnasai7891no, with Sachin and Ganguly we were good at opening but there were no proper middle order. Team approach changed when Viru, Yuvi, Zaheer, harbhajan and kaif came in.

Not necessarily, in the ODIs those days strategy was different, the acceleration overs were the first 15 and the last 10 (give or take a little). Slowing down a bit in the middle overs wasn’t such a huge deal. Playing long was almost at par with playing fast. Tendulkar esp was in great form this year and had lost his wicket in the some of the previous games by playing a shot too many. If he had slowed down I would give some credit to the Lankan spinners for that.Also on such a wicket 280-300 was a good score those days. Kudos to De Silva (and Indian bowlers) for getting it that close. The match fixing story could be a reason too but it’s can’t really be confirmed. BTW, I’ve seen players slow down in the 90s even now (but maybe not as much).
