Singer 99 sewing machine from 1951

Made in 1951, this Singer 99 was a re-issue for Singer's 100th anniversary (1851 - 1951). This model originally appeared in 1931. It is the 3/4 sized version of the Singer 66. It was the first attempt at being "portable" or "lightweight" ... it is a straight-stitch with no zig-zag option, no reverse-stitch and unmarked stitch length or thread tensioner knobs. This machine uses a simple drop-in bobbin (class 66 metal) and it produces the more popular "lock-stitch" (vs a chain-stitch machine)

I love my Great Britian Manufactured Model 99. Perfect for everyday sewing and patchwork. My Mom had the same model only it was a knee (electric ) treadle instead of a foot pedal. My Grandmother purchased it for her in the 50's for her growing family.

Thank you. I used a similar version machine when I was 9. That was my mom's machine and I used it to sew El Santo masks. El Santo was a famous Mexican professional wrestler who was idolized by youth back in the early 60s in Ecuador. Because I did not have material available, I used my own bed sheet. When mom found out, I had to get ready for a scolding and a spanking. The masks came out just fine; that was creative and daring of me at that age.

I have the same one. My old girl is from 1928, she's in a bentwood case and has the knee lever control. Still sews beautifully as the day she left the Elizabethport, N.J. factory. Serial number starts with AC-XXXXXX.

I have a machine, the same size, same decals, but the front Singer plate below the thumb screw is different. The serial number on the charts says it is a 128 but it looks more like this machine. So I am a litttle confused at to which model I actually have. I just got this machine recently.

Sally Gerschefske I inherited a sewing machine from my mother in law which is a hand crank 128k but it also looks like this machine. The tension unit looks exactly the same, the stitch length adjuster looks the same, only the bobbin is different being one of the long bobbins. I checked the serial no and it was built in 1958 in Great Britain.

My aunt has a singer 66-16 with front in bobbin. What size and type needle can She use for it? I believe it’s a 1950’s model year.

Question: How do you change the light bulb? I have looked everywhere to find it, but not even the manuals that I found even mentioned the lamp. Any help is welcome.

the glass lens is a twistoff type where you push the lens inwards and rotate a quarter turn to the left and then it pops out. you will most likely cut your fingers so i would advise using a rubber bottle opener or i used an Ov-Glove with the grips to grip the glass lens. its a silly design because yiu have to be strong to push in on the spring loaded tabs but it can be done but i will say its a pain in the butt! hope that helps and good luck and try not to get hurt doing it.

Thanks! Is there anything specific about the bulb or is it like a regular bulb where you just twist it?

I am drawing a blank at the time and I don't have the sewing machine near me to look at it. I seem to remember it's just a twist in bulb but I do recall trying to put in a modern-day LED version and I forget why it wouldn't work. I know I wound up buying the original type of bulb which burns very hot so you have to be careful with the outer shell because it does get quite hot. Hope that helps you

I too have a 99-. Mine has the lamp that sits closer to the front and I can not for the life of me figure out how to open it up to get to the bulb. No manual indicates this type of lamp. my serial number is AM526728, April 18 1955. If you find out how to open the lamp, let me know.

Hi there! Very nice tutorial but, where is the reverse stitch?

  • @eternaloptimist2840

On this model there is no reverse, you have to turn the workpiece. There were a couple of later versions of the 99 that had stitch length levers instead of a knob, and on those you just lift the lever.

1bjwlsn google this “singer machine dates” and look for a page for singer serial numbers. You’re looking for a site called ismacs. Go there. Find the letter/s at the front of your serial number, on the front or underneath in later singers. Look up those letters in the list, find the number range and you will see the date and the type of machine and how many were commissioned in that batch. Voila

And some just have a little badge near the singer roundel. After a while you get to recognise what they are: Singer15 always have the tension thingy on the left end plate. So do they 115s but they’re rare. 66, 201, 99 it’s on the front. Look for differences in the shapes of the silver bobbin plates and where they are, relative positions of knobs for sts length, or later on sliders. That sort of thing
