Singer 29 Shoe Patcher Sewing Machine, How To Thread and Load the Bobbin. The 29K 72 on Servo Motor.
This is a Singer 29 sewing machine, the Singer 29K 72 shoe patcher operating on a servo motor. I show the various features of this machine and show how adjustments affect it's behavior. I show how to load the bobbin with thread, load the bobbin into the case, load the case into the machine. I show how to thread the machine too. I operate this machine on a servo motor with a 45mm pulley with good results.

Thank you for checking out my video. Be sure to check in the description for more great information like links for the manual, tools and equipment I use too. You can also help me out by clicking 👍 under the video.
You Sir saved me. Like really saved me... I had some issues with my 100yo Singer 29k31 and after watching your video and carefully inspecting what i have wrong on mine - finally, after 8mths of being useless - SHE SEWS LIKE A CHAMP! You absolutely deserve a medal!
You lift the presser foot when darning and that releases the "normal" tensioner, that's why you need to use the one on the side of the head. That one is also commonly used for winding the bobbin, at least if you have the hand wheel and bobbin winder mounted on the front of the machine.

Thank you It helps to know, I'm looking to get one of these in the future.
I have a 1913 29-4. These are great machines. I will never sell this machine. I bought it 8 yrs ago from someone in ohio and it didnt have the treading rod to thread it. No shuttle, no spool pin. Had not been oiled in decades. I bought it for $300 + shipping. I had to sink more into it to get it like It was originally. Had to have one part custom made. I also bought a treadle for the machine. I was told its rare to get a 29 treadle by itself. It two was rusted. I had to have it sand blasted. Then took it to a paint and body shop that restored the paint to original singer paint epoxy. Everything has sewing machine oil and the inside has been degreesed and oiled. It a beautiful machine now. I run it with 2 rubber belt to give it strength to punch through leather. I will put this 29 against any commercial machine out there. Thanks for the video.

What Kind of motor did you buy for it?
The holes in the lubrication cup are for holding a felt pad in the cup. The thread rubs across the pad to get the lubrication. My 29K 73 still has the piece of felt sewn into the cup.
This has got to be one of the best threading of a machine I've ever watched, thank you so much.

Thank you for the high-quality video on this machine. I have a 29k71 and have really enjoyed your explanations. thank you again.
I was on the fence about this machine, watching all other videos and the general info everyone gives. Your video was all inclusive and very well done thank you sir, I'll be buying that machine this weekend!
Thank you for this very informative video! I have had a 29-4 treadle model for 20 plus years and learned a lot from this video. I also just acquired a 29k-60 in it's original treadle configuration. These are great old machines. Iv'e used them for sewing patches on leather and installing zippers on jackets etc. These machines really out perform a normal household machine for doing heavier work.
I love the resolution of this video and that you spent the time to have in focus the area you were discussing.Thank you mate, much appreciated.

Thanks very much for this, you just saved me a whole bunch of time trying to work out why my machine was walking backwards...it wasn't I just had a weird set of instructions that told me it went the wrong way. I appreciate all the little tension setting stuff too. Cheers and thanks for sharing
I have a 29K60. It has a few issues but you have helped me understand it better. Thanks
I'm getting one today. I have 5 other heavy machines but I think this will be a lot of fun to get going again, and this video will be a good reference. Thanks.
I owe you a serious thank you for this video. I purchased an Axis 2792B in Oct 2021 (my first sewing machine after years of hand sewing only) and I have not been able to figure it out since the manufacturers' videos are incomprehensible to me (not to mention having no audio or on-screen instructions lol). Your instructions are detailed and clear, and I now hove the confidence to have a go at this beast! Thanks so much:)
This is a super interesting sewing machine Alexander. Thank you for preserving, and improving these old machines.

Great to see a new video from you.
This was the best and most informative tutorial ever. Very well explained. Thank you as i just bought one and am waiting for the mail to receive some bobbins
I have a 29K66, enjoy sewing an patching on this machine. Relocated hand wheel to front an replaced worn gears. Took a while to adjust but am enjoying using my machine for shoe, boot, an sewing patches on coats an vests. Mine was made in England in 1940.
Ingenious and fascinating. I love mechanical devices, and this machine was obviously a game-changer in the shoe industry.

Thank you Alexander , I have a 29K58 which I love for my Marine Canvas Business. The find tuning is what I need to see !
Excellent informative video. Much of this also applies to the singer 29-4. Thank You.
dope! I have a axis shoe patcher thats modeled after this and all of the parts are similar! this video saved me soo much hassle thanks
Very clearly presented ! I'm CONSTANTLY having to adjust the tensions on my 331K4 which I use for furniture weight leather which I use to make purses, wallets and bags and I'm either really happy with it or driven bonkers when the 40 thread I use snaps or messes up in some way !
Thank you for making this
Indeed! Great value! Thank you!
This totally fixed my problem ❤ thank you so much
Thank you!!! Learned a lot!! Excellent as always!! We have a 1911 29K2 that we use often and wouldn't be without.

Probably the best 29k I’ve ever seen. From the paint to the badge it’s seriously beautiful. I just got a Chinese patcher machine and had hell for 2 days trying to get it to stitch. I’m very happy w it but damn brother I dream of this machine. Thanks for posting. Hope to get one one day.
Finally a video on KZread that explains the model numbers! Thank you!!!! Can you do more videos on this machine? Service and oiling maybe?! Thanks in advance! Awesome video!

I find that these colored lights, accent the different forms and curves of the machines which has been a challenge to capture, especially on black matte finishes like this one. I am glad you like it. Thanks for saying so.
When the hand crank handle is in the front the tension plates in the front are used for winding bobbins. The front tensioner is also used when the oil cup needs to be bypassed. The cup lubricates the thread for sewing leather. The front tensioner is used to sew cloth. In that case you would not want to use thread soaked in oil. Without the front tensioner option you would have to clean out the oil cup to sew cloth. david
Thank you for sharing this wonderful video Very interesting. It's a Rollys Royce
Thank you for explaining. Pickup a 29k70 to sew patches....:)

Cut my teeth on one of those classics, had a treadle and motor drive. It's my next machine to purchase. Thank you

Muy buen video
I have a 1936 29k71. It is the first machine that I named. I was made the year my mom was born, Cona Jean. I have had it for about 8 months and love it. I had to do some minor adjustments and it works great. What you call the darning discs is what I learned to use when I wind a bobbin. The one thing I am not aware of is the thread hole in the top of the bobbin pin I have not known about it. I will have to look at mine, but it has seen well without it. Great videos!
Thank you. Very informative!!! Now to try it on my one machine ... ;-)
Good day
Thanks for info, I have 3 singer 15-91s and love them but came across a 29 in good condition Ive never used it but think its just a cool old machine. Would probably sell it for right price but shipping would be painfull. This thing is a ship anchor !!! I love these old machines and tractors too. Lol M L Rogers Pasadena,TX
Great voice. If you did books on tape, I'd listen.
I have the same 29K72 on it’s original base. What a great machine. I’m clueless on the darning discs...
@AlexanderDyer
I have learned that since darning is done with the foot lifted the darning disks are independent from tension release.
I’m second on one of these machines this week. Hopefully the other buyer backs out.
Awesome. I have something similar I picked up a while back (Adler), and after watching this video I went to see how mine measured up and discovered four things that weren't working right. Now I know what to do. No wonder the thing sewed like crap!

I think the two plates are brackets that guide the main thread towards the bobbin on the rotary wheel. The bobbin thread is wound directly from the roll.
Sr. Alexander excelente video .
Nuevamente mil gracias.
Thanks for a realy good intro of how to use tis maschine. I have a problem: the upper thread keeps breaking. Whats the solution? Frank
I have a 29k58 patcher and your video is the best I’ve seen explaining the adjustment on the pressure foot and the thread take up leaver. The bit you adjusted at the end of the take up assembly is missing on my 29k58 and it is causing all sorts of issues. I’m trying to source a replacement. Many thanks again for your excellent video. If you get chance to reply I’d love to know what size needle and thread you used in this video.
Excellent Video, By chance do you know what the part is called for the lower tension that has the bold that was at one time adjusted at factory?
I own a 29k71 of around the same vintage as yours (Hammertone paint). SN tells me its from 1958. The Darning disks can be used to wind the bobbins if you have the wheel in the front (As Mine does). The front disks are used as they are adjusted for tension independently from the top disks. These machines are popular with cobblers and shoe repair shops. My grandfather had a shop from 1960ish to 1998ish and saved a few machines when he closed down. My dad and i both inherited a machine. i still have it on the original treadle stand but it was modified with an electric motor and clutch (Done crudely in the 70's). Great machines! Hard to find parts for them and needles are getting hard to find.

Thanks for that. While some parts may be a challenge, needles are no problem, I go to eBay and search 29x3 for cloth and 29x4 for leather

Would like to see more on your addition of a servo motor. I have a 29-3 and want to put on a servo motor. Photos or video would be great. I can machine or fab any mount but want to know about speed gearing etc.
@AlexanderDyer
It bolts to the bottom of the table with 3 bolts. Bolts and mounting bracket are part of the package you get when you purchase a servo. Speed is variable, that is part of what makes the servo so great. Comes with a pulley so not much to figure out but different size pulley can be placed on the motor if desired. I have a 29k72 that i recently got from a retired shoe repair shop. I am finding that the presser foot does not seem to lift when stitching, it will lift with the lever to insert or remove a piece of work however as it stitches it just sort of shuffles forward without lifting the foot even when i put the adjuster to “h”. Any input on what i might look to fix would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks for the lovely video:)
Question: I see that You take the tread off the top of the spool, but I’ve seen the thread peeled off the side of the spool. Seems like one methods would create additional twist in the thread. Does it matter which way you unspool ?
Thank you! This video was great. I have an Adler 30-1 which is very similar. I was having a few issues. Your video was helpful. I only have one issue and that's when I turn the head to go 180°, the needle touches the foot which results in broken thread. Can you offer any solution?
I am looking for the main tension screw for my Power Patcher machine. The screw that I have is too short. Where can I find parts for patcher machine. Thanks
