Singer 127 Disassembly for Min. Adjustment, Max. Cleaning: Sunday Morning Quickies, Ep60 Oct 16 2022
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
The question: How far can I go in disassembly of my filthy Singer 27/127 for cleaning, and not have too many hard adjustments to make when I put it back together? This week, I'll answer that question and more. A true hands on, real time disassembly of a Singer 127, showing what to touch and what not to touch, so the reassembled machine will only require 3 easy to make adjustments.

Hi Bob! I know this is an older video. I’m watching, so you may already have this info… at 22:20 in the video you mention the lightbulb is a candelabra style and you haven’t seen it in LED. I did find this: Chinnor Sewing Machine Light Bulb BA15D LED Bulb AC110-130V 400lm 40W Halogen Equivalent Push-in LED Light Bulb Double Contact Bayonet Base for Kenmore | Singer 15-66, 99, 201, 221, 222, 401 Sewing Machine (2-Pack). It’s working nicely in my machine & has a nice bright white light. Thanks for all the info you share, I spent most of the day binge watching your channel yesterday.

Thanks Nola!
Great video Bob thanks! I learned that everything I wasn’t supposed to do on my 128 I did! Good luck to me 😂 👍🏻
When my 99's light failed, I found the little spring had broken, so I just turned it to be a closed circuit position forever. I have all my sewing machines on a switch and turn it off when I'm not sewing, anyway.
with the adjusters manual and your videos i feel a lot more confident to tackle my 27s, thank you so very much for all of your videos whether they are for the 27 or any other machine. i look forward to each and every one so keep them coming
How about a re-assembly video of that same machine?
Appreciate the answer to my question on the washer from the previous video! I think that I found the washer on the floor when I was cleaning yesterday. I think it must have been ejected when I was disassembling the machine because I didn't know any better at the time. Thanks as always!
Thanks Bob, great video! Really appreciate the time you take explaining how to do things without a lot of special equipment.
Thank you so much for answering my question! I hope you’ll have time to make all the loud Hawaiian shirts your heart desires someday. I hear ya’ about the masks though. I made plenty of them myself early in the pandemic for friends and family who don’t sew. It’s a great thing to help folks with old sewing machines and spread the love! 💗

Oh boy I needed this. I have a Singer 27 that is really broken down. I'm going to repaint it and reassemble...on second thought, I may have to check with Bob on the possibility of having him reassemble.
Fantastic! I have a 27 that I have wanted to dive into :)

They are pretty simple, just make sure you have the adjusters manual.
My 127 thanks you for protecting it from me! 😁🍻
Hi Bob did you ever make a video about the machine fixture /holder that you use on your bench. I'm really interested in how you made it. Thanks
1. I don't know what I'd do without you! Thank you. 2. And of course now I am going to ask a favor: Would you please tell me where you get your screwdrivers? The ones I have all have slanted tips.

Oh Lord. I know better than to even TRY doing this! Even though the machine was given to me, I don't want to disassemble it & not be able to get it back together properly. Maybe some day, definitely not today or the near future. She works & is a quiet treadle & I LOVE HER...

@@BobFowlerWorkshop thank you. I have corrected the bobbin tension & cleaned the hand wheel as the needle was still moving when I tried to wind the bobbin. It works as it should now. Ecstatic! Wonderful for a machine made in 1920. ❤️ All that to say, THANK YOU! I learn so much from you.

Hi, I have a slide plate that stuck and I can't get it moving. 😒 Any ideas, it's a 127. Good video by the way 👍
This has been a great video, in it you mentioned tap sizes, do you have a listing?
Agreed. Sometime old techie always got to spoil themselves for lovely tools.

To say I spoil myself (tool wise) is somewhat of an understatement!
Bob, agreed. My wife keeps an eye on many of my activities & since I work on automobiles, specializing in Diesel & now electric vehicles, she would be floored if she really knew how much $$$ I have invested in my tools.

I've been tearing down a gorgeous,,,but very dirty,,,,,, 1906 model 15K with a hand crank. It has a very unusual upper tension assembly where the actuating rod is actually a large bracket that cradles the tension discs. Almost like a little soup ladle. The bobbin winder assembly is also very unique and attaches to the machine head with a single horizontal screw.....I wonder if you have any info on these? Thanks for your videos !!!!
Spring for the light - find a way to make it permanently ON and fit an LED bulb [1] for me this is a "safety point" to remind me that the foot controller is still plugged in, a friend of mine left her machine on and smoked an internal capacitor, very stinky. [1] Most UK machines are small BAYONET type. Some of the LED bulbs I get from China will not allow the bayonet pins to turn into the slot; I have found that with a file / Dremel just ease the Backlight plastic opening for the light socket at about a 45 degree chamfer will allow the bulb to go in a bit further and turn. I know it feels like your doing damage but it is only a small modification.

The LED lamps sold at Hobby Lobby (Singer branded) don't fit the sockets well at all. The sockets almost ALWAYS need a little massaging for the bulb to fit.
Thank you for posting this (and so many other!) videos as I work in a new-to-me 128. Do you have any tips for stuck screws/bolts? The pivot bolt for the bell crank is completely frozen...and the shuttle is filthy. I can't clean it until I get the part out, but the bolt won't budge. I don't want to damage anything...and yet, it looks like it should be so easy.

I have to confess, sometimes, I resort to my 18 volt Milwaukee impact driver to remove that big pivot bolt. Just use the largest bit you have that will fit.
Thank you. Also thank you for your military service.

Excellent video Bob! Will be dismantleing my 127 here shortly and this is exactly what I needed to see! Quick question, Do you have a source on refinishing the what appears to be silver plates and the round handle? I think I read somewhere that it may be silver plated? Trying to figure out how to duplicte the round handle finish is gonna be a pain. Thanks Lee

The balance wheels were either bare metal (polished), painted, or nickel plated. I have had many machines where the plating was failing on the balance wheel to the point where it was coming off in chunks. As the Balance wheel is meant to be smooth surfaced as it is often handled while in motion, I tend to strip off failing nickel plating with a wire wheel and just polish the steel. I can say from personal experience that a chunk of plating can and will rip your skin, and will REALLY hurt! For a variety of reasons, I'm not set up, nor do I want to be set up, for electroplating, so I opt to just polish the freshly de-plated surfaces and call it a day.

@@BobFowlerWorkshop Thanks Bob, I may just have to go the route you have suggested and then just clear coat the polished metal. Much appreciated from one vet (Air Force) to another!
Howdy, was searching for your tutorial of how to put the bobbin winder back on with the wire springs etc. Can you show me the video you did?

Hi Bob! A couple nosy questions and a request. What IS your day job, and because I want you to do more videos, when do you think you will retire? Do you think you could do similar breakdown w minimal adjustments maximum cleaning videos for a 201, 15, 66?😊
@BobFowlerWorkshop
Жыл бұрын
Second question first. Sure, I'll be happy to do breakdown videos as time permits. As for your first question... I work for a company that provides, among other things, managed services for video teleconferencing to businesses. We're a 24/7/365 operation with employees providing support services all over the world. My job, prior to the pandemic, was as a video conferencing engineer - think telephone operator, but for multi-point video calls. We have a team of coordinators who schedule and then the engineers build and run calls on various video platforms from Poly, Cisco, Pexip, etc. We also provide "white glove" service to customers wherein we stay in the call for the duration and provide various levels of assistance. Since the pandemic, we have seen a move away from h.323 video calls on customer owned infrastructure to cloud based solutions such as Zoom and Webex, which are, by their very nature, more of a self service platform. We do provide maintenance and monitoring of their conference room and huddle space systems, which is now where 90% of my work has moved. We still provide a substantial amount of white glove service - especially for large, corporate events such as end of year meetings and sales conferences. If I even mention that I'm exhausted because I was working a large live assist, that's what I was doing.

@@BobFowlerWorkshop WOW! So, when companies do those big huge massive rollouts, that's you! Apple and Tesla events! Sounds interesting, but exhausting, like herding cats🐈⬛! Well, I'm sure you know we can't wait for you to 'retire' so you can spend all you time teaching us to repair our Beauties! I see a big huge massive event with all of us sometime in your future! We'll all wear Hawaiian shirts!
Bob, I have my 66 mostly apart and the parts cleaned (there are a few screws that don't want to let go). My question is, do I put grease or oil on things like the bearing on the stitch length arm, the forks, the hook shaft, etc. when I go to put them back together? I'm sure you must say in some of your videos but I haven't come across it yet.
@BobFowlerWorkshop

Just a drop of oil Molly. I usually reassemble most parts dry and oil after it's all back together, but things like the bearing on the fork arm get it prior to going back in.

@@BobFowlerWorkshop Thanks Bob! Another question: I don't have a buffer wheel but I discovered that a magic eraser cleans the yellow/brown film off parts pretty effortlessly. Do you know of any reason I shouldn't use those? Tell me quick before I ruin my machine! 😅
Do you have a manual for singer fiddle base VS2?
@BobFowlerWorkshop
Жыл бұрын
No, unfortunately, that I don't have. As for servicing a VS2, it's very much like the later vibrating shuttle machines.
So I just got my 127 and I'm trying to work on it but I can't get the back strike plate off. Do you have recommendations for loosening it?
@BobFowlerWorkshop
Ай бұрын
If I have a particularly obnoxious one that doesn't want to move, I apply some kroil along the joint and let it sit. I'll slide open the free plate, then will use a heavy (1 inch diameter) hardwood dowel up against the edge of the stuck plate and hit the dowel with a mallet to drive the stuck plate out of the machine. The secret is to approach at as low and angle as you can, give healthy taps, but don't go crazy and wail on it. Let the kroil do its job. It will eventually come free.
Where can you buy the fat tire for a 99 bobbin winder?

Bobbin winder tires are available locally at places like Joanne's or online from most sewing supply companies such as Sewing Parts Online or even Amazon.
