For those who believe that only speaking English is prestigious, similar to many Americans who are monolingual, Jiayang shows true sophistication. It's important to recognize the value of being proficient in a second language, as it opens up a world of opportunities for growth and personal development. Despite being one of the youngest and least experienced individuals in the company, my proficiency in Mandarin earned me an assignment in China. This unique work experience allowed me to effectively collaborate the locals with a senior colleague from Singapore, who was also fluent in Mandarin, where we were there for a period of time. Even though I excelled in my Chinese O's, I felt like a primary school kid during my time at the China company. 😅 Some of the preschoolers there might have even been better than me! 😂 But I was still able to express myself and be understood, which was a great feeling. Don't underestimate the benefits of bilingual education and environments. Learning an additional language is always a valuable asset. 1 language X1 door of opportunities. Jiayang opened 7 doors By the way, it can be quite amusing if your parents speak Mandarin at home and you pretend not to understand it, like a gangtang/ potato or banana. There's no need to be ashamed of your mother tongue. I remember seeing friends who spoke dialect and Mandarin fluently at home, but then acted as if they only knew English in public with friends. Speaking your mother tongue or dialect is not something to be ashamed of or considered low class. Embrace our languages and unique cultural roots! 🙏🏻 P.s. a lot of the expats are spending $$$ on their kids to learn Chinese and they speak fluently and confidently, super proud that they can speak Mandarin. Funny to see Singaporeans feeling sia suay for speaking Mandarin or teaching their kids Mandarin.

He even used the story of 孟母三迁 to entertain our guests with the story of how our family kept moving houses to find good school 😆 he was very happy to hear that he left an impression on you and our family LOVED the poem! you got all the literal meaning right. but just wanna explain that 只羡鸳鸯不羡仙 is a chinese saying. firstly 鸳鸯is a pair of birds (鸳 is the male bird, 鸯 is the female bird) that are always together. so 鸳鸯 is often used to describe a couple. 只羡鸳鸯不羡仙 means they would choose to be like the mandarin ducks, loving each other and be with each other for eternity, and wouldn't exchange it for immortality.

for some reason countries that dont have culture or history seem slightly bland to me. Culture, roots,i feel like it gives a sense of identity. People say language is the door to culture,if you teach your mother tongue to child, they will read all the literature associated with your culture and associate with that culture. Not teaching language = child growing up without your culture.

Hey there! I noticed your comment on 'he doesn't even know.... is language or dialect' and wanted to provide some information. I mentioned that it depends on the context when it comes to language or dialect. When you asked about Cantonese as a spoken language, I cited Guangdong and Guangxi as examples where Cantonese is still spoken. And regarding whether Cantonese is an official language in Singapore, there are no sources to confirm that. I hope I was able to help clarify things for you. Feel free to consider yourself the winner of this discussion! 😄
