Singapore's West Side Story: Hidden Relics Of Jurong | On The Red Dot | Full Episode

Jurong has many unpopular labels. Some call it the wild, wild west of Singapore; others say it is Singapore’s boondocks, and many even imagine it as a badly polluted industrial wasteland!
Jurong’s designation as an industrial estate was born out of necessity to tackle unemployment issue faced by pre-independent Singapore. Residential areas subsequently sprung up within Jurong for workers who would otherwise have to endure long commutes to and from the workplace.
With the addition of recreational facilities that enticed people to live and work in Jurong, and the thoughtfully planned pockets of greenery that helped soften that unwelcoming industrial image, Jurong became an excursion-worthy destination of attractions!
So what’s wrong with Jurong? It was instrumental in Singapore’s economic progress and there are still plenty of wow sides buried under all that bad impression!

I feel that the gov should keep or build another ice rink for the hockey team. Not everything needs to be quantifiable. This is for Singapore and it builds people.

I know. Before this, I figured Singapore have multiple indoor ski and skate rinks because it's quite common in developed world. Didn't know Singapore only have one

Hi Joakim, thanks for this nostalgic video of Jurong. I was a very young kid when I use to visit my uncle’s socks factory at Taman Jurong area. There are 2 dragon kilns in Jurong / Jalan Bahar. One is the Guan Huat u visited. The other is Thow Kwang Pottery. As for bricks, there were 2 bricks factories : Jurong Brickworks & Nanyang Brickworks. These brickworks produces very good strong engineering bricks that gave a bright “cling” ring when u knock 2 bricks against each other.

I lived in Lakeside and I feel Jurong is quite convenient to stay. One stop to Jurong Point at Boon Lay and two stops to Jurong East shopping malls. The only bad thing is NTUC and SS is a bit far away. I usually go to the one at Yung Ching road

As a someone who used to live in the west, always heard of people calling Jurong ulu. But surprising I hardly hear people calling Simei and Pasir Ris ulu, even though they're as ulu as Jurong. People only be like 'oh its in the East', but then why for Jurong, no one ever says 'Oh...its in the West'. It probably takes longer to get from Bishan to Simei than Bishan to Jurong.

I think because Jurong is relatively big, and up until recently wasn't as built up as the east side. Ulu doesn't just mean far. It also means 'isolated' and 'barren' (as in, nothing much there).

🙏 Jurong in Singapore is an Industrial Estate made from many reclaimed land ... Remembered the last MRT station used to be the Boon Lay , later extended to Joon Koon or maybe to other connecting MRT stations in the future ... 🙏

Leong Mun Wai, has pointed out in an adjournment motion that this is the first time in HDB history that residents selected for SERS must top-up cash to get an equivalent replacement flat with a new 99-year lease. This was confirmed by Mr Leong during the deliberations of the Public Petitions Committee via questions to the Ministry for National Development (MND) for past examples of SES where the residents had needed to top-up cash for an equivalent flat with a new 99-year lease. The situation seen in AMK Ave 3 will likely get worse for many in the future as senior HDB owners see the value of their flats depreciate as the value of new flats gets more expensive.

Progress Singapore Party (PSP) Non-constituency Member of Parliament can only get better over time. In fact, we are already seeing a much-improved version of the Leong Mun Wai who first stepped into the arena. It frequently takes not only one Minister but a few to have a go at him. On top of that, the Speaker of Parliament interjects on behalf of the Ministers, never once on behalf of Leong Mun Wai. And while all this is happening, the People’s Action Party (PAP) Members of Parliament merely sit and watch. So it’s no surprise that on the rare occasion, they try to debate an opposition member, they find themselves out of touch and out of their league. Given all the debating that Leong Mun Wai has had to do, a few knocks here and there, an apology or two is fair game.

3:28 "Back in the 50s, Singapore faced huge unemployment." Well, 73 years later, Singapore's employment rate has not drastically improved and the situation has worsened due to the ruling political party's toxic preferences and policies which are unfavourable to Singaporeans.
