Singapore PM Lee Warns of U.S.-China Miscalculation Over Taiwan

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong says tensions over Taiwan risk leading to a miscalculation between the U.S. and China as both nations step up activity around the island. "I don't think it's going to war overnight, but it is in a situation where you can have a mishap or a miscalculation and be in a very delicate situation," Lee said Wednesday night in an interview with Bloomberg Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum event in Singapore.

Whether America can maintain its dominance depends on its ability to self-correct: Here in America, I don't see any politicians doing any soul searching on what's gone wrong with America? Totally agree with you. Unfortunately self-correction is lost in today's America and what is prevailed in America is no one agreeing with facts as simple as 1+1=2. A divided America with mentality of blaming everyone else (particularly China) for its problems will harm America domestically and internationally. In the past, American did no have credible competitors, so this self-destruction did not do much harm to America. But today China has resources, sizes, and capability to compete with America, the outcome could be totally different.

As a people, the US has developed the dependency on others for their living standards well above the rest of the world. American Exceptionalism ended when the US decided to de-couple gold and US Dollars. Since then, the US can print as much US Dollars as it pleases. And as a result, all Americans, not just the suckers in Wall Streets, learned the sweet deal of printing money and taking real wealth from other nations. As a people, the US has developed the dependency on others for their living standards well above the rest of the world. The outsourcing of the manufacturing jobs is just a symptom, not a root cause, of the end of American Exceptionalism.

Except that US is ultimately NOT reliant upon foreign trade, not as a matter of Exports trade-to-GDP percentage, which is only 11% for the US. The US buys a lot of junk that it is entirely capable of manufacturing for itself, but hasn't out of convenience. Much of the manufacturing capability in Asia (not just China) came from the US in the first place. On the other hand, a lot of manufacturing is re-shoring to the US or North America in general. Decoupling from China has already begun, and is likely to continue which is bad for China as the US is China's largest foreign consumer market. Lee is of course going to bias his views as to how things effect his own country, not necessarily what is in the best interests of other nations.

We need more leaders who speak common sense and exude confidence that comes from inner strength rather than inner insecurity. For a minute I wished I could be a citizen of Singapore. The man is so inspiring. I think people are way too hard on the interviewer. Remember, you would not get to hear PM Lee's, exuisitely articulate statements had it not been for the penetrating questions from the interviewer. PM Lee is a true global statesman like his father. Similar to many comments here, I long for this type of leadership in the US. What’s missing in the political establishment in the US is that there are no adults. There are so many internal problems, such as infrastructure, education, affordable health care, homelessness, drug addiction, etc. It seems that we are coming apart at the seams. Before the pandemic, some of these problems were manageable. But we utterly mismanaged the pandemic that led to more than 740k deaths. Our governance structure and ideology are called into question. We really need to self reflect and do some true introspection. An honest self assessment is necessary for our country to regain our balance.

I notice that the difference between Singapore leaders and many leaders of other democratic countries is that Singaporean leaders don't always make the populist decision. In fact, they seldom make the populist decision. They know that they will probably be elected again and also the majority of the citizens know that there is no viable alternative party at the moment that can match their track record of running the country for half a century. In contrast, political leaders in other countries get elected based on spewing popular rhetoric and making the decision that is short term popular rather than long term beneficial. Almost every decision Singapore government makes is towards long term benefit for a very small island nation. And to do this their leaders have to be very perceptive to what is going on outside their borders and geopolitical economic developments in other countries as well and also anticipate how possible permutations of such developments will affect the future of their own country. That is why PM Lee can comment so well on China, US, Taiwan etc.

Yeah , they do, Singapore is a one party state, which holds elections only sometimes, if they decide to let some candidates through, but mostly there is one nominated for election and no competition, and so ths is the new head of state. But yet, it IS an efficient state, like China, Hong Kong has a lot of problems, but none of them are Mainland China related.(The HK political system is introduced just before the brits left. Nobody really likes that, neither HK citizens nor Mainland china, but the lobby groups in HK are too strong, made in UK)

@@ericho9379 The Taiwan administration under Tsai Ing Wen is a different kettle of fish. We used to have good relations with Taiwan before she came along. Last year, at our moment of great need for surgical masks when the Covid outbreak first began, Taiwan pulled the rug out from under our feet by banning us from shipping our own masks made by our own 2 production lines in Taiwan back to SG. We had no choice but to dismantle those production lines and ship them back to SG immediately, which took more than 20 days, during which no masks could be made. Taiwan under Tsai showed herself to be not a friend in need. But that taught us a valuable lesson ie that the supply of certain essential goods must never be outsourced; and also who our true friends really are. Seems there were some old Taiwanese friends of SG who tried to help us in their personal capacity (but not the present Taiwan government) and for that we are grateful. Incidentally, China apparently offered us military training facilities too, but we declined because that would have created political problems for us in maintaining our independent and neutral stance.

Well it's Bloomberg, so it's to be expected. The defining characteristics of a successful empire is power, charm, and grace. A declining power like the US has already lost the latter two. As a young child living in the UK I thought the US was effortlessly brilliant, they didn't need to prove they were on top of the world because they KNEW they were. Now all you see is cheap jabs, smacktalk, blatant lies, and mafia-like intimidation. It's quite pathetic really. Not only do the world elites see it, but the US elevates China by branding them as a rival. Like how Voldemort fulfils the prophecy of his own demise by targeting Harry. Either China will rise to the top peacefully, or the US will bring the whole world to war and exterminate humanity through it's own arrogance and insanity.
