This is very similar to what I use. I was taught using new math in the 60s and 70s, but since I've always loved doing math puzzles, some of which involved subtraction, Ive learned to subtract from left to right. In each column, if top digit is smaller than bottom digit, I just add 10 to it. So middle column the problem would be 13-9. Here is the process: 537 - 294 From left to right I get: 5 - 2 = 3, but what follows 5 is smaller than what follows 2, so final result will be on less = *2* (1)3 - 9 = 4, and what follows 3 is greater than what follows 9, so we take are ok = *4* 7 - 4 = *3* Answer, from left to right: *243*

That is amazing, thanks so much for sharing 🥰🙏
I’m on level 2 of Singapore math with my son. The teacher’s guide is hard to understand, so I appreciate videos like yours 👍.

That is amazing! Good luck and thank you for such a nice comment 🥰🙏
This is a MUCH better way to teach this than what we were taught in school with borrowing. Thanks for thus great concept and video!

In the U.S., it's called the Partial Differences method. I prefer it over the traditional method as well.

Actually the 300-60 you still have to carry over right? In order to get the 240. You'd also need to carryover if the last number was also larger on top
I grew up in Singapore and I have never done Maths this way before. When has this become Singapore Maths? Actually with the traditional way of borrowing, if we have done enough practice, we can be super fast too. But I will definitely have a try at this Singapore Maths that you are showing.

I totally agree! I have seen this in certain books of Singapore Math, it’s an optional method of teaching, I believe. Thank you for watching and giving it a try 🥰🙏
Wow, this is epic! I'm going to practice with my kids

Students who have not learned about negative numbers may struggle with this.

We aren’t working with negative numbers here. When the top number is smaller than the bottom, we think of it as “we owe” and count upwards toward that number. Hope this makes sense 😃🙏
pretty coool! 🤩

Isn’t it? 😊👍
Seems convoluted to me. Getting the answer doing it the traditional (old way) was much quicker! Why do you need all that "I have' and "I owe" stuff.

@@thetheashow1324 it is in one of the Singapore Math curriculum books, but sadly, I don’t know exactly which one 😔
All most the Same Method was taught some 100+ years ago in India called Vedic Math It was more effective than that this, Due to politics it gone into history

you are absolutely right! thank you for watching and commenting 😊🙏
I'm surprised that this is so inefficient. I thought it would be cleaner than this, given that Singapore Math has a reputation... and that you're calling this "mental." It's a lot more bookkeeping (and thus has more opportunity to introduce error) than either the one-up-one-down approach of Old Math or the "borrowing" method of New Math.

Thanks for watching and for your feedback! It may not be for everyone, but if you can get used to it, it’s definitely easier to subtract mentally going left to right instead of the other way around 😊🙏
Congratulations for complicating subtraction😂😂😂😂
