Singapore airlines: One dead and 30 injured in tragic flight | Sally Gethin

“Those passengers who were belted up, their heads, went up into where you have the overhead lockers inside the cabin interior.”
A 73 year-old man has been killed and 30 others injured in an “extremely, extremely rare” event after their flight from London to Singapore was hit by severe turbulence, says travel and aviation expert Sally Gethin.

People today take absolutely no notice of safety rules. This is evident on practically every flight I have ever taken. It’s the same when you are on the beach and no swimming signs are clearly posted due to rip tides and dangerous currents, but the majority of people ignore them. It’s very sad that someone lost their life but as a society we need to take safety regulations more seriously.

Could it be because we are flooded with safety notices and signs all over the place, most of which are totally unnecessary. We become used to simply ignoring them…. and important ones that we should pay attention to get ignored in the fog of unnecessary CYA.

Because they are better than others and they don't have to be seated, they can stand up the whole flight. Also, global warming, white males and the patriarchy, and Israel occupying Palestine are to blame.

Its not tragic. The area over the bay of Bengal is notorious for air pockets with large fluctuations in air pressure due to peripheral mountainins around the bay funnelling air randomly spiralling upwards. Ive flown this area often, and have had people ejected from their seat onto the aisle, have their head crash into the overhead bins, etc. So, just buckle up through the flight and be prepared.

The worst air turbulence I’ve ever encountered was near Bangkok. En route from Singapore to Manchester. It was very scary that some women were actually crying and screaming at one point. The whole plane was shaking up to down and side to side. I always buy extra travel insurance, just in case…

I've seen anecdotes about how the area they were flying through is often subject to clear air turbulence. While not everyone injured was at the toilet at the same time, it's likely going to be more nuanced than blaming it solely on the passengers. I agree you should always wear your seatbelts while seated in cruise, but that's not foolproof. And note that there were also 7 crew that were injured, not just passengers.

Another tragic reminder for people to _always_ keep their seatbelts on in flight. As shown here, in some cases, pilots cannot predict when turbulence is going to happen, or how severe it can be. RIP to the soul lost & best wishes to the injured (both mentally & physically), but please do keep your seatbelts on. Just like in a car, it can save your life (& save you from a lifetime of pain).

They tell you to wear your seatbelt when seated. Whilst I sympathize with the injured and the relatives and friends of the deceased, I do not understand why people ignore common sense advice. As a pilot of small aircraft I have been bounced around and I always wear my seat belt. Is it time to enforce a seat belt rule like obeying the crews directions. People should not need to be bullied but if they refuse to be sensible, should they be forced to comply?

Sadly people in society of today have become a lot much more toxic and a lot much more presentful in following the rules and to more likely to be very prone of flowers in the rules rather than just following them in the first place. The more toxic people become, the more aggressive and the more stressful and the more likely to die I believe that people are going to be like these days. 😢😢😢 It's saddening for a day in singapore and as well as thailand thanks to the efforts of helping the casualties who are involved in this incident and I shall pray for those who are involved in this disaster.
