Since God withholds forgiveness, can we? | When & How to Forgive | GotQuestions.org

When and how to forgive someone, that’s the question. Since God can withhold forgiveness, can we? What does forgiveness mean and are we expected to forgive and forget even if there is no confession and repentance? In this video, Pastor Nelson with Bible Munch answers those questions looking at forgiveness in the Bible, steps to forgiveness, and what the Bible says about forgiving others.

I agree that this advice he gave seems way off. It has caused one of my sons to not forgive me for many things and he also feels the need to hold anything that I do wrong over me. I think this was the video he watched. Although other videos from this organization seem to say the opposite of this video, weird.

Just in case God's word is a mirror of our future, if our future selves who see the face of God condemn us completely, and remove themselves from God's presence altogether, because they can't bear to see the goodness of God's face(as maybe in the case of demons) then umm will God stop them?

wow, pride and unforgiveness hide in the dark recesses of a heart that a person may believe is clean and ready to meet Christ. I know this, because my pride hid unforgiveness in my heart. Pastor Nelson mentioned here that while we should be willing and ready to forgive anytime at a moment's notice, we can also follow GOD's lead by "not extending forgiveness" to those who are deliberately unwilling to repent of their wrongdoings (clip 5:24 to 5:44).

No It is not correct. Read Mark 11:25 and matthew 6:12-15 as examples of forgiving without someone asking for forgiveness. Also the bible says not to grudge against each other lest WE be condemned, James 5:9. Forgiveness in not only for the other person, it is for you. Also what about love, mercy, long suffering, and forbearing one another’s faults? Remember the character of God in these situations as well. The Lord forgave the children of Israel in the ild testament before they repented for His own namesake. Look, I had some major hurt from my father and it made me sick as I got older. God literally woke me up in my sickness and convicted me to forgive. He died in a car accident 20 years ago, he could not “repent” or apologize. I needed to forgive to lift a curse. Love is the fulfillment of the law. Not requiring everyone to grovel at your feet just so you can grant them forgiveness. We are not God. So in one sence you can forgive as Jesus forgave you, but you also can’t forgive as Jesus forgave you unless you are going to get on the cross for someones sins and shed your Holy blood for them. It’s not the same. We have sin, Jesus didnt, so we are required to forgive. He is not as he is the only judge. Hope this helps.

I do not think that is what that verse means I think God is saying if someone repents the focus is on our response to then not on their asking for forgiveness our attitude and response should be to extend the forgiveness that we already probably did but even if that hadn't occurred which as a believer I think that it most likely should have occurred then we need to SHOW them this or respond to them in such a way as they will see Christ and experience the love and forgiveness God has for them when they repent to him as well if they haven't. Otherwise I do not think that the rest of scripture would align with what this man has probably read from somewhere to say because in his other videos this does not seem to be what he says there.

So I bet you don't even rebuke the offender or tell them what did they do wrong just like what is commanded to us in Luke 17:3 when a person did wrong upon and just let them get away believing that God has forgiven them as well without repentance? You're missing a lot of biblical verses that does not imply unconditional forgiveness and got over domesticated by those 2 verses you quoted Mark 11:25 and Matthew 6:2-15. When Paul the Apostle had encountered Alexander the Coppersmith, he warned Timothy to be "beware" of this person and prayed to God that he may be punished for what he did instead of saying "Father, forgive Alexander for he does not know what he's doing" (2 Timothy 4:14) When Paul the Apostle had encountered Elymas the Sorcerer, he did not say "Father, forgive Elymas" instead he calls the sorcerer "Son of the Devil" and blinded him by the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:8-10) It also makes me wonder the difference on how Stephen and Paul approached there opposing parties. When Stephen had been stoned to death, he did say "Father forgive them" because he was probably martyred and died for his faith and wants the opposing parties to be saved unlike Paul that some people did wrong to him and he did not forgive them without repentance. Even Jesus, when he saw the people turned the temple into marketplace, he did not say "Father forgive them for they turned your temple into a market place. Do not hold this sin against them!" but instead he chase them away by whip. There are some christian organization out there that believes that once you accepted Jesus Christ, all your sins will be forgiven without repentance and that is something that I will never believe.

I know I felt the same way it was like a demon took over the video it is so strange. It was awhile ago but I think my son saw this video and started acting it out towards me with withholding forgiveness towards me because he thinks I need to change all the things he doesn't agree with me about before he will forgive me or something. It has been most horrible. This advice is demonic I think can't believe this is even a real video done by them. I had to find it again just to check but I am glad this time I checked the comments since I am not the only one thinking this is bizarre teaching. If your son is withholding forgiveness for that reason, it is because of the evil one. And greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world! I don't speak to satan, I leave that to Jesus but I feel the strongest sense that all you have to do is stand on our Lord's promises and He will fight for you! Don't give satan a second thought, focus on Jesus and the phenomenal power He has to work in your son. And then just watch it happen! He is the one who can heal all wounds. God bless you and saying prayers for you and your son!

I don't agree, in the Lord's Prayer it says to forgive those who trespass against us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. It does not say to go to them and have them acknowledge their fault before we can forgive them.

  • @Motivationeer

This is the entire point of his video (which was BRILLIANT and sorely needed). Whenever we see the word "forgive" in the New Testament, it is under the context that the person who wronged you has come to you and asked for forgiveness. That means the Lord's prayer would say this in context: "And when we come to you and ask for forgiveness of our trespasses, we will forgive those who ask us for forgiveness as well." If you want the perfect example of this from Jesus' own mouth, read Matthew 18:21-25

  • @christineliljeholm633

the focus is on our response to a person who has hurt us we need to express forgiveness to them not just forgive from our hearts but Show this to a person who is sorry for their healing not really ours, do you see. We are not God we cannot be him they need to repent to God but we are called to forgive we are not to be their judge for Salvation. They need to repent to Him for that but I do not believe that we can hold a grudge against them when we are not perfect it would be hypocritical. As scripture says in Matthew 7:5 “Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.”

No…not joking. The video that I replied to (in this thread) is spot on. The word “forgive” means nothing outside of the context of a “debt”. We forgive a debt. That means we forgive something owed to us. That means the person who owes the debt is aware that they owe the debt and the person who is going to forgive the debt announces that they are not requiring the person who owes them, to pay them back. They forgive the debt. Please read the Matthew passage I mentioned. Thanks.

Another thing I disagree with this man in the video I think his take on God is from a man not the Holy Spirit. I am planning to never use their ministry again after researching into them. Like I said I do not think they have listened to God but have a man made belief system even if they know Jesus they are listening to man not God in certain things. It is simple accept Jesus and repent of your sins and God will forgive you of your sins. With people we are not God we do not have that right to hold people accountable in the respect of we need to make sure that they change before we will accept their apology this in my opinion is God's job to help people change not men.@@kridler112
