Sinai: Inside the UK's most versatile sound system

Музыка

Sinai is one of the UK’s most versatile sound systems. Deep Medi, Tectonic Recordings and Young Echo are some of the labels and collectives to have hosted the roaming Sheffield audio installation, which bridges the gap between traditional dub sound system culture and modern bass music.
Founded by Huw Williams, Sinai Sound System began life as part of the travelling speaker stack for legendary dub outfit Iration Steppas. Over the years, Sinai has grown in size and reputation, travelled the continent and endured a devastating flood in its hometown.
In this film, FACT travels to Sheffield to hear the story of Sinai Sound System and follows it to Bristol’s Trinity Centre as it prepares to provide the audio at the fifth birthday party for Batu’s Timedance label.

It's one thing running a PA system but Sound System is definitely next level. About a decade ago my son came from a night out talking about the bass in a club he'd been to, so I booked tickets for Iration Steppas at a venue in Leeds, Mark Iration was playing along side OBF from France (I believe). The bass was so powerful that it even blew me away and I remember Iration before he was Iration. Over the years he's certainly come on in leaps and bounds. One love, sound system culture 😃👍

Ah man, I was coping alright with lockdown until now... now I just want to stand in front of this surrounded by happy people. One of the most incredible experiences I've ever had at a night was hearing and feeling this sound system, split into two, in two corners of a room that couldn't have been more than 15 x 40 ft, at Hope Works. Just continuous uncontrollable grinning and full-on body vibration.

The average Jamaican Sound System plays double 18” Subwoofer and mean while playing double 21” Subwoofer gaining fast in popularity.

  • @therealchayd

    @therealchayd

I've had this experience, all the clubs I worked at had systems (usually CVA) that were built to a price and never maintained (mostly because management didn't want to invest in new drivers because profit margin blah blah blah). Either that, or having systems that were vastly underpowered for the venue, so had to be driven hard in order to get any decent coverage, and then ended up sounding shit. I find that privately owed clubs care more about their systems than high street venues.

I really like the rubber-based feet for the TT's. Back in the day ( early '80s) I was young and dumb and using a pair of BFI Bullfrog PA's with a monster Project One receiver. In order to isolate the TT from all the shaking I took two rectangular kitchen sponges and cut them in half, then placed each sponge on a saucer and each saucer under a foot on the TT. When we threw a party I'd wet the sponges and never had a problem again with records skipping.

As a sound tech, rig owner and audiophile, I've been trying to figure out a way to bridge the gap between what you hear with clarity, depth and space in the studio with high end speakers, and bringing that to live sound world. You lot overseas have the ability to travel around europe with your soundsystems, to many different audiences, but alas here in North America, its just not the same. Thank you for the in depth look at all of the gear!

This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. In purpose built track cars, rubber bushings are replaced with solid metal mounts in the subframe (connecting the suspension to the body) to improve the feedback the driver receives from the road. Interestingly the equations for "waves" are analogous across science, whether they be electrical, mechanical, or audible waves -- all being magnitudes of energy over time and space. Respect to Sinai for pushing the craft forward

What an interesting video. First video I ever saw about big sound systems. I never see videos like this about other sound companies that install huge sound systems. My very first experience listening to a big sound system work in a club in the late 80's and into the 90's, was at the Shelter in NYC. It was actually my first time ever going clubbing in NYC.But then I was told of some other club that had a huge sound system in NYC called "The Paradise Garage" and the sound there was done by Richard Long & Associates. Sadly I never got to experience The paradise Garage because it had closed back in '87 or '88 not sure of the year but around that time. People kept telling me that Richard Long & Associates always installed big sound systems that had amazing sounds. So I was told that a popular club in Newark New Jersey called Zanzibar had Richard Long & Associates sound system in there and to go check it out. So I went to check out club Zanzibar, as Im walking in I feel my Adams apple bouncing and as I'm getting closer in to the dance area my chest and rest of my body was pounding. I was like wow, now this is a sound system. It sounded tight, sounded loud but clean as if I was wearing the best pair of headphones and cranking it all the way up and no distortion. what an experience the Zanzibar was, and popular dj Tony Humphries was pounding that good deep house. Then someone told me about the famous Sound Factory in NYC. That space had an amazing sound system, it was done by Phazon Sounds. Again, a great sounding sound system by Phazon Sounds. It had those bass bottoms thumping real good and clean and tight. Had fond memories of that space, The Sound Factory was my to go to clubbing every weekend. As I got older I moved too far away and that was the end of my clubbing days. Today, I sometimes get the urge to go some place where they have huge sound systems where the dj is pounding some good house music. Well, that's all I have to say and again great video Fact magazine.

The system at Ministry of Sound was based on the RLA design and it sounds amazing - vastly overpowered for the venue, so plenty of headroom. I used to work with the guy who got a job with MoS as their head engineer, and subsequently left there to work for Pioneer Pro Audio and worked on the development of their GS systems which were inspired by the MoS system, so I guess those would be the grandchildren of the original RLA systems from back in the day.

While it's an entertaining idea, it wasn't the vibrations heating up the air. Even if you crammed two dozen 15kW M-Force subs into a tiny 500 person venue, the vibrations wouldn't heat up the air (but you would pass out from the agonising pain).

Francesco Spinolo are these actually good, or just powerful? The best soundsystem I’ve heard had a great body load but not too much... and yet you could hear all the elements through the highs fairly evenly.

My dad has a sound system in America called Starship Connection! He wouldn’t let me get into it when I was of age to keep me from vices!!!! I regret not going into audio engineering.

Great video. I own a 5-way, Funktion-One Evo 7 system with 8 2x21" horn loaded subs and 2 double infrabass horns.. Pretty versatile, but it's been collecting dust as most sound systems around the world. Dreaming of getting it back on the sand floor.

The Infra-bass speakers are dope! Helped a guy set up 4 infra-bass in a symphony hall. That feeling stays with you for years.

Everytime I see one of these sound system videos it just reminds me I want my own. Then I remember Ive no space to store the huge speaker stacks. Still have the ridiculous wattage amps though so maybe one day...
