Sin and Human Nature in the Qur'an W/ Gabriel Said Reynolds

This is a clip about the Qur'an's understanding of sin and human nature. Does the Qur'an see human nature as good or evil? Why do humans sin according to the Qur'an? I discuss answers to these questions and more in this video. It is taken from a longer lecture that I gave about my book, Allah: God in the Qur'an (Yale 2020). Please watch the full video here: • Allah: God in the Qur'an

The Quran has mentioned three kinds of human self or nafs نفس (1) Ammarah: the self that urges man to evil. النّفس الأمّارة بالسّوء (2) Lawwamah: the self that feels repentant at doing wrong, thinking wrong and willing wrong and reproaches man for this; and the same is called conscience in modern terminology. النّفس اللّوّامة (3) Mumtmainnah: the self that feels full satisfaction at following the right path and abandoning the wrong path. النّفس المطمئنّة By the way, it was not the wife of ‘Potiphar’ who said that nafs is ammarah bisou’ or man’s soul incites him to do evil. It was Joseph who said that. 12:50 The king said, Bring him to me. When the kings messenger came to Joseph, he said, Go back to your master and ask him about the women who cut their hands: my Lord knows well their guile 12:51 The king asked the women, What was the truth of the affair in which you tried to seduce Joseph? The women said, God forbid! We know no evil of him. The wife of the nobleman said, The truth has now come to light. It was I who tried to seduce him; he is surely an honest man 12:52 From this, said Joseph, [The nobleman] should know that I did not betray him in his absence, and that God does not guide the plotting of the treacherous 12:53 I am not trying to absolve myself: for mans very soul incites him to evil unless my Lord bestows His mercy. Indeed, my Lord is forgiving and merciful All this has nothing to do with original sin from the Christian theology. According to the Quran Man is created with faculty to distinguish between right and wrong and a free will. 91:1 By the sun and its rising brightnes 91:2 and by the moon as it follows it 91:3 and by the day as it reveals its glor 91:4 and by the night when it draws a veil over it 91:5 by the sky and how He built i 91:6 and by the Earth and how He spread it 91:7 by the soul and how He formed it 91:8 then inspired it to understand what was right and wrong for it 91:9 He who purifies it will indeed be successful 91:10 and he who corrupts it is sure to fail. 90:4 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial 90:5 Does he think then that no one has power over him 90:6 He says, I have spent enormous wealth 90:7 Does he then think that no one sees him 90:8 Have We not given him two eyes 90:9 and a tongue, and a pair of lips 90:10 and shown him the two paths. The Hebrew Bible has no original sin theology. Jesus never mentioned anything about original sin except that God forgives the sins of a repentant person. Saul on the other hand needed Jesus to die for the believers’ sins. He claimed anyone who commits a sin is judged to die. Man he claimed cannot save himself. This is in total contradiction to the Hebrew Bible, the prophets and above all Jesus himself. Saul made it all up. It was all in his head. There is no connection to reality. The Calvinists believe in the TUPLIP. They believe Man is rotten to the core and there is no good in him. He cannot do good even if he wanted to. Man is DEPRAVED they claim. They claim Man cannot save himself by being good. Only God has the power to make Man acceptable to God. And because God is sovereign, Man has to be chosen by God to be saved. Those are called elect. God choses whom he wishes to be saved and the rest are doomed. Where did they get all that? Not from Jesus. I know that. It is all rubbish of course. You all have Saul and Augustine to blame. Good luck with that.

If you think calvinist are crazy, tell us then how much good do you need to do to according to the quran to please God and qualify to heaven? If you dont know the precise answers it proves the calvinist point that only God can change man to please himself

Its TULIP and not TUPLIP. It wasnt an original of calvin but a formulation made in the 20th century to formulize calvinist doctrine. In christianity god created in his image, which is god. In islam god created humans out of sperm, which tends to be mischiveous.

These topics are very profound, I suggest to interview and Islamic scholar who can explain in depth. My own understanding is The One God allows for temptations and adornment of bad things to act as a catalyst (which helps the chemical process without interfering) so that we can accomplish much more in our limited life.

Dear Gabriel, in your article you say that the Quran doest share the biblical teaching that Hod created Sdam in his image and likeness. But : doesn't the term "khalifa" have the same meaning than "tselem elohim" ? In rabbinical tradition the image of godnin the human resides in the spirit blowed by God in Adam. And the Quran too says than Allah put his spirit in Adam. So...

@@ExploringtheQuranandtheBible By the way I know at least two hadiths that also say that Adam was created in the image or likeness of Al-Rahman. In one of them, Prophète Muhammad said that during a battle, it's forbidden to hit the enemies on the face because they are created in God's image. What is your view about these kinds of hadiths?

Why the Quran doesn't use this expression and hadiths use it (like the Bible). Do you think the Quran wants to distamciate itself by the biblical teaching or to precise it?

Hallo professor reynolds, what does sperm has anything to with manifest adversery? If god created humans from sperm, then they became manifest adversery, then isnt that mean god was responsible for humans disobedience? I cannot find how sura yunus 10:44 can detach god from humans misbehavior, according to the first first. How does this concept of sin influence islamic laws? Thanks in advance for your reply.
