Rear projection, more like. That's a big part of why Kubrick's movies are so incredible, he didn't have any computers to blue screen with. You watch 2001 like "Okay meh what's the big deal?" But there's no computer generated effects in that entire movie. Even the fictional computers running the spaceship in the movie wouldn't have been theoretically powerful enough to make the movie's effects.

The orange eating sequence absolutely slayed me. I don't know what's better - Willie's line about an orange eating class, or the fact that such a class actually turned out to exist, or Hans Moleman making an opposite and equally ridiculous comparison to Homer's, or Grandpa Simpson impatiently thumping the table in the reverse of Willie. That might be one of my favourite Simpsons clips of all time.

These cutaways work better than the ones shown on Family Guy because they're either real flashbacks or daydream sequences that actually have something to do with the plot of the episode or act as a punchline to a previously built up joke. Family Guy cutaways, on the other hand, not only have very little to do with the plot of the episode, but also, try to be their own separate joke with almost no build up or punchline whatsoever.

The Simpsons' cutaways and flashbacks were neat segments that showed up every couple of episodes to give a bit more insight of a certain character's past or a fun dream/future reality while still sticking to the plot and providing humour for it's brief appearance. Family guy uses these transitions as a gimmick that takes up half an episodes worth of screen time with little to no correlation to the story all for the sake of a running gag or lousy one-liner. God bless the golden age Simpsons cast for setting a bar on scenes like these.

One thing I can say about these: they tie in to the plot, they are relevant to what's said, don't overstay their welcome and holy fuck they're not all kickstarted with a metaphor or simile like "this is like X when Y did Z". Not gunna bash every family guy cutaways cause some of them are genuinely funny and I understand that not everything said or shown has to be directly relevant to the story, letting the animators, writers and voice actors to do some dumb shit without much consequence or need to drag the story far out the way but they can stand to 1. Not let them take so long (like IIRC there was one where stewie was insulting a celebrity in a bar for a minute+ straight what had no punchline and no humour) and 2. Have it be organic and not a character saying something ridiculous

Unlike Family Guy, The Simpsons actually used these gags in conjunction with the storyline and did it very smartly, usually with a hilarious one liner added afterwards, whilst Family Guy just use them to fill the episode running time and half the time they are just pointless jabs at celebrities which usually just end up being long winded and boring. All the more reasons why the Simpsons won Emmys and Family Guy hasn't.

The truest thing ever said by a human being. Though the cutaway jokes in the early family guy seasons (seasons 1-4) were actually pretty funny, later on they became over reliant with the cutaway gags which were rarely funny and were just stale. You are very correct about how the cutaway gags in the Simpsons were smartly written and were part of the storyline. Family guy literally had an episode where Peters friends came over and had some fun while Peter was supposed to watch Stewie. Lois gets home and of course she’s angry and In order for her to forget what happened, Peter takes us to a Conway Twitty cutaway/segment that lasts over 2 minutes. I’m dead serious. So yeah no wonder The Simpsons won Emmys and Family guy didn’t.

The Simpsons seem to just rely more on celebrity appearances and current events at this point. Episodes like Lisa goes gaga or Bart vs Itchy and Scratchy make me turn away from the series. Modern Family guy is still worse than modern Simpsons but I think it’s time for The Simpsons to just end. I also do feel like that they are begging to end like Family Guy is trying to do.

Family Guy does some things different, and the cutaway gags used to be one of the main draws of the show. Everyone was quoting family guy cutaways when I went to school. Also like the guy above me said, in the Simpsons they feel more like flashbacks than cutaways. Family Guy just wants to tell a joke, the Simpsons want to enrich the plot while also telling jokes. Usually FG plots aren't too deep (or atleast not as deep as a good Simpsons episode), they're just foundations used to tell jokes. That's great if it's your thing, some people just want to laugh. People like different styles of humor, quit being a snob about it. Both shows have had their highs and lows, but I love them both

The Simpsons is more grounded in reality and structure, whereas Family Guy is wackier and more free-flowing. Really? This isn't even funny at all. I never found The Simpsons funny, not even in the early seasons. Not to mention that the show is a complete shell of what it used to be. At least Family Guy isn't completely dead like The Simpsons

Absolutely Mad that in the first clip it flashes back to 1977 & Homer is an adult. Scary. Probably In a few years modern Homer won’t have even been born yet

Pick any clip from any older pop culture and the comments are filled with boring people whining about how the newer thing isn't as good as the older thing. I saw a clip of Spiderman 2, and it was full of people whining about how "the MCU Spiderman sucks". Like that's a fucking debate we need to have.

@@jmckendry84 There totally needs to be a time when humans really need to make a "True" animated movies that touched the soul and heart of the viewers of all ages. Somebody hand-drawn and computer animation, it's not just the movies, TV shows as well for all ages on Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, and the Walt Disney company needs to take there place in the circle of animations shows and movies for everyone.

@@jmckendry84 Walt Disney said "If you can dream it, you can do it, and don't let anybody say you can't". This is my biggest dream goal of bringing the 2-D animated style from Disney once again and I'll be a movie director as well.

I remember watching the land of chocolate episode when I was a kid. I used to laugh so hard once he bit the dog. It's not as funny now for some reason. Maybe I've just turned sour as I got older.
