Simplifying Life, Living More Fully - Joshua Becker

More is not always better, and stuff does not lead to happiness. In this one day Focus on the Family broadcast Jim Daly & John Fuller talk with Joshua Becker author of The More of Less (bit.ly/2RcrMga).
Joshua shares his story of being overwhelmed by stuff, how a neighbor introduced him to the concept of minimalism, and how he and his wife began to make intentional choices to minimize their possessions and maximize their lives. He shares practical ideas on how to get started de-cluttering, how to get on the same page as your spouse, and how generosity and gratitude help us combat consumerism.
To learn more about this broadcast and the practice of minimizing your possessions and maximizing your life, continue to our website here: bit.ly/2CSvT8g

Adapt to a lifestyle, be thrifty, set a budget, save money, and make investments to live within your means. I benefited from this as a six-figure income. With this strategy, my retirement savings have increased by almost $1 million.

I use to be like this when I was younger, now I'm way better with money. I'm just not impressed with a lot of material items anymore. Having a budget and having patience is something I had to practice overtime.

Before my dad passed away from cancer he said, that he was taking with him all the great memories we shared together, and his advice was ,enjoy your child, take care of your body, and focus on good experiences, because when we leave this earth we leave with nothing just the experiences and good memories. He was happy till the end. Love your children, take care of your body and enjoy life.

Great advice! I don’t want my kids to be burdened by my possessions when I’m gone. So, I’m constantly purging and saying “no” to more stuff unless I feel it’s necessary. It’s been very freeing!

As I begin this journey to less, I have come to realize I have been excessive in so many areas of my life. My eyes have been opened! I feel so much freedom in getting rid of all of my excess baggage. This includes possessions, weight, shopping, screen time....so much excess.

I think Joshua said that connected with me most, was about coming to terms with the fantasy self, that’s me right there. I have really struggled to identify myself, and I’m realising at 60, that I’ve really not been honest enough to recognise my own personal weaknesses and have bought and owned thing that are connected to who I’d like to be, and not who I am.

I so wanted to be a maximalist, but never had enough money to get and have what I thought I wanted. I was always wanting more, but never able to use what I acquired. I think I was trying to be something I wasn't. That fantasy self. What an eye opener. I want to cry. Josh is a truth seeker. Under all that stuff is the truth.

I've been a minimalist for years, and I have finally let go of an expensive doll (gifted to an enthusiastic collector) and my Steuben saddle. I'm looking forward to spending my time making myself more clothes and being present in annual trail rides...and not storing things that have been part of my fantasy life for too long. Thank you for sharing, Joshua.

During my recent move eighteen months ago. I gave away or sold most of my stuff. I moved with seven pieces of furniture and thirteen boxes. It felt like I took a fifty pound back pack off my back. I asked myself the question. When was the last time I used an item? If had been more than six months I got rid of it. Getting rid of the clutter will not only free up your space. It will also declutter your mind.

Joshua was the first person I heard speaking on this subject. I was always a minimalist but didn’t know there was actually a word for it. I held on to certain things, because I felt they were gifted to me, or they managed to get into my home for one reason or any other, Joshua helped me give myself permission to donate these things, I am much more happy, since I did.. Joshua keep spreading your word. You have helped so many Thank you for having him as a guest, I will subscribe

During Christmas people go crazy with shopping and they all stressed. People forget what Christmas really means??? It’s the day to celebrate Jesus’s birthday and that means focusing on praying and giving back to the community, helping the poor and spending time with family. Not about Santa and buying more things that we don’t need. Let’s not forget how bad it is for our environment either. People should start trying to be zero waste and buy only when you need. Buy second hand stuff and toys for your kids and focus on experiences rather then keep buying. Spend more time with each other rather then just buying. Buy quality over quantity.

I was given approx 60 pairs of jeans, once a year I take them off the top shelf to wash them, a few loads and days out drying and taking up space only to pack them away again after trying to slowly purge. Into the donation box and as I am asked to always say what I have chosen to purge, I'm asked to take out all the wide leg cut style for eg. so I did and I packaged them to send back to sender who already purged them the 1st time, then I purged them only to have to send them back, we'll they've ended up back in my cupboard together with an additional 36 pairs I managed to purge this year over and above the pairs I purged 3 years ago when I said I know what's going to happen but I refuse to have to go through the same batch my family and I have purged, 1, 2, 3, or 4 times over because I know what's going to happen, one day I'm going to inherit that and then some, but I don't want the stuff. Sure a few selected pieces is lovely but not when it's consuming more of your time, space, energy and valuable real-estate in hopes that one day the items might fit/suit me. While it's a lovely gesture, I'm glad I can be honest but it's not so easy to purge as I've barely been able to part with them yet.

I am not necessarily a minimalist, but I have had to minimize greatly when I was expecting my 9th baby and all the rooms were full, so I had to fit a crib into our small room, plus all of baby's things. I don't like disorder, so that meant keeping fewer items around. I focused on getting rid of my own things, not my husband's. What began as a necessity, became a blessing. I have minimal toys now for this little one because I have nowhere to store them. Little ones like to stand on a stool at the counter and help mommy instead anyway!

Alicia.... true a very tempting place to be everyday....I think I’d handle it in multiple ways....1. Make no immediate impulse purchases... If something new comes into the store, I’d think on it for a week or so to see If I TRULY LOVED it or was I just being tempted by new “Eye candy”. Secondly I’d set a monthly budget for new expenditures.... say 50 dollars or 100 or whatever YOU feel appropriate. Once you spend that amount , your done until next month.( once again the will power factor comes strongly into play.) I think I’d try to hold out for one truly fabulous piece ( a 300 dollar Cashmere sweater) instead of multiple “lesser” items. Just some of my thoughts😁... Blessings on your Journey!🙏

Alicia Maxie My suggestion would be to just not buy anything. See your job as a way to make money. Your employer would love you to spend your money right back in the store. Don’t do it. You don’t need the new stuff that comes into the store. Just replace what you need to and ignore the rest. It is not in the store for you. The items are in the store for everyone else who want to waste their money or who needs to replace something.

Oh the temptation… I hear you. How does one resist? When I was younger I used to think that as long as the bills were paid on time, I could spend my money on anything I wanted. Decades later I started understanding that some of the money we spend on extra unnecessary things, if it were invested, it could make you wealthy when invested over a long period of time. Wishing you the best Alicia.

The parable of the sower is mis-interpreted badly in this episode. The seed is the Gospel (Jesus, Himself, explains this). The weeds in the soil that choke the seed is the heart of someone who was never saved at all, rather loved money more than Jesus. Started to germinate, maybe, but never bore fruit. It was the Gospel that was choked out. It has nothing to do with swimming pools & pleasures that make a Christian less-effective. That person is a false Christian
