Simplex SP24 Vs Stock Coil! | Depth Test | Nokta Makro Simplex+ | Metal Detecting | Episode 84

For my birthday this week I was lucky enough to receive the Elliptical SP24 coil for my Nokta Makro Simplex+! But, how does the new coil compare to the stock coil in terms of depth?
Here I pit both coils against each other and compare their depth performances!

Hi Ron! Thanks for the lovely comment 😀 The depth is a guide rather than something to be taken literally. It assumes the target is a coin about 3/4 in diameter. Each level is 'roughly' 2 inches. Bear in mind though that if the target is bigger than 3/4 inches, the machine will think it's closer to the surface and if it's smaller it will think it's further away.

Great video. I plan on doing something similar tomorrow. I was out for the first time with my sp24 today on a field which is usually full of signals. But after digging shallow lead for a while I only had 2 decent finds in 4 hours! Ok one was a beautiful Roman Siliqua which made up for the day, but I ended up going to another field and putting the stock coil back on as I felt the sp24 wasn’t performing well at all. It could just be me, it could just be “one of those days” but it didn’t feel totally right. I was on ploughed fields with sensitivity maxed and a quick air test of my Siliqua was only getting about 6-8 inches. Admittedly I did try later with the stock and it was around the same which is why I want to do the test you did tomorrow and compare. It’s possible I’ve got a dud coil maybe? Will find out tomorrow hopefully. I enjoy watching your videos, very informative and well made. Definitely a good inspiration for my channel going forward!

I get a lot of quiet (and sometimes not so quiet) false signals which turn out to be nothing at all. So I just dig the definite ones. Any tips? Hi Conor, Thank-you! Glad you're enjoying the videos! It may depend on the kind of land you're detecting on. Sounds like the ground is mineralised to a point so it may just be they way it will be. If the false signals tend to be in the low iron range you could try turning the iron volume down. Or dropping the sensitivity a bit. Alternatively, try ground balancing manually in case the mineralisation is throwing off the auto balance function. Hope that helps! Good luck and happy hunting! 😃😎👍

Hi Steve, Yes, smaller coils...especially elliptical ones, will be less chatty than the larger ones. Smaller surface area means less space for interference to register. That's not to say the bigger coils are particularly chatty or unstable when the machine is set for the conditions 😊😎👍

With the normal coil and that comes with the simplex when you buy it. reference depth let's say it says 3bars i dig down 3 bars nothing but it still says 3 bars I repeat the same procedure 3 time's and it says exactly the same thing 3bars.even though I've dug down 3times that what does this mean.in other words if I came across a target shouldn't it Have shown how deep it was the first time.

Hi Paul, The depth indicator assumes the target is about an inch in diameter. If it's smaller than that it'll show deeper than it actually is and if it's bigger it'll show shallower than it actually is. It's an indication rather than something to be taken literally 👍

Do you have any way to do your depth test in a garden of buried coins because you don't have a accurate reading in the air as a buried coins that would be the tell all of the depth of the detector and the coils like the SP 24 and the 28 or even try all the coil line that they have for the detectors

  • @DTEKTSUSSEX

Someone didn't listen... Air tests are fine for COMPARISON purposes. As I clearly stated in the video the ACTUAL depth in the ground will vary but the relative change between the two variables (coils) will be the same. Medium stays the same. One variable changes.

Hi Adam I hope you get this. My name is David from Australia and I started watching your youtube clips around the beginning of this year. I am new at using the Nokta Makro Simplex I bought late last year, and am somewhat impressed with it. Before getting the Simplex, I have been using my much cherished Quest X10 MD which I still have, and I dare say, there is some similarities with the Simplex + and Quest X10 in the control units maybe you could do a comparison in how well the preform. Anyway this is not why I am sending you a msg on here. The question is, I mistakenly bought the Nokta Impact IM24 9.5"x5" DD Search Coil, which I thought it to be the SP 24 DD search coil, because they look the same to me. I am going to return this coil back to the store in Aus, where I bought it from, but I am just wondering, can you tell me if the Nokta Impact IM24 9.5"x5" DD Search Coil compatible with the Simplex or is it only programmed for the Impact? I am asking you because of fair amount of knowledge and experience of the Simplex, and which I have taken on board some of your knowledge, which has worked for me very well.. I hope you don't mind me communicating this this way, but I just like to know ASAP

Any the name I go under is Called Womba Bingi Indig Metal Detecting. I have mostly a Australian 1st nation Indigenous back ground and some mix from my Mothers side, my fathers side being Irish English anyway another time for that. The clip as you'll see at the beginning, is about a snake a 6ft long carpet snake (Python) that we encountered (it was 7th of December last year.) and was lying on the rocks after having a massive feed of something or 2 because the pray what ever it was, pretty big and snake was still digesting it ( must have got a bad case of indigestion lol) The clip is humorous so I hope you'll like it, and put a like to it. I am just about finished my 2nd one but with better quality cams ( not GoPro) It will be called a Afternoon at the beach with a Coke and Jack Daniels lol, you'll see why. Anyway thanks again for your email Mate hear from you soon when you have the time.

Well I ordered one and it’s supposed to be here in a couple days. I don’t get to hunt a lot of farms and I’ve read that you can turn the sensitivity all the way up which should help with the depth loss if there’s any. The main thing is people say like you did it helps in trashy areas and I’ve heard it also kind of stabilize the machine. I think with the stock coils sometimes it’s a little overloaded and this kind of makes it more stable and not as jumpy. I appreciate your quick response and opinion.

Probably not in the ground, no. This is an air test so it will read a little deeper. The point was to compare the two coils...not get a depth measurement.

You're right...if I was looking at getting an actual number. This test was about comparisons between the coils. Obviously depth itself will vary in different ground conditions but the difference in performance was the focus 😃😎👍

Interesting test, but very flawed Adz. If there is no target ID on the screen....in noisy ground the signal return will be washed away by mineralisation, leading to NO faint signal like you showed as your maximum depths. The Simplex also dosen’t respond to a brisk swing speed as the microprocessors aren’t able to decipher all the information properly. Maybe do the test again and this time use an in- ground, un- dug high target like a big silver or Copper coin as the tester. Air tests are very unreliable

Everything you say is correct which is precisely why I never use them to assess the depth in isolation. I only ever use them, as in this case, as a comparison. I tested one coil under one set of circumstances (in this case through the air) and tested the other coil under the same circumstances to get an idea of what differences, if any, there were between the two. Of course the number of inches will change in different mediums and environmental conditions.

Noticed that the SP24 coil was not at a true right angle compared to the stock coil (which could hurt it) and you seem to favor your readings to the SP24 if you compare the beginning of the video... the stock coil seemed to have a bit of an advantage in depth.

These types of tests are tricky because it's hard to show the viewer exactly what I'm seeing and hearing. A slight change to the camera angle can affect how the coil alignment looks, the camera adjusting for a change in ambient noise can make the signals sound different. I took as great a care as I could with the test...even down to using a set square to ensure the coil angle remained constant...although I appreciate that wasn't shown in the video. Thanks for the comment 😊👍

I’m sorry but the depth test was pretty much the same 😂😂 I’ll stick to my stock coil I think.

Exactly...that's the incredible thing. A smaller coil shouldn't be as deep as the stock. By getting the SP24 you get a more precise coil that absolutely LOVES coins and it fantastic in trashy locations and beaches and don't really lose any depth 👍

Lol....you really push the depth like you want us to believe it can go 2 inch lower then the machine allows. Why?

Not sure what you're getting at. As I said in the video I went until the sound became too faint 🤷🏼‍♂️
