The Bicycle Rider backs are the perfect choice. They are quite common at Walgreens & Walmart. I like that they are blue -- blue looks/feels less magical. Everything looks innocent. What bothered me a bit was using "key card" in your patter again & again. It's like mentioning something about magic w/o going into it. It's a bit distracting, & they may not have thought about things like that until you mentioned it. If I used "key card" in the patter, I'd use it for fellow magicians or friends somewhat familiar w/card magic. Then they'd be surprised by how often they've mixed the cards. If I was doing it, I wouldn't move my hands around so much, especially near the cards. That might be perceived as misdirection for switching/moving cards. Otherwise, I like it a LOT! It's nice to see you have a following. I hope you are performing for CA$H.

As explained above. But in more detail. When the card is at the bottom, do the overhand shuffle by big chunk at first until there's only a small chunk left in your hand, now peel off 1 card at a time not slowly, at the normal speed until there's only 1 card left and that 1 card left is the selection at the bottom earlier.

The very first card trick that most laymen learn uses a key card,, so in most cases you are not tipping them off to anything they don't already know. What makes the trick truly baffling is to eliminate the possibility you are using a key card. If you don't want to use the term "key card" then you can just say. "Maybe I know what this top card is, and if you put your card on top of it, then that would mark the spot of your card for me." You can say the same thing in regard to the bottom card. Phrasing it this way, they should understand what you're talking about, and even if they know the key card concept, they may not know the specific term, "key card." Of course, if you're performing it for a magician, you can go ahead and use the term "key card." The other thing I would suggest is, just don't do a trick using a key card in your next trick There are tons of strong tricks that don't require use of a key card.

@@dowaliby1 HI ALFRED, thats a great comment sir. Thanks. Yes. I am aware of how beginners used keycards, and even today the big pros even still use keycards. I was saying that i wouldnt say anything about a keycard to a spectator while doing this trick or any other trick. I dont even want to give the slightest tip that there are keycards used in any card tricks . Thats what i was saying in my comment. But thank you sir. I really did enjoy your excellent comment. Best wishes. Merry Christmas Glen

Thank YOU, Glen, you make excellent points, as well. I have had time to give this more thought during the last several days and it occurs to me that there's no reason whatsoever to say anything about why we are having the spectator shuffle before the card is replaced, or why we are having them shuffle before they complete the cut. If they know about and/or suspect a key card, then the shuffling takes care of that without having to say anything. If on the other hand, they don't know about key cards, then there's even less reason to say anything and in fact doing so may only confuse them, and have the opposite effect of creating some kind of suspicion. On top of that, we are then needlessly tipping a very important subterfuge, as you point out. Have a Magical Christmas!

@@dowaliby1 Hey Alfred, thank you for your kind words and expressive message regarding how us magicians think, haaa haaa. I was only adding my opinion, as you know. But if someone else needs to tell a spectator about the keycards, then thats up to them to make their trick work better. But, I think by telling spectators about our secrets is giving the tricks away. I still think the magic tricks will work with out revealling a key card that we use to find cards. Im glad i could help a little. I wouldnt want to ruin tricks for others. I believe in helping each other in life, no matter what its for. I hate to say that i dont trust people, but if there are hecklers towards a comedian, then what would they do to ruin our magic, hobby, lives, and the gig that we are doing? Thats why i say that i dont want a spectator to destroy our gimmick cards, and our other special cards, to make our tricks to not work. Then we need to take the time to order new gimmicks, and spend money that we shouldnt, unless we insure our magic supplies. I just thought of that now. Lol. Do most clubs have insurance to pay for our gear, if its ruined by their customers? Ive been a pro drummer for the past 36 yrs. I never insured my drums. But my home owners would pay if my house burns down , or gets broken into. If my drums were damaged by the club or customers in the club, i would sue them if they didnt pay, or use their bldg insurance. Thankfully nothing has not happened. I hope to hear from you and to write again. Alfred. God bless you, And have a Merry christmas, and a wonderful new year. Magically yours, Glen polen.

I did the presentation like this: I would take the deck and start turning cards over looking for the 10 of spades and then I would count 11 cards dealing them face up 1 at a time. I would then go past the ace of hearts and keep dealing them up one at a time and I would randomly stop and say: are you willing to bet me a drink that the next card I turn over is your card? They say heck yeah because they saw their card already turned over. You reach over to the ace of hearts and turn it over. I just think it is a better reveal that way and it is quite effective....

Nice trick! Suggestion: When you spot the keycard by the end, tell the audience you haven't seen their card yet, but you'll now make the trick harder by again turning away your head and just "feel" for their card instead. (Then you just continue to count your way to their card, without even looking at the deck.) This eliminates the need for them to shuffle the bottom half, as there is no way you could recognize any key card from the bottom. It also means that you don't even have to _talk_ about key cards in the presentation, and that those in the audience who knows about that mechanic will be even more fooled, as they for most of the trick might think you had a key card at the bottom _until_ you totally break them by finding their card without looking at the cards close to it! The "problem" of them cutting off too big a packet vanishes too, as a bigger packet only helps build suspense as you then count even longer from the key card, without looking.

  • @proudcanadianeh4663

Thanks this is amazing! I guess the only time this falls apart is if, at 4:19, the person makes the cut that is less than the number of cards from the small packet, correct? Because then if you shuffle them you would lose track. So the solution in my estimation would be if they make a tiny cut, like 2 cards, dont mix the cards, complete the cut and can do another, and will still work. This is the only time it would break down

He explained and showed that when you see your key card and there aren't enough cards left at the end, go to the other end and keep counting. So, if it was 11 away and the 11 cards were cut, find the key, count out to the end, let's say 6 cards, and then casually go down the deck to the other end as if you are just trying to get the vibe, and continue to count 5 more.

lol Great bit of misdirection to explain how key cards can be used so that you can sneakily use a keycard! 🤣

Nice trick. One question: You place the chosen card on the top of the deck. Then when you ask the person to cut the deck before shuffeling it, you have to make sure that they don't cut between the chosen card and key card, right? In the last cut after that it doesn't matter as you explained, but in the first one it does, right?

Yes, that’s right. But I’ve never has someone cut that small of a pack off the top for that to happen.

That's why the "small packet" instruction at the beginning is important.

@@marksivert1684 Actually you could also tell the spectator that he should take a package (and don't say it has to be small) but then you ask him to look at the cards (not showing them to you) and choose just a few cards that he likes best out of this packag and put them face down on the table. You decide whether the spectator should put them next to each other so that you can already count the amount of cards or whether ha makes a small pile first before you fan the cards to show and ask him to choose one card.

If you're practicing this trick solo, if you DON'T want to know their random card, when you put it on the table, throw a piece of a Post It note on the back of it. When you fan them out later, when you pick a card, you 100% don't know their card. But you'll pick the one with the Post It on it if you do it right. It's so rewarding to pull a card you don't know, and that's the chosen Post It card.
