So much thought has been went with this follow focus to address all the issues of past follow focus systems from all brands. Pretty impressive.

I run the Tilta Mini FF and it's decent. But SmallRig has added a lot of intelligent design features to this unit that are super handy. The palm grip alone might make me upgrade to it.

Thank you Tom for the review! I think that the possibility to reverse focus comes really useful with lenses such as nikkor that focus in the opposite direction...or for me as a nikon shooter, for the other brand lenses that focus in the wrong direction 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Tom, is there an advantage to using this compared to a camera with back focus buttons to focus in or out?

if you have great AF lens and camera then its not necessary in most situations. If you are working with manual lens then a follow focus is the only way to get good focus.

I was a bit disappointed with the construction quality of the SmallRig F60. Whilst it does feature _some_ aluminum/metal in its build, it unfortunately also features a large amount of composite/ABS plastic which somewhat ruins the user experience and gave me concerns regarding durability. I don't like the friction ring that is on contact with the lens. Give me the positivity and reassuring operation of toothed gears any day of the week. They (SmallRig) also expect to charge silly money for replacement screws and so on. I now use a Fotga DP500iii follow focus which only costs around £30-40 more, but which is entirely made from CNC machined aluminium, has a large aluminium focus ring coated in soft touch rubber, which adds to the tactile experience and aids grip significantly. The wheel is large and smooth in operation and the unit gives absolutely no lashback whatsoever. There is no play in any of the parts and everything is solidly put together, the A/B stops are rock solid, reassuring and the unit has a recess where the A/B pins are stored when not in use; it has marking points which are magnetic and work brilliantly, the unit is adjustable for both right and/or left handed use, works with 15mm or 19mm rods, depending on what you're using. The whole thing is quick release, features a range of gears to adjust for different lenses, turn rates and so on, it has a speed crank with a ball-end (again, made of metal) which can be slotted to the focus ring to use as a focus handle or when used with A/B stops and, to be honest, at this price point there isn't really anything that comes close to the Fotga DP500iii. Add to this the fact that they offer a really good service for replacement screws and parts - without the extortionate charges - and I've found I'm onto a winner. The only other unit I've used, and which was also outstanding, was the Shape LW unit. Again, the build quality os excellent but it's a step up on price from both the smallrig and Fotga offerings, so beyond the scope of this comment. But, as I alluded to early on in my comment, the build quality ofthe Fotga DP500iii over the SmallRig units is what won it for me, as a war/conflict and culture documentary filmmaker.

Wow, excellent feedback here. Thanks, was going to spring for the F60, but I, too, place importance on tactile experience and so will look into the Fotga model you recommended. There's no excuse for cheaply-made gear.
