From watching countless color grading videos, I am convinced you are the only one on KZread that knows what he’s doing. Please come back and enlighten us with your knowledge 🙃 I’ve watched every single one of your videos and have learned so much in just one week!!

By far and hands down the best tutorial I’ve seen since forever
When I checked your sub count vs. the views I was hopeful. When I reached the layer mixer for the skin tones I realised why. Having watched hundreds of hours on colour correction/grading and attaining a god damn MA in Film production, this video is where it finally clicked.
Outside of the official BMD grading tutorial, this has been the most helpful Resolve tutorial I have watched. Thank you!
I have been grading for several years now. I have similar techniques but I have to say that I very much like your approach to skin tones. I will definitely be taking on a few of your ideas. Great Job.
This trick of adjusting the skin highlights to match the room's light/colour LITERALLY changes everything, makes it look so natural :O
This is *THE BEST TUTORIAL* I have ever seen! Thanks a bunch.
These might be the best Resolve-tutorials I've seen so far on KZread. Can't wait to see more Shoot & Grade stuff, as well as tips like these! Thank you!

Dude, this is incredible. Not just a 'how to create a look' tutorial that doesn't necessarily transfer, but basically a detailed insight into the grading process from a workflow perspective. Stoked with this! Cheers for sharing!
The first minute of this video alone is worth a lot more than most! Subbed
This is an incredible tutorial. So clear, concise and in a really easy to follow format. Thanks for taking the time to make and share this tutorial and that final grade looks phenomenal!
I'VE WATCHED A LOT OF THESE VIDEOS AND THIS IS THE GREATEST COLOR GRADING VIDEO ON KZread!
Honestly Avery this is my favourite tutorial on Davinci resolve so far. Didn't understand high range/low range before but thank goodness I came across this video. Keep up the good work!
I learned more from this video than a month of resolve class at my uni... cheers mate.
This is the only video of yours I've watched - and this alone is worth a subscribe!

One of the best tutorials on color I've seen ever. I've watched this about a dozen times. Brilliant.
I for one would REALLY appreciate you demonstrating your expertise on subscribers’ problem footage. It’s alway educational to see how you handle 6k pro footage., but to invite subscribers to submit a ten second clip of Slog that they’re having trouble with, and see how YOU would approach it - solid gold.
Finally I got this! Before, I was color grading like a blind guy in a mine. I learned a lot here. Thank you for this very well made video. Great work, keep it up!
Holy... This man knows, what he's doing!
Absolutely love this. Such a concise tutorial. Looking forward to checking the rest of them out!!! Than you.
You have by far the best tutorials on youtube for color grading. I always just threw a lut on my log footage and fixed exposure to my liking. But you're teaching me what I'm doing wrong and the correct way to do it. Not only that, but you're teaching me how to think like a colorist as well. When you start learning the art of coloring footage it becomes quit a beautiful process. Before it was something I used to dread. You've entirely changed the way I view color grading for the better. No more creative luts for me. I'm going to control the image to my creative liking now. Thank you so much man. Your tutorials have ignited a knew passion and appreciation for coloring within me that I didn't know I had.
I took courses for color grading. Paid for em. This is far superior!!! thanks a million brother!!!

I like quality content like this, 💥
You have created the best DaVinci Resolve color grading tutorial EVER.amazing job my friend !!!
Been searching for a good Davinci tutorial specifically for skin tones and lighting that includes shape on the subject. Well done! That part where you turned up the R, G, and B Channels were amazing. I came from a retouching background in photoshop for many years so thats what has given me a color correcting/grading foundation. Good job! Will try this ASAP!
When you layered the skin tones back in with the grade I was like "whoah!" Great video, thank you! But next time, drop the music when the actual tutorial begins please :)

Best resolve tutorials on KZread! I keep coming back for more and saving your videos to a playlist for my friends to watch. Keep it up!
Just out of curiosity, why is it that you add saturation back into the image using the RGB Mixer as opposed to just turning up the saturation?
Anyone else not like the look of color grades, and just like it when the image is color balanced naturally?
@MattFaris
4 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean. Really depends on what you are trying to achieve I guess. Just think that something like this teal look gives you another dimension to your storytelling. Just enables you to add that different context to the world you are creating through film. Sometimes though, something that is just balanced does the job.
I have learned ao much with this amazing tutorial, thank God for people like this guy who wants to share his huge knowledge with us !!!
This is the best made resolve tutorial that i ever seen until now. Thank you so much.
Nice tutorial! Because of your videos I just downloaded davinci resolve :D Where did you learn this stuff? :P

Malte Thanks man! I'm self taught; started learning film about 7-8 years ago. Most of the learning process was slowly gaining knowledge online and trying to replicate other artists to learn their strategies. Personally, I think it's one of the fastest ways to learn, since it forces you to problem solve. Most of learning Resolve is developing your visual and creative skills; the technical stuff will come naturally along the way!
@malte5982

Thanks! Ok, I am learning online for one year now :-) Do you have any tips? From which artists do I learn the most?
@averypeck
6 жыл бұрын
Pick any artist you like really; each artist offers their own style, and along with that comes a workflow to create that style. Fincher is one of my favorites personally. The ultimate goal is to take what's in your head, and know how to put that on the screen. So if there's someone already out there creating imagery that speaks to you, do everything you can to figure out how they create it. Behind the scenes footage, interviews, stills from their films (you can head over to filmgrab . com), etc. You'll start to uncover new techniques, and soon you'll have a "database" of workflows that match up with a database of images in your head. I'd encourage you to pick a single still frame that you like, and recreate as closely as possible. Notice the direction and quality of the lighting, the color grading, the wardrobe and set design, the position and angle of the camera, framing, lens choices, etc. Because eventually, when a writer or client hands you a script and asks "What are you thinking of for this?", now you'll be prepared. Hope that helps!

Thanks a lot mate! Till now I am not that much into movies but more into event- or musicvideos. One of my favorite artists is Sam Kolder, I love his style. I already tried to lern his techniques and tried to create my own style. Maybe tomorrow I will try to recreate one of his shots in detail :-) Thank you for this detailed answer!😃👍

You're a great speaker, a talented colourist and you share some excellent tips here! Thank you :) If I could however, offer some constructive criticism, it would be...when you create a tutorial, it should be just that...rather than a demonstration. What I mean is, when you do something, it's better for a student to know WHY you're doing it. That way, we as students can actually learn to make decisions for ourselves because you have shared with us the reasons behind your steps. For example, WHY do you use the RGB mixer to adjust saturation instead of the saturation slider? WHY did you de-saturate the image before adding contrast? WHY did you un-gang the curves, adding contrast only to the luma channel? When you refine the key by hand, what did you actually do and why did you do? I hate to sound negative, because your video has a lot going for it, but personally I sit here after 3 minutes and I don't feel empowered or more knowledgeable, I'm just wowed and mostly see you demonstrating that you're a great colourist :)

Hi Matthew! Thank you, and I appreciate your feedback! I plan on covering many of the things you've listed in future videos; the only reason I chose not to here is because I wanted to keep the video focused on just the skin tone methods/theory. But look out for other episodes covering the color correction process in more detail!

I actually beg to differ. As a semi experienced colorist I find the explanations of why something is done tiresome and I usually just skip through them. I really appreciate that Avery's tutorials gets straight to the point as opposed to all other tutorials on youtube.

DesDrukStiv So are you saying you're happy to learn a technique and use it, even though you have no idea why you're using that technique? Or are you just saying that you enjoy a short, to the point tutorial? The difference in my mind would be "now let's use the RGB mixer to increase saturation instead of the usual saturation slider BECAUSE ..."
@m1nt9reen
6 жыл бұрын
@Matthew Scott just an FYI, saturating an image using the RGB mixer as he did is mathematically identical to using the standard saturation control I.e there’s absolutely no point in doing it
This is actually one of the best Davinci tutorial I've ever seen, Thanks Man
Your videos are so helpful and crystal clear to understand. Not only the workflow you’re using but also the technical aspects and the reasons why you grade the way you do. Great job! Keep up with it :)

Avery, THANK YOU. Another fantastic tutorial!! Honestly, there are no other tutorials like this at such a professional level. And if you ever create a masterclass, count me in!
Best color grade channel for resolve. Learning so much. Thank you
This tutorial was so incredible. Thanks you a lot for your work on it!
Avery just viewed your tutorial as I'm preparing to go back into film-making after a 15 year hiatus. I used to sit in very expensive grading suites and watch as these magicians plied their trade and marvel at the in-depth knowledge they possessed to get to the fantastic grades we came to expect and even take for granted. It really is an art and you have done a brilliant job of laying it out here in a simple, easy to follow format that is relaxed and packed with useful information. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this inspiring and awesome tutorial. 👍
I have been waiting for a decent skin tone tutorial and this is it!
I don't comment all to often, but I have to say that this is one of the most comprehensive and intuitive guides to skin tones and colorgrading in Resolve in general. Big thanks for your work!
On point, Avery! On point! A tutorial that makes me want to learn color grade to its depth and realize the potential of knowing the software. By far the best I have come across. Subscribed.
