    Well I'll be damned. I am Greek and have been working with leather for years, and it never crossed my mind that Tragacanth is actually a Greek word. And it is indeed, and it took a very smart English lady to explain it to me. Good on you Lois, I am impressed.

    Τραγάκανθος = Male goat + thorn. A thorny bush, from which they used to extract Lanolin. Lanolin is also an oil that goat wool and skin has. That's why the goat part of the word appears.

    I watch Tony See over at DieselPunkRO a lot and he once used Nivia hand cream to slick his edges. So I got one and tried it. Works pretty good, is not to expensive, and can be bought at any Big Box Store. I figured if I didn't like it at lease my wife would use it, so it was a no lose situation.

    Hi. Those are some great tips and tix. Do you think Gum arabicum would work for edge finishing? That is the binder for aquarelle paints. Maybe mnix it with some bees wax or linseed oil?

    Curious how you made the stitching holes? Did you drill them in? If so, what size bit did you use? Thanks! : )

  • @BenOrford

    @BenOrford

    I use an awl - it's a tool that pierces the hole, it's a diamond shape in profile. It parts the fibres rather than removing them like a drill would. :)

    Is the knife you are using at 0:50 a wood carving knife? I have usually used a Swan Morton for my detailed cutting but I find the blades dull quickly and are not that easy to resharpen, I thought I might try a wood carving detail knife

    Really enjoy the videos by yourself and Ben. Curious to know what it was in the drill when you were slicking the edges it looked like a bar with something wrapped around it?

  • @BenOrford

    @BenOrford

    Exactly right - it's just a bar with some canvas wrapped around it, which makes a great buffer :)

    Nice vid, but it would be better to stitch first and lock the leather in place before sanding. If you do it afterwards the leather will move while you sand, and swell when you stitch!
