Simple watercolour portrait painting for beginners

Ойын-сауық

Lots of people want to paint portraits, but they have the reputation of being challenging. People want their portrait to look just like them and being nearly there isn't going to cut it.
This exercise is designed to help you see the face as a series of shapes. Once you can train yourself to see something as say a triangle rather than a nose, you will find it far easier to paint. The bossy left side of the brain over rules our creative right side and gets us to rely on our knowledge rather than the reality in front of our eyes.
It is also designed to help you realise that tone (the light or dark of a colour) is far more important than the actual hue. You and I know full well that this guy is not green, yellow and brow but because the light and dark is in the right place we still recognise him.
I did another portrait in this style of a young girl here: • Overcome your fear of ...
The reference photo is on the community tab of this channel. It came from www.pixabay.com. This kind of high contrast photography and lighting is called 'Rembrandt lighting', I believe. So that might help if you are looking for your own reference photos.
I'm a big believer in shortcuts, so for this tutorial we will use a light box, tracing or even a window to transfer our outline and contours.
If you are looking for more in depth watercolour courses, from beginners through to advanced, then please take a look at www.lizchadertonstudio.co.uk. I am writing a book on watercolour portraits which will be published by The Crowood Press in 2023.
If you are looking for a friendly place to share your art and meet watercolourists from around the world, why not join my Facebook group here: groups/watercolourstudiowithlizchadertonIf you have enjoyed this film, please consider liking and subscribing. I do a watercolour tip, trick or technique each week and release it at 2pm on Sunday. So if you hit the notification bell you will be emailed when the next one is out.

Big greatings, milady ! You did this already with an other image some time ago. I watched that vid too, and I liked it, like I like this, too. These suggestions are very useful ! I use soft pastels to transfer an image. Hues like mauve, sky blue or turquoise. The backside oft the paper will get some dust, but usually I blow the dust away so that it doesn´t spoil the transferred image. With this way you can use inverted colours for the contouring. If you like to do so. -->More greatings !

I notice you used quite a small brush - even for the background - would a larger mop be useful for filling in more quickly?

You are so right! The problem is I’m filming myself, talking away, trying to make it look okay so I sometimes forget to take my own advice and use a bigger brush!
