Simple Machines: The Wheel & Axle

The invention of the wheel and axle has allowed humans to do some amazing things. Watch as Jared explains how humans created the wheel, how the wheel and axle work together, and finally how much the wheel can help to move heavy objects!

    Great video! I love the explanation, as well as the use of easy to source materials. The use of the spring scale is also an excellent way of bringing math experiments into this without the need for the higher level math of wheels and axles. I would add, though, that school-aged kids are capable of using sharp knives / xActo knives, etc. The kids in our elementary school do this regularly. They don't just magically reach an age that they can automatically do it; it's a learned skill. Of course, they need to be shown how to do it and given safety instructions to set them up for success.

    I love your videos. I am currently helping a group of middle school students prepare for the Machines event in our upcoming Science Olympiad competitions. I have assigned your videos on the various simple machines to introduce the important ideas for each of the machines. The only disappointment I have found is that your video on wheel and axle doesn't take up the idea of ideal mechanical advantage (IMA). If you would add a section where you lift a weight, similar to a set up that might be used for drawing water from a well with a bucket, you could show how the ratio of the circumference (or radius) of the wheel containing the handle to the circumference (or radius) of the axle where the rope is wound as the bucket is lifted is equal to the IMA. Great job!

    If axle rotate along with wheel how does axle hold vehicle body still or why doesn't vehicle rotate along with axle and wheel?

  • @zeemarkinnovator4643

    @zeemarkinnovator4643

    Жыл бұрын

    the axle does not rotate with the wheel. the wheel rotates around the axel , while the axel remains stable and supports the weight of the load. the straw inserted into the center hole of the wheel acts as a load bearing for the axel. think of the straw as a circular ring with ball bearings that surround the axel. the straw rotates with the wheel, while supporting the axle but allowing the axle to remain stationary.
