Simple Ken Podcast | EP 35 Emotional Investment Feat. Kumar Varun, Rohan Desai & Shreemayee Das

Комедия

It brings me great pleasure to welcome you into my most hardcore-comedy-friendship group. The conversations I have with Rohan, Shreemayee (Weepli) and Kumar could be too intense for the novice comedy viewer. As four comics who enjoy sarcasm, self aware gossip and over the top generalisations, I couldn't hold my excitement for this one. We talk about how we deal with the over load of information we receive on a daily basis, the misuse of "emotional investment" and get into a classic Kumar Varun rant at the end about artist and social media.

Kenny, I Mary Joy want to thank you for helping me come out to some extent, when I lost my husband Joy last year to corona in April. It was my son Stephen who introduced your stand up shows, I m sure I smiled after ages. God bless you n Tracy. We were really isolated inspite of having relatives who couldn't visit us. Thanks.

It always feels good to see an episode of Simple Ken. It's interesting to hear your or your guest’s point of view on certain aspects of life. Sorry, I don’t have the courage to write a question (I’m just starting to leave comments, I should have done that a long time ago !). I’ll think of an interesting question to ask you one day. Thank you for this new episode :)

Kenn, you're such a blessing man. The phase I'm going through in life right now is kinda unexplainable. On one hand, I am trying to navigate through a broken relationship, and on the other hand, I am discovering new insights about myself every day, going deeper, and in that process, finding much more clarity than I have ever had for my future. My day starts with re-watching a simple Ken episode, and it sets the perspective for the day. It's like opening a random page of your favourite book, and finding the answer that you needed the most. Just like you'd love to pay 1 crore to watch John Mayer speak for an hour, I would do it for you. You're the elder brother we all want in our lives. If you're reading this, just know you're impacting lots of lives like me. And although I have lots of questions that I could ask here, I believe I'll find the answers re-watching your previous talks. Thanks for existing! ✨

#simpleken , Hi Kenny, I am Arul 26yrs old. I have been watching you since i was 18 years of age. Thank you for still inspiring me. Journey with u started with "2 gravies". I was always know to be as a "funny guy" in the group from my school days to 9 - 5 job. It even made me take pressure on myself to be funny when i meet new grp of people. Which i think pshychologicaly i was expecting validation from every people i meet. But on the other hand standup actually grew on me, started loving the after feel a gud stand up video gives and it became my rabbit hole and i wanted to do something like tat as well. I tried my first open mic recently and i bombed so bad. And it broke me since i managed to be funny in all these stages of my life with all the different grup of ppl i met but this experience shook me. I sincerely in the place right now to stop trying comedy anymore. It started a severe self doubt on myself since being funny was my identity i ever know. I couldnt comprehend this expereince maturely. Is bombing a normal thing to happen? Would you suggest to try openmics again or its stage comic completely a diffrent ball game rather than just being funny with your friends. My intention was never numbers or tickets or even a show (if i get one in the future*) i just wanted to give that rabbit hole experience to the people that listens to me. Thanks you for patiently reading it thru. Love you Kenney and whoever gonna be on this episode of your long recording. Stay safe.

I think I get Rohan's perspective. It's like, you are focused on specific things that you want to improve upon, and anything other than that doesn't matter. And that's a good thing also, I mean there are soooo many things out there, and if you are distributing your attention to everything, the end result wouldn't be effective. It's like having a purpose. For example, this pseudo-wise comment I made here just to get a reply. 😇

Hey Kenny, this episode helped me a lot, I have been consuming a lot of content that talks about good habits like working out, journaling, self help books etc, like most people on social media lately. I want to adopt some of these habits but I also find myself questioning whether these things are just part of hustle culture and won’t really make my life any better, because more often than not I feel like I’m unable to meet the standards of these people and end up shitting on myself even more. WITHOUT GIVING ADVICE because I know you can’t, what’s your take on these “good habits” that people talk about, does it actually help or is it just Instagram envy and consumerism at its finest. Love your show #simpleken

Hi, I'm not Kenny but I've spent a considerable amount of time thinking about the "good habits" that you mention and it has led me to a question that helps me pick which habits are good for me: what goal/intention is the said habit serving? Do I want to work out because I want a stronger, more agile body or is it because everyone else is doing it? Do I want to journal to put it out on the internet as content (which is not usually my goal) or I just want a space to organise my day/week? And the self-help books: read something from the author (most of them have blogs) and then decide whether you'll benefit from it. The thing that helps me fight hustle culture is the question of whatever it is I am doing is it out of peer pressure or becoming a part of the rat race or am I doing it because I actually find it nourishing and joyful or it would lead me to fulfillment. So yes, most of these things come from ideas that make life more fulfilling but they can be done without bowing to consumerism: for instance I don't need a ton of stationery to journal, max two pens and a notebook without the effort of making it look like a masterpiece because that is not what I'm aiming for eventually. Hope this helps you find answers you're seeking

Kenny, please never stop these amazing videos. It's Diwali and I am outside of my home city, away from friends and family and these conversations just help one feel connected and less alone in a weird way. Virtual and one sided and yet we (all your audience) feel so heard and seen, especially due to the format of taking questions from audience which are so relatable. Here's mine if it catches your interest: I don't think I am taking to aging very well. I turned 31 this year and although I joke about it, I keep missing my younger days and wonder if the best of life is behind me. This is scary because you also recall shots you should have taken or things you could have done differently. Do you feel good about growing up, and if so what about this passage of time makes you feel excited? :p Lots of love to you and all your amazing friends and peers ❤️ #SimpleKen

#simpleken hey Kenny! Love the long recording so much, it connects on a personal level to me. So while listening to KV about spinning everything into something positive even if it’s something very small and trivial because “joy of little things” and all :p. But another thing that was relatable was that he mentioned it gets to a point where it starts getting annoying to people around you. It has a name and its called “toxic positivity”. Where do we draw the line? I believe it will differ person to person but this is something I am saying every other day nowadays to conclude something 😅 kudos and keep going! We love you!

Hey? so I'm a teenager that watches simple ken so you know my question is going to be existential. Does it ever bother you how the internet might see you as a past version of yourself? Because you've been putting out content for a long time and people are discovering some of it now. And because of that do you think people sometimes expect you to do certain things because of what you've already done? And lastly do you only hate slam poetry or just poetry in general? Btw I'm a huge fan can't wait for the next episode or whatever you do next. #simpleken

I still can't believe Shreemayee was my Tinder match. And we've had so many great conversations together. I remember her telling me how shw was falling in love with Bombay when she had just moved and she's going to explore stand-up comedy. Funny part is, I once went to an open mic and bumped into her. Her set was about her experience with Tinder. Won't lie, but I found my influence on some of her characters amd my friends laughed at those character traits too.

#simpleken Hi Kenny! I've been following your work since about 2016 and I've been a huge fan ever since!! Love these long recordings so much :) I've been in quite a weird place lately where i don't find myself motivated to do anything at all, I know exactly what I need to do to achieve all the things I want and I also have a rough idea of how long too. but, I just can't seem to bring myself to start at all. I guess i just wanted to know if you or anyone you've come across has felt this way? and if yes, how did you/they deal with it and how did you/they overcome it? and if no, what do you think about it? I know the question seems very vague, but it's because it has to do many multiple lifestyle changes together and it maybe seems too overwhelming, but i just wanted to get someone else's opinion and what better place to do that than on the internet right? :3

Hello Ken, this podcast was really insightful, especially KV's words. I had a bestfriend, my whole world revolved around her, and she got a bf and now suddenly I am not the most important person in her life. I later realised that I was never the most important person and I hated a lot of things about her but I still miss her a lot probably because I have no one to share things with. I am not good looking so it doesn't make sense to ask you this but how do you make friends with others especially the opposite gender.

#simpleken Hi Kenny! Love listening to Simple Ken while I'm doing other chores. I'm 26 years old. Recently, I've been feeling like everyone around me speaks at a very surface level. There's no depth to what they talk about, which makes me not want to engage in conversations. Has this ever happened with you, where you've felt like, people need to evolve a lot more- wither by reading or living more experiences in life?

Hey Kenny .. I am not on social media.. don't know even if you read this or not.. But I had to share this.. I don't know...why.. it doesn't even make any sense.. You're coming to Kolkata on 27th Nov,which is in itself a dream come true for me cause you rarely come to Kolkata ..I was so so eagerly waiting for this. Unfortunately the same day CAT exam is happening.. and I've already give it last year got a decent percentile.. so it's important too.. Today admit came & my exam center is way too far from the auditorium.. also with an evening show. I don't even know if I can make it on time.. I'm sure students who are giving the exam as well as waiting for attending your show can understand how I feel right know.. though may be there are very few people with this much bad luck. I know it'll be my biggest regret if I can't see you even when you're in my city .. Really don't know what to do. I wish it happens some other day or other time. I don't even know if there will be a next time..next chance. I'm not some crazy random fan.. I really admire you & following you since 7-8 years. This was like a golden opportunity for me. Well.. for sure everyone on the show will have a blast to see you.. I'll regret it a lot if I won't be able to make it Lots of love ❤️❤️❤️❤️ from kolkata

Sorry to comment but Rohan Desai is so confused and narcissistic at the same time, it get super hilarious to listen to him. But it was great listening to all four of you :)

Kenny, can you take up my question the next time you are having stand up comedians? I have little insights through a podcast about the writing process of vipul goyal. How does discipline play a role in the writing process; or do the jokes suddenly occur to you and you compile them; or both?

Hey Kenneth! Not really a question, but one of my "close friends" is Malayali, and well--I'm not. Are there any phrases I can just casually drop in a conversation--just to flip her out, or maybe impress her :P #simpleken

Not trying to ruin the vibe or something but these stuff discussed in this podcast like being obligated to something because you're in a relationship or thinking of it as duty are all discussed in Mahabharath which is sooooo frikkin old. They've even beautifully explained different solutions on how you can get out of it without feeling guilty!
