Simple Human Sensor Can

Ғылым және технология

Simplehuman's voice-controlled trash bin is definitely smart, but its $179 price tag might scare some away.

I have had several sensor cans and always receive comments on how cool they are. Its like when I bought my Range Rover, everybody who cant afford one told me what I should do. I would suggest you keep your comments about foot pedals to yourself and let people make up their own minds. Im going to buy this one right now since ya'll care so much.

Foot pedals always seem to need way too much force from the toes in order to work, or the mechanism will wear out/break after a few months (in such a way that I can't fix it). Foot pedals are simply not the ultimate solution for the action of throwing stuff away. The next step is to get the bag out and tied easily, without having anything from inside the bag touch anything else.

I'd rather spend $30 for a step garbage can than pay $180 to stand in my kitchen and yell at a garbage can when the motor inevitably fails after a year.

I guess that's cool but why not just get a step trash can? Good on them for trying to innovate, I guess. There are so many voice-operated things nowadays I feel like a trash can is one of the last things I need with that capability.

From what I can see not very, problematic parts are mostly mechanical, like making that slow closing mechanisam, and actually bin that passes exactly to another bin, with all the features like what this have, all the electronics can be made for cheap. You need 2 distance sensors, servo motor, adrunio yuno and thats it =), with yuno you could use third sensor to monitor how much trash you have and then email yourself reminder

What scare's me more is that Simplehuman does not give any support (even no spare parts) on its products when the warranty of 2 (!) years has been passed. A new motor for a 5 years old bon is not available anymore. The can can be thrown away when it fails. Good for Simplehuman, you have to buy a new one. Bad for you and the planet.

i 179$ for a fancy place to put my garbage all over it? yeah sure... why spend more than 20$ on a trash can with a foot pedal to solve the exact same problem? or if you feel "high tech" you can save 100$ and just get the Xiaomi smart trash can that would also literally seal close your smelly trash bags and automatically refill a new trash bag for you instead... (saving you having to deal with tying up an overfilled smelly drippy trash bag) (and yeah, it costs 70$US)
