Simple Gears Explained | Calculate Gear Ratio, Torque & Angular Speed

Learn how to calculate the gear ratio for a simple set of spur gears. Gears share tangential quantities, which allows them to effectively convert torque into rotation while conserving energy. There is a line of action between gears where the gear teeth mesh. Along the line of action the gears have the same tangential velocity and the action and reaction force between the gear teeth is the same.
The derivation of gear ratio and mechanical advantage ignores frictional losses but covers material commonly found in introductory physics, engineering and courses such as Project Lead the Way Principles of Engineering. PLTW POE

Before you ask... The gear sketch is 20 minutes compressed to 12 seconds.

Can you recommend some materials how to sketch the gears like you did please?

Very nice and clear VDO, I can have my engineering student watch your gear playlist :) . Love seeing your sketch! Super nice!!!! Thank you for sharing great vdo.

3:00 because you have only one point of contact you can draw an infinite number of lines. So the "line of action" has infinite orientations. You need at least 2 points to draw a line.

to define a line you need two points OR a point and a direction. (at the risk of oversimplifying) in the case of an ideal gear the line of action is normal to the gear teeth.

@@INTEGRALPHYSICS Ok, but the tooth ar rounded and at 2:40 where you put the points of contact on each gear you can see that if you draw a line between those points it results in a slightly incline line.

Nice. But what I don't understand about gear and torque is, when a car is explained that it has torque and power at certain RPM. Torque is gained at certain RPM so does its power (mostly in horse power). The engine power is gain at certain RPM, of course, it is clear. But how does torque is related to RPM? From your explanation, it is clear that torque is not related to RPM, but work it is.

The Torque vs Power argument with respect to cars always drives me a bit crazy. Power is proportional to Torque x rpm. So as rpm increase so does the power. And heres the main idea. It is power not torque that dictates the rate of change in velocity (ie acceleration) I keep meaning to do a video on that one. Hopefully soon.

if newtons law is applied here then why is the output Force the same direction as the input force, shouldn't it be in the opposing direction according to the law?

We look first at the force BY the input gear, then the force ON the output gear. They are in face the same force, not an action reaction pair.
