Simple Foundation Design for Beginners - Structural Engineering

In this video I go run through simple foundation designs that will be suitable for beginners or fresh graduates.
I'll start with explaining allowable bearing pressures and where you find it in a site investigation report then I move onto a strip and pad foundation design.
0:00 Intro
0:18 Site investigation report/bearing pressures
1:40 Strip foundation example
3:44 Pad foundation example
6:30 Outro
The strip foundation design follows on from the load takedown example found here: • How to Calculate Build...
I am using the Concepts App for my sketching so check out my videos on the Concepts App here:

    Another Excellent tutorial Daz. As in all things Structural...maybe some typical design issues on a housing project? That way, you get to cover quite a variety of elements, that can be applied no matter the size of the project? Some things i'd (personally) like to see you post videos on (not sure if others would agree) ✅ Pile foundation? Working out the axial distribution over piles - which dictates your pile cap selection ✅ 1 way span slab is simple enough for a video which will def have value. ✅ Something thats always a good thing to know, is designing RC plinths. Sometimes its cheaper to to construct a plinth or, for phasing requirements for other subcontractors, but the ability to design RC plinths even a post fix solution, is something everyone should have in the locker. It gets the ground workers out of SO MUCH TROUBLE. ✅ Column design (RC or Steel) maybe include some of the SCI guidance for preliminary column sizes based on number of storey's (at scheme design stage) ✅ Composite design was always a long calculation, when working out stud requirements. ✅ Maybe some quick fore rule of thumbs you've developed over the years which take up no more than half an A4 which have served you well over the years? Finally: ✅Slightly different one, but REALLY important - which im trying to get into the nitty gritty of it myself, the IStructE Plan of works 2020, which is based on the RIBA version. On the IStructE website, they have both the pdf matrix, and an excel sheet of all the responsibilities and what should be delivered as part of a structural engineers package. Every Grad or under grad for that matter, needs to know of these documents. The stuff im spit balling is basically the stuff i had to find out for myself, but we have a duty to pass this info on (under the code of conduct). Look forward to your next one. If you need 2D details or 3D details to help illustrate,, let me know - im more than happy to ping them over, or put something together. Keep up the good work mate.

    Excellent videos Dazz, I have enjoyed watching them all. One suggestion I would make is as follows: While I know this video and other design videos have beginner in their title and are meant for beginners, it may be useful to list/mention some of the additional items/analysis/loads that would need to be considered. (i.e moment/eccentricity) Looking forward to more!

    Great video. I have seen a building which has load bearing masonry walls, and also concrete columns. (sometimes the columns are between the walls) As a result, one has in the foundation a system of pad foundations next or between strip foundations. Could you please make an example about it? I'm interested in the distribution of the load on the foundations because I am not sure how much load would go to the pad and strip foundation, considering that they are just next to each other. Is there an interaction between them that one should consider (stiffness of the elements, additional load on the strip foundations because of being next to the columns)? I hope you find the time. And thank you again for the videos, they are amazing :)

    I would really like a worked example of how you get from line loads to the column loads that would act on pile or screw type foundations. I am particularly interested in helical screw type foundation and would like to learn how to figure out screw spacing when I know the load capacity of the screw (as tested on site), depending on cross sectional area of timber beams spanning the screws.

    Hi mate, how would you work out the thickness of the concrete strip foundation, as the width you said was load÷by bearing capacity of the soil? Thanks

  • @EverydayDazz

    @EverydayDazz

    2 жыл бұрын

    For a 45 degree spread. You want the depth of foundation half the width. So if you calculated a strip needed to be 800mm wide. For it to work you need a minimum depth of 400mm.

    @@EverydayDazz Thanks for the reply, makes sense. Could I ask once the total load is applied to the foundation 141.9kn should a FOS be applied? Thanks

  • @EverydayDazz

    @EverydayDazz

    2 жыл бұрын

    When you are checking against an allowable bear pressure provided by a geotechnical engineer report that should already have a factor of safety so the loads applied should be unfactored. If you are checking against ultimate bearing pressure then you will want to use factored loads because ultimate bearing pressure does not have a factor of safety.

    @@EverydayDazz Great, thank you for spending the time to reply👍 What's the best practice on small projects like extensions we're the soil bearing pressure is unknown? Thanks

  • @EverydayDazz

    @EverydayDazz

    2 жыл бұрын

    Try and find out what the soil is, clay/sand etc by going to site and then use a low bearing pressure. As long as it’s not something like peat then 50-75kpa is fairly reasonable. You can also look at geological maps to see what the soil types are and if any logs near the area where done.
