Howdy

This was a very nice idea Daniel I was surprised how far that bar went into the ground. I do have some soggy ground problems in my backyard where I did my renovation. When I renovated I brought in a mixture of compost and sand to help level and seed. The problem with my yard is that if you dig down 12 to 16" it is like concrete Gray clay glacial silt. Winter rains if they are strong and heavy will raise the water table sometimes I have an inch of water on that grass And walking on the grass is a no go because you will sink in. I put about an inch to an inch and a 1/2 of sand and compost and leveled and and I could walk on it without sinking in and the grass did not drown. I think I need some proper drainage maybe some step catch basins But the water seemed to drain off the top layers. I guess I will see if this backfires when it gets warmer but for now everything looks good did my 1st mow and put some diamonds down.

This is great stuff , I studied which areas of the lawn had standing water when we had the worst downpours and I treated those areas just like this. Job done!

My goodness we always use a digging iron to dig. Oftentimes will have two digging irons between one or two people even one person so it's interesting that you have to justify the cost by thinking about future tile work or something. The soil must be a lot different where you're at thanks for the video man

Just a suggestion, couldnt you use a big funnel into the hole and help fill in and minimise spillage .

Grat video really helpful

Should a scarifier or power rake avoid areas with those sort of rubber plugs as I'm guessing they'd feel quite solid?

No you will be fine scarifying or power taking compared to compacted soil it's soft.

During the summer my lawn looks ‘fine’ but during the winter and after rain showers it gets very spongy ( there’s no moss). I bought an auger bit and began the process to try and fix the constant drainage problem of my small (30m squared) lawn, it wasn’t long before I was hitting something solid which turned out to be an old paving slab, I then unearthed a further 9. There appears to be a layer of dolomite throughout with a few inches of poor top soil which is of a clayish texture and full of stones. In some areas the dolomite is sitting on top of a layer of polythene covering the clay soil beneath. Additionally after a few hours the holes I’ve dug become waterlogged. Should I just bite the bullet and get all the dolomite removed, get a French drain installed and a few tons of quality top soil or can the dolomite be left and just remove the top soil replacing it with better?

I had a similar situation and bit the bullet and removed all the slabs, rocks, and glass the builders used to build up by back lawn. Hard work pays off eventually.

Gosh what a great idea, Well done Daniel. Recycle a car tyre everyone wins.

It's so cool too! They found out how to make crushed rock that mimics poison rubber!! It's just crushed larger rocks?!!! Such an amazing invention. Hopefully this innovation will help you install better drains in the future! You must be so excited for this groundbreaking discovery.

I've always done this job with grit and a little top-dressing over the top. Not sure about the idea of putting rubber into a lawn from an environmental perspective. Is it biodegradable?

Good idea. Would probably use small stones to fill the holes with a bit of top soil on top. That tire stuff isn't a good idea me thinks.

I have 5 acres of flatland (everything is flat where I live in AR) but about 1.5 of the acres hold almost all winter and spring. The spot has to be dry for at least 5-7 days before you can even think about mowing it. It’s a total pain in the ass. It’s to the point where I wanna kill all the grass in that area to avoid having to mow it. It’s usually over a foot tall before you can mow it. If I had several thousands to spare, I’d hire someone to come handle it but I don’t even know what to do about it. Some people have suggested French drains

@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert 1. Why is paving sand no good? 2. Have a look at google images of scoria- they are small 0.25-1cm diameter pyroclastic, highly vesicular, dark-colored volcanic rock

Probably best to stick with sand, from an environmental perspective and leave rubber for surface play areas or paths

Crumbled rubber is now being removed from children’s play areas due to its carcinogenic properties. We all need to educate ourselves about the dangers of how we “recycle” dangerous substances such as car tyres. I agree with your comment about sand or maybe grit for drainage. Environmental / sustainable options are never easy to source for gardeners who are seen as advocates for working with the natural environments by many. Solutions within a circular system where products are not brought in from outside the system are often best and teach us to work with what we have, without having to tap into or rely on resources outside the eco system of the gardens we manage as professional gardeners.

@@wayneessar7489 It gets into the water courses, what happens if the next owner wants to grow carrots there? N-1,3-dimethylbutyl-N′-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine and coriander please. The stuff to use is biochar. Car tyres are an absolute nightmare, every mile you drive you are chucking phthalates, sulfenamides, guanidines, thiazoles, thiuams, dithiocarbamates, sulfur donors, phenolics, phenylenediamines and heavy metals in to the water table.

@@wayneessar7489 no, it gets in the water, which ultimately affects a bigger area, soil microbes can do lots of things but can't do anything with inorganic compounds.

Only ask because I’ve seen warning not to do so. It is abundantly clear from the scientific literature that rubber should not be used as a landscape amendment or mulch. There is no question that toxic substances leach from rubber as it degrades, contaminating the soil, landscape plants, and associated aquatic systems.

All sounds a bit wishy washy, and what about when they send tyres to land fill if they are not recycled ? eu tyres do not contain the dangerous chemicals usa tyres do and its been ratified as safe hence the reason its not banned

Why not try a funnel to be more accurate to fill the holes? Yes, I agree to use sand. Great idea to help drainage.👍🏻

@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert thanks, my grass is no more as it's become a soaked water muddy pit. my garden is situated at a lower elevation then my property and sewage line. I have 2 issues. First one being I have a large concrete base where by I want to put some aco drains in so when I wash any dog muck it doesn't just fall off the edge, it has somewhere to go. I'd love for the aco drains to be connected to the main sewage line but being as it's at a much higher elevation I think I'd need a pump of sorts. Now the other solution I was thinking was perhaps bore a large hole in to the ground to act like a soakaway. Not sure on the long impact or dispersion rate would be for that. 2. Issue is the muddy pit. Now this used to drain very well until over the years of impact of large tree debris possibly compacted the ground but I still managed to have some decent grass. It mainly got churned up by my dog from running in wet grass. So now when it rains it's just muddy mush. I did see the other video where you used the large drilling machine. Would you say that would possibly be the solution to solving the issue? I'm also contemplating artificial grass for the future but from what others have told me with their experience when it rains it doesn't drain away quick enough so that can become flooded. Thanks for reading and sorry for the long comment

Great advice and videos Daniel. Not sure about this one though as the environmental damage of putting rubber into lawns doesn’t sit right. Will take 1000 years or so to degrade and will cause damage to the bio chemistry of lawn and bacteria. Surely there are natural products that will be just effective? First thumbs down mate in a few years. However keep the great videos coming.

Its personal choice, eu tyres dont have the same harmful chemicals that usa tyres have to its safe to use, we spray weedkillers fungicides and whole host of other nasty things on grass, which are far worse than rubber crumb which by the way is used by the boat load on 3-4g pitches which our children play on,

@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert I don't spray weedkillers, fungicides and a whole lot of other nasty things on grass (or any other part of my gardens). As responsible gardeners we all need to learn to work with trying to understand how plants interact with the soil biology and do what we can to assist and adjust the balance needed for the results we require. I know, this is much more difficult and a long term project (no quick-fix's I'm afraid) but I believe its the least culpable approach. I know we all have different approaches. Your instructional videos are great and down to earth, but on this topic I feel you may have done the gardening world (and in a small way, the environment) a dis-service. Customer pressures from your clients, I know, must be a top consideration, but as we all move forward in a rapidly changing world you and all gardeners are in an enviable position to educate and change peoples maintenance practices to fall in line with protecting their small precious patches. Good luck with moving this topic forward. I look forward to viewing your future videos.

Yes, Ive seen greenskeepers put holes like this on the entire green when I was playing golf during the fall. They told me they were aerating the greens.

I was thinking the same thing. They jump all over everything. Keep doing what your doing mate. Helping so many with their lawns daily, there's always 1 as they say or in this case a few ha ha. . Ill be ordering some of your products soon, its been so wet of late I've not touched the lawn. Will be scarifying when it dries up, Top dressing with field no.4 and overseeding and then applying the first spring treatment. What would you recommend ?

Putting a petroleum product in your surface water or drainage water or groundwater might be against federal law in America I haven't checked and have no reason to say that but any petroleum product in the ground is going to be frowned upon by the environmental agencies for sure I would think I'm just guessing does anybody know about that?

There was no explanation on how this helps drainage. I watched the entire video hoping you would tell me what this actually does to help yard drainage but nothing; not even a hint of how this works. 🤷🏼‍♀

@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert yeah i still dont think is a good idea, is perhaps help s the case of drainage, but is not a good idea to mix rubber with soil, i know now we have synthetic lawn, synthetic fields, race tracks made of rubber, but i dont think following that path is the right way.

Hopefully people see this. DONT DO THIS! Lol wow. One he’s compacting the soil with the bar not pulling and dirt out. Long drill bit or aerate is what you would want to do. And do sand. Idk why you would put rubber in the ground.

Exactly. Plus if you ever do a heavy scarification on this area, you'll have rubber chips everywhere.

Micro rubber in your lawn - are you mad? Hardly an environmentally sound solution! Use sharp sand.
