I'm currently working for a degree in animation & motion graphics. I'm taking a digital photography course this term and I have been watching your videos instead of the lectures provided by my professor to learn techniques. You have such a warm and approachable presentation in all of your videos and they are so engaging and easy to follow! You are a natural teacher and I am so grateful to have found this channel. Keep up the excellent work!

Usually, I see this type of video, and it is either ridiculously difficult or overly simplistic. This clip taught me something valuable. Simple without being simplistic. Thank you for the most instructive three minutes and fifty seconds ever! Highlt recommended!

This channel is awesome. I'm in the middle of retouching an image and needed to get some quick information about dodge & burn. Here it is quick, thorough, and perfect. Thank you Phlearn.

phlearn teaches the way I wish my instructors taught when I was in graphic design and web design back in the day. I'm getting back into photoshop after a long stint errr, it has been a while. I do think that all the tutorials should be grouped but none the less these are fantastic and the teaching style is the best I've come across. God Bless

Thanks for this. I haven't thought about using Apply Image on a mask like that before. I think I would have defaulted to using the Blend-If sliders, since those would allow me to refine how much of the shadows/highlights to ignore a little better.

This video is so brief, it's not clear to us what the Apply Image is doing. Is it only applying the dodge curve to the lighter areas and the burn curve to the darker areas? How is that threshold determined? I guess this is okay for global dodges and burns, but not so useful when you want to apply variations to localized areas. How would that be done?

Probably this technique can addditionaly be improved by using blend-if where you could make the lightening effect apply more to the light area of the mask you have choosen to dodge and vice versa.
