I'm currently working for a degree in animation & motion graphics. I'm taking a digital photography course this term and I have been watching your videos instead of the lectures provided by my professor to learn techniques. You have such a warm and approachable presentation in all of your videos and they are so engaging and easy to follow! You are a natural teacher and I am so grateful to have found this channel. Keep up the excellent work!
Usually, I see this type of video, and it is either ridiculously difficult or overly simplistic. This clip taught me something valuable. Simple without being simplistic. Thank you for the most instructive three minutes and fifty seconds ever! Highlt recommended!
This channel is awesome. I'm in the middle of retouching an image and needed to get some quick information about dodge & burn. Here it is quick, thorough, and perfect. Thank you Phlearn.
phlearn teaches the way I wish my instructors taught when I was in graphic design and web design back in the day. I'm getting back into photoshop after a long stint errr, it has been a while. I do think that all the tutorials should be grouped but none the less these are fantastic and the teaching style is the best I've come across. God Bless
Best video I’ve watched on how best to dodge and burn - you’ve nicely simplified things and it’s non destructible
Omg... this just changed my life. Love the ease and simplicity! Thank you so much!!!!!!!!
I'm posting this comment halfway through the video and I can say I definitely appreciate this video, thanks for helping me in all of my photoshop projects! Edit: I have now watched the video and I love how the two tools combined create a virtual spotlight, once again your an absolute legend Aaron.
Nice, slow and detailed. I was able to write down all my notes, edit your sample image and two of mine in under four minutes .... even had time for a coffee. Great work Aaron
Aaron, you are undoubtedly the best photoshop teacher !! Thanks for the amazing videos you keep posting. There is always something new to learn!
You have hands down the best tutorials on youtube i have ever watched. Thx and keep up the great work Aaron!
Wow, short, to the point AND useful=A keeper
Awesome job thank you.Perfectly explained. I now use Vibrance and tool and Selective Colour with this exact same technique. The Brush tool is activated using B key on your keyboard and the brush can be made smaller/bigger using the square bracket keys on the keyboard.
Happy New Year Phlearn!! I've been all over your videos learning and overcoming my fears with editing in Photoshop.
Nice short and helpful guide. I love your guides since they 're still helping me improve my skills in graphic arts. You were there in my first steps and still going ;)
BOOM!!! This technique is way better than the actual Dodge and Burn tools. Thank you!
Dude, I love this. So simple yet pretty powerful.
Much appreciated man, keep the tutorial coming ~
Great trick. Thank you. Could you elaborate on how the apply image thing works?
Awesome technique! Thank you for sharing..
love your videos!Easy to understand and follow along.Thank you Mr. Phlearn:)
You're like my favorite Photoshop guy. I can really tell your heart is in it, I love that!
Dude. This is gold. Pure gold. Thank you!

Very CLEAR and to the point. Thank you!
very nice as always. Really like your videos.
thanks Phlearn man :)
Great lesson. Thanks for posting!!
You really are an amazing teacher. Thank you so much! *From San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Thanks for this. I haven't thought about using Apply Image on a mask like that before. I think I would have defaulted to using the Blend-If sliders, since those would allow me to refine how much of the shadows/highlights to ignore a little better.
Yes Newyear with a phlearn tutorial. Come on Release a Showreel like Phlearn Showcase or something.
Best Photoshop teacher in The world 😄👏👍
Hey Aron! Happy new year. Your content is really amazing.
Happy New Year PHlearn

Amzing lesson. I made my notes. Great. Thank you
Dodge and burn tools are very useful and I like using them a lot for my designs on my KZread videos. Another great video by Phlearn!! Happy new year everyone!! 🌟🥳 😁
I really appreciate this. Thanks, mate
thanks. You rock !
May I ask what graphics tablet you are using and if you find it a good product?
I gave this a try but did not notice much of a difference in the photo, maybe it was something I did. Thanks for the tutorial.
I really love your way
Thank you for the video, however I don't understand why you had to use the 'Apply Image' options to the photo. How does that help, could you pls explain? Thanks.
very simple to follow. Thanks a lot
simple instructions. love it
Very interesting technique. I using a similar d&b but without applying the image in the masks. Thank you very much :)
Really useful. Thank you!

Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this nice method!
Hello. That very cool. I wonder if I could do something like that in my photo editor. Thanks
Thank you for the best tips ever Aaron :-)
You can take this a step further by using the UnderLying Layer slider and blending in the adjustments.
Easy and simple. ..thanks
Brilliant! Thanks
Love this new technique! A lot easier and funny
How does that differ from processing the RAW image and doing only highlights or blacks (or similar) etc. ?
Thank you !

Cool ffect and never thought about doing dodge and burn like this
Just by saying phlearn you later am now hooked to this channel

Thank you for this photoshop trick
wow supper method! thanks a lot
Can you use this technique just on the face to boost highlights?
Quick question, would it have been easier to use vignette for burn?
Muchas gracias!
Happy New Year PHlearn 🥳
Superb!!
Hi Haron! , do you use wacom med or small tablet? Say hello from Costa Rica!,
I just can't do this when I open the new layer it doesn't let me draw with the brass it says that I have to press alt and nothing happens
Happy new year
thank you for this
So everything was good till I wanted to paint... mmm after changing from white to black I just had my moving tool active, which tool do you use to paint for this specific action? Thanks great videos man keep it up.
Thank you very much..
Now i know, thank's ! :)
thank you so much omg
So much better then when I use the gradient tool in Lightroom.
As Always Great Vid, but I Prefer the High Pass Dodge & Burn method😛
thanks, finally i know dodging and burning!
This one made me subscribe. Perfectly explained!
Ty so much
My curves box has a ton of small squares instead of the standard amount. Not sure how it changed but do you know how to revert it back to normal? 😭
very good video
Thanks!
Thank you :)
you the best
This video is so brief, it's not clear to us what the Apply Image is doing. Is it only applying the dodge curve to the lighter areas and the burn curve to the darker areas? How is that threshold determined? I guess this is okay for global dodges and burns, but not so useful when you want to apply variations to localized areas. How would that be done?
an awesome way for dodging and burning
how D&B is different from Contrast?
Probably this technique can addditionaly be improved by using blend-if where you could make the lightening effect apply more to the light area of the mask you have choosen to dodge and vice versa.
I’ve been using Photoshop since 1995 and still get tons of great tips and techniques from these videos. Thanks for making such great stuff!
Thank you ! Long tutorials can be a bit confusing at time, this just goes right at the essentials
Wow....
