Simple DIY Wood Chip Dryer

Ғылым және технология

Ok guys if you want to be successful with a wood gasifier and not produce tar. You MUST have DRY FUEL!!. No matter what anyone claims, regardless the dryer your fuel the less likely you are to produce tar in ANY gasifier. So save your selfs the heart ache and always run the dryest fuel possible and build a dryer.
My solution here is a simple DIY barrel drum rotisary dryer. I simply cut out the mid section and weld supports in place. I then install a screen using zip ties. Im using zip ties in case I may want to change the screen out. I can then simply cut the ties and zip tie in a different screen size any time.
You can also use engine exhaust heat by simply pointing the engine exhaust at the dryer to aid and expedite the drying process. Also a way to reclaim waste heat.

This guy is a bit like Wile E coyote, except his stuff works. It's a great channel because he shows the good, bad, and the ugly of the R&D process. I used to design and build machines for a living. I was more of a CAD designer who could also build, but one of the guys who I worked with could just start bolting spare parts together and make something that worked. We were as different as night and day, but we both respected eachothers abilities. The guy on this channel reminds me of him, which is a great compliment.

Thats funny becuase I used to build automated specialized machinery prior to starting Vulcan Gasifier back in 2012. I built automated farm equipment, Production machinery for variouse manufacturing process (Bigt 3, aerospace, and many others) I later became a field service repair engineer (my last job) for a high precision machine tool company. This was for mostly aero space jet engine parts and goverment contracted programs. I used to service the machine that profiled the JWTS mirror segments. Im the one that actually fixed that machine. Anyways these machines were extremely high precision and once you think at that level you are never the same again. lol. Yeah my education is mechanical engineering and I have CAD experience that dates back to the mid 80's starting with AutoDesk R8. Yeah even before Pro E was even a thing. Ive ran every CAD software platform there is.

@Thrive Energy Systems I used to work for a Japanese machine tool company. Our largest machines were 18 oversized tractor trailer loads. All of our geometries had to be within 3 microns. I felt like a failure if I didn't keep them within +/-1 micron. You're absolutely right, working on machine tools, changes you forever.

@@cornpop7805 Yup everything is fluid even a diamond. Everything is always in motion. Yeah the tollerance on the machine ways were 2 tenths per foot so not quite to the tollerances you were working with. The levels we used to scrape the way purches were so sensitive when a train rolled through from a near by train track we would have to wait for it to pass.

Yeah I think he’s years ahead of a lot when it comes to gasification . Wait to see what happens when main stream catches on .

How many pounds of water weight you figure is in your 55 gal chip dryer. I am all about letting Mother Nature do the work.

I dont know. This fuel probaboly should not weigh more than 80 lbs when dry. Its at least twice that fresh from the pile.
