Zenner diodes if used for very precise control voltages should have a 100nFceramic capacitor in parallel to eliminate some of the zenner noise. Zenner noise is worse at low current and a zenner should never be used at less than 10% of it's rated working current (this would cause voltage tolerance issues too). Also R1 in the transistor only current regulator should be selected to have approximately 5% of the current flow of that required by the whole circuit - this is because the hfe of a medium power transistor is rarely over 50 (sometimes as low as 20) for medium currents (a bit more at low current) and by medium current I mean medium with reference to that particular transistor. EG a medium current for a 5A part would be 500mA. Low current would be 50mA and high current would be 1A+.

ZeNer not Zenn-er Zeners are not for precise voltage references. The noise by the Zener is usually trivial except in high-gain audio circuits or such.

So in essence if you're running up to 1A it's better to use a resistor as a current limiter rather than a current limiting circuit? If not what am i reading backwards?
