I bought my Mosin in 2008 and didn't know about these tricks to remove the goo and I wasn't aware of the "how to" videos on KZread, so I spent hours upon hours cleaning my rifle

I have the same Mosn, it is also a 1933 Tula :) A good way to clean the action, and barrel is to take a PVC drainpipe that fits the length of rifle. Seal one end, and dump the barrel-action into the pipe, and then fill it with warm water, and the mineral spirits.

Picked one up a week ago, watched 20 video's on how to clean all that cosmo off, scared the shit out of me, then i read cosmo melts at 120°, so I bought a plastic tub at Target. Disassembled the rifle, put it in the oven at 220 for an hour, put the parts in the tub, poured a big pot of boiling water over it, agitated it, dumped the water did that entire process twice, not 1 drop of cosmo anywhere on or in the rifle, recoil spring, trigger, bore, nowhere. No brushes, rods, chemicals. Just paper towels, a little red tacky, some Mobil 1, it runs like a DEERE

Good video. I will do this on my royal tiger import guns i just got. They were actually in remarkably good shape. Not one missing part or mark on the stock and all the blueing is present! The only thing i havent done is cleaned the bore to really see it but they look not bad. Im not looking foward to taking those bolts apart tho :(

Just pour boiling water on metal parts. The heat will melt cosmoline and heat metal, so metal dries really fast.

You can use a hair dryer on wood which sweats it out, then put some sort of absorbent compound on it (like sawdust) and it comes right off if you don't live in a warm area!

Scrubbing bubbles also works

I live in the great white north so a hair dryer on low seemed to work fine. Just try not to burn the wood.

Ok to use ammonia?

The sights are set up for use with the bayonet as soviet troops would even zero thier weapon with it on. if your expected to use it in combat why not build/train as you fight right?

Kerosene stinks. We used gasoline in the army but that is too volatile a thing to use really, especially if you do this in a heated garage. Paint thinner bath works. A small plastic container, put your pieces in, add some paint thinner and go have a coffee. Come back later and most of the grease will have dissolved. A once over with an old toothbrush and a rag and a quick rinse bath in clean thinner, dry, oil and you are good to go.

I use mineral spirits but yeah kerosene works too it it fairly quick with it.

most mosings are forced matched serials after the war nothing really to brag on when it comes to a mosing lol
