Simple 4D animation using Navisworks!

The 4D timeliner in Navisworks Manage/Simulate is actually much simpler than you may expect. By putting together a basic program and some sets of elements, we can link them together using Navisworks time liner.
Oh and yeah we crash 3 times. Awkward.
I hope you enjoy the session and learn something new! Feel free to comment any feedback/questions below, or follow my channel if you enjoyed this.

    Nice explanation. I've actually seen a Dynamo script through Revit that does this using periodic Run. So Dynamo might actually be a better option than Navis as it can be manipulated more without having to be exported to Navis

    Interesting idea, I can imagine it might get pretty slow at larger model scales though. Lots of geometry to preview, or hide/isolate if it's in Revit.

    Maybe it would be easier to do search sets by adding shared project parameter to all elements that you're about to animate, like "construction step" and numerate them as you draw revit model. Ofc that wouldn't save any time if you decide to do it after the fact.. but if you know you're going to do it before you start modeling, it might be a useful parameter to have. But i had no idea this is the feature Navis has. Cool stuff! Question: what would you consider to be the best alternative to Navis, considering the issues?

    "Navisworks can be very temperamental"??? That's like saying the Titanic had some watertight issues around 00:05 on 15 April 1912. It's a bit galling that as Autodesk's anchor into BIM, Navisworks doesn't appear to enjoy much development (like - any). Brilliant tutorial - I always get a lot from these. Thanks for persisting ABG

    Haha yes I definitely could be a bit less friendly in my description of Navisworks - it's been a bit like watching an old friend refuse to grow up whilst we're all moving onward and upward; a very frustrating experience to have enjoyed using it at first and then watch it go. It had/s so much potential, but Autodesk doesn't seem to be interested in it versus cloud offerings. Revizto is my prediction for where the industry will move to, and many are already going that way. It's the spiritual successor in my eyes (BIM360 Design collab's tool is pretty rubbish versus Navisworks still).

    I agree Autodesk is neglecting Navisworks as they are focusing on BIM360 which will eventually replace Navisworks. I also have a thought for a future tutorial I would like to know what kind of workflow is best to do 3D construction details e.g window jamb to sill corner. I am finding revit is a real dog when it comes to doing those and Im having to use Sketchup. Which is a pain as its a different work environement and means I have to maintain multiple models. It will be real interesting as 3D details are being requested more and more I have a project were the facade engineer is requesting me to do 30+ of them, so you can imagine how much of a time suck it is.

  • @AussieBIMGuru

    @AussieBIMGuru

    3 жыл бұрын

    I doubt that BIM360 will take over Navisworks entirely unless they can get all customers on the cloud and capture all features there that Navisworks has. The clash detective there leaves a lot to be desired, and is still nowhere near as powerful as the one in NW. I expect platforms like Revizto have a much higher chance of replacing it. Thanks Quintin. To be honest your facade engineer should be doing their own 3D details, it is a waste of time for architects to model up all those detailed extrusions in 3D. From a junctioning perspective sure, but we should not waste our time technically detailing systems as systems (e.g. all the beads/blocks/extrusions of a window suite). At the most you should only 3D detail your scoped items, and placehold their facade elements as boxes. I'd be happy to show a detail in a tutorial that doesn't involve overly technical parts, so probably not a window junction but maybe a brick to slab with stud wall in 3D, given that these are all architectural scope items. I actually have used Revit for this in the past, it can be done fairly easily with some setup work (Revit doesn't come ready out of the box to do this, but neither does any program really). My method is roughly: - Build/manage a 3D detailing parts library - Same for a model, with common elements like membranes/linings as walls - Link in the main model, halftone/underlay - Section box around the detail junction - Model up the detail using families (loadable/and or system) The benefit to this is that your detail can be aligned and linked to the main model potentially, and you are not relying on import/export workflows or managing drawing sheets across multiple formats/programs. I would never do a 3D detail inside the same model as the documentation itself, as there are too many elements that would interact with the detail elements, and you run the risk of them being deleted by accident.

    @@AussieBIMGuru I totally agree facade engineers should do it. and is something I am disputing currently. The situation here in Auckland the council is expecting more and more form architects aswell as from the facade engineers. So currently I have 2 Facade engineering companies 1 is to do the main documentation (but doesnt cover all corners of the building) and the other reviews architectural and other facade engineers drawings. To make it better the architectural drawings and facade drawings have to be at shop drawing level before building consent. Architecture here in Auckland is becoming more engineering than design so frustrating. Yes that sounds like a very simiar work flow to what I am doing but still find it quite slow. I also find using design options for isolating the 3D details handy aswell.
