Simon & Mark Solve Sudoku Together!

** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
We wanted to say thank you to DiMono for his May Patreon reward and he suggested we might like to tackle one of his "beast level" puzzles... so today both Simon & Mark take on Everything Is Rihgt, an astonishing construction that must be solved twice; once with the clues treated as being true and once with the clues being treated as false!
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingth...
Rules:
This is a puzzle that must be solved twice! Normal sudoku rules apply. Normal Killer, Little Killer, Quadruple, Kropki, Thermometer, Palindrome, Maximum, Minimum, and XV rules apply (see below for detailed rules). Red clues are each at least one of normal Skyscrapers, X-Sum, or Sandwich clues. After solving the puzzle, save your solution, because it's time to solve it again as a Wrogn puzzle! All clues in the grid must be made invalid in the finished solution, and red clues cannot be ANY of valid Skyscrapers, X-Sum, or Sandwich clues. To be considered invalid, the maximum cell must be less than AT LEAST one adjacent cell, the minimum cell must be greater than AT LEAST one adjacent cell, thermometers must NOT increase from bulb to tip, and quadruple circles may have some BUT NOT ALL listed digits in the surrounding cells. A "less than" sign effectively becomes a greater-than-or-equal-to sign. A "greater than" sign effectively becomes a less-than-or-equal-to sign. ADDITIONALLY, when solving the Wrogn version, no digit may be the same as it was in the Right version. i.e. if R1C1 was a 1 the first time, it may not be a 1 the second time. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO SOLVE THE WROGN VERSION WITHOUT FIRST SOLVING IT NORMALLY
Correct rules would be:
Killer: Digits cannot repeat within a cage and sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage (if given).
Little Killer: Clues outside the grid with an arrow give the sum of the digits in the direction of the arrow.
Quadruple: The digit(s) in a circle must appear at least once in the four cells touching the circle.
Kropki: Cells separated by a white dot must contain consecutive digits; cells separated by a black dot must contain digits in a 1:2 ratio (ie one digit must be double the other).
Thermometer: Along a thermometer, digits must increase from the bulb end.
Palindrome (grey lines without bulbs): digits along the palindrome must read the same forwards and backwards.
In a grey cell with four arrows facing outwards, the digit in the cell must be greater than the digits in the four orthogonally neighbouring cells.
In a grey cell with four arrows facing inwards, the digit in the cell must be less than the digits in the four orthogonally neighbouring cells.
XV: Cells separated by an X must contain digits summing to 10.
Sandwich: The clue outside the grid gives the sum of the digits sandwiched between the 1 and 9 in that row/column.
X-Sums: The clue outside the grid gives the sum of the first X digits in that row/column, where X is the digit in the cell at the start of that row/column.
Skyscrapers: The clue outside the grid gives the number of buildings "seen" from the direction of the clue (treating each digit as a building with a size equal to its value and noting that taller (higher) digits therefore obstruct the view of shorter (smaller) digits.

@@nochsta Except that makes perfect sense. Having the computer do it is cheating. Having a friend do it is still relying on human skill (and human fallibility, although when it comes to the Sudoku part of Sudoku puzzles that's more of a Simon thing than a Mark thing), and so it is cooperation rather than cheating.

This was a triumph. There was a little bit of hesitation right at the start when they were both spotting different things, but once we got past that, it turned out to be quite the collaboration. I really enjoyed how their styles complemented each other, and how they complimented each other for spotting things. I liked how sometimes Mark wouldn't tell Simon specifically what to do but rather where to look so that Simon could work it out. I liked how Mark would come up with some logic and then Simon would explain it to the viewer. I liked how they kept each other from making typos and silly mistakes. I liked that there was a teensy bit of teasing but you could tell they really respect each other. Just well done overall!

37:50 Simon and Mark didn't realise 9 could go in the left tip of the thermo if the right one breaks it. Here the better way: After doing the sandwich logic in column 6 you can use that 8 has to be in R7C123 which eliminates one of the possible places for 8 in column 6. Recognizing 8 is very restricted in column 6 you will see it goes just in the tip of the thermo. The remaining tip now can't be 9 anymore!

Placing 8 in R8C6: R234C6 =139 because of sandwich logic. R1C6 = 2 because >3 x-sum at the top (1 is required in sandwich) R5C6 can't be 8 because R6 would be lower. R6C6 get's reflected in R7C5 (only way the cage breaks) seeing marked 8's in box 7. R7C6 see above. R9C6 would break

This is probably my favorite video on the channel! Lovely to see you two solving together, it even made the puzzle look easy because your skills complement each other so well! As the dictionary definition for complement says: "add to (something) in a way that enhances or improves it; make perfect." and this video truly was made perfect by you working together.

That was incredible! Super nice flow of logic coming from both sides, I loved it! Thank you Simon for taking the time to explain the logic slowly. And the puzzle in itself is a masterpiece. For the special rule linking both grids, I chose to replace all 1's in the first grid by pencil-mark A's in the second one, 2's by pencil-mark B's, and so on, so that my grid was self-sufficient.

That was brilliantly mad! Thank you DiMono for that astonishing puzzle. It requires to be so careful to solve, and definitely much more to build it. Wow! And thanks Mark and Simon for appearing together, that was so lively and... too fast for me 😅 I had your "two-brain power" on pause quite a few times.

What a brilliant puzzle. Both versions were excellent. I've no idea how one would go about setting this, it's complete madness. To have a grid where the same rules are either completely right, or completely wrogn, and for the solution to the second to depend on the first just boggles the mind. I didn't even bother trying this, because I wasn't in the mood for a complicated set of rules, and preferring just to watch the pair of you. After watching your solve, I'm regretting that decision. You did well working together. In the games, I thought Mark felt a bit out of it, but he was genuinely useful here. Both solves were nice and efficient. Some of the things Mark spotted, like the 39 in R1, were brilliant. I don't know if it was the presence of Mark, or just the nature of the puzzle, but there was very little sign of Simon doing his normal Simon thing, so nary a shout from me. You always seem to have technological problems when you collaborate. Rather than using the discord server, have you considered any of the video conferencing apps like Teams or Zoom? I've not tried Zoom, but I've seen several other channels use it to good effect. In Teams (and possibly also in Zoom), Mark could take control of the keyboard and mouse, if he wanted to demonstrate a point, although that might get confusing. It pays to be like a pilot, and say "you have control" before handling control to the other.

It's so interesting how different this is from a normal video. They go so much faster, just bouncing ideas off each other and not explaining as much to the viewers. It's a really cool change to see maybe their more natural solving process, rather than the educational style they usually have for us.

This was such fun. I loved Mark's comment "I've solved the entire puzzle in my head" as Simon was reading the birthdays (and it wasn't even a particularly long list) -- it could almost have been true, and you could see Simon thinking "is he serious?" for a millisecond. But once they got down to solving, it was fascinating to see them playing off each other. And then the puzzle itself was quite interesting, though fairly baroque.
