I think it's a bit embarrassing for him that his mum's come out to publicly defend him. A bit cringe tbh. If Harry stopped scoring own goals and having howlers then he won't get criticized. If he played for a club like West Ham and he wasn't getting picked for England he would be fine. The problem lies that he's playing for such high profile teams and he's clearly out of his depth. It's unfair on him because he won't be able to live up to high expectations because he's not very good. Take him out the firing line.

Comical that a 30 year old man who gets 200kp/w needs his mum to defend him, when he can barely defend himself on and off the pitch. Unfortunately for Harry Maguire, he in some ways is the architect of his own (I wont say downfall, but maybe) problems. He or his entourage seem unable to process the fact that he is now far from his best. This is something that he could alleviate a little if he spoke about working on his game to get back to where he once was. I think that Harry, by sticking his head in the sand and refusing to recognise where he is right now is making a lot of fans angry. Southgate, continuing to select Harry is compounding the fans anger. Then on top of it, Southgate comes out and tries to defend Harry after the Own Goal. A final issue is that Harry turned down the transfer to a club where he would have got to play every match. He would have been able to regain match fitness and sharpness. What has angered the Man Utd fans is that Harry turned down the transfer knowing that he wasnt going to get any game time with Utd. Logically then, the only reason he refused the transfer was because of the hefty paycheck. While he had every right to do this, it does comes across as very mercenary. Honestly, in my opinion, the fans do have reason to be frustrated and angry with the current situation. Its a problem caused by Harry Maguire, his agent and family as well as by Southgate. No one close to him seems to be giving him good advice. They are all too busy telling him what an amazing player he really is.

I would argue Southgate has created this situation by putting him in the England squad. Harry also needs to take criticism as the only issue we have as Man UTD fans is that he is not of the level required. He was stripped of the captaincy and told of his pecking order and told he can leave by Ten Hag. Refuses to pay offer from Manchester united to leave for West Ham in which if he put himself first he would have done as the pressure and expectations would have dropped and maybe found his level. But no his choice was to stay for Money, so I'm not going to say poor Maguire because we know he isn't at the level he is playing at yet we are going to see him play and make mistake after mistake and show his level again this season and as fans/media and pundits will obviously comment on his performance and this will keep happening. Can't cry about a situation you put yourself in for money and that it's undeserved as everyone knows your level apart from you and your family apparently but keep yourselves in the firing line Harry smart move.

If you’re in that space, expect criticism. If it gets too much, it’s ok to retire and join the other lads with a 15 pounds per hour jobs. No one is gonna ridicule you in that space. I’m sure all these is priced in when footballers are paid what they get. Abuse is not allowed, but criticism is fair game. Maguire should’ve gone to West Ham to get regular game time, and I’m sure he’s got enough for that level, but he didn’t want a pay cut. So he’s partly to blame for all these. He should go to a lower team and end his career on some sort of a high.

When Maguire claimed “I have nothing to prove to anyone,” it told me loud and clear that he doesn't feel like he needs to try anymore. He expects to be picked on past performances and this is not how football should work, especially at the biggest clubs in the world and at national level. On that basis, let's bring back Tony Adams (who was a great defender, I might add) or Sol Campbell! It's a flawed argument and will get no sympathy from fans. It comes across that your ego is too big. Personally, this kind of self-righteous attitude is definitely a red flag to me. When a player uses phrases like Maguire has done in media interviews explaining that he feels that he doesn't need to prove anything to anybody, it actually highlights clearly his lack of ambition or determination to improve or stay ahead of the competition for his place in the first team or even the match-day squad. It's clear he's been told he will be picked for England regardless of his situation at United, so it's no wonder he feels has nothing to prove! That's when you sell a player in this state of mind and move them on from your club, or these kinds of players become a drag on your resources and slow your movement forward as a club. In the end, players that talk and behave like this get managers sacked - they know they have some influence in the team and ultimately, they begin to move underhandedly in the shadows to cause problems for the manager, whispering negative thoughts to other players to subvert the manager's authority in the club, especially if those other players are also not picked for the squad. I'm interested to know what Maguire has done in his training regime to address the merited criticism of his lack of speed on the turn, quickness of his footwork and making better decisions with the ball BEFORE it arrives at his feet so he is aware of what is coming towards him by the opposition press. If he can tell us how he is still improving his game in training to work his way back into the squad, then show those improvements on the pitch when called upon, then he might get more credit from fans. However, he hasn't told anyone how he is going to improve because he hasn't done anything to improve his game whatsoever. This is because, in his own words, he "has nothing to prove"! He'll just sit out his contract on mega money and more fool Man Utd for giving him ridiculous wages that locks him into the club until his contract expires. On current form, he won't be getting a new one, but it might also be the nail in his coffin career-wise for another big move elsewhere.

Simon for president. Couldn’t agree more, social media is where a lot of abuse comes from. Just have a policy that players can’t be on social media, they do that in some places in American colleges….

I think Simon is trying to make a distinction between mainstream media and the online fan channels who are in essence media as well, whether he accepts it or not. Maguire isn't good enough plain and simple, but fan channel narratives obviously reach the players, their voices in some cases are bigger than the media

Mainstream media online fans there’s a lot of crossover because almost everything is online these days and some fan channels are quote unquote sports journalists or pundits themselves. There’s very little distinction between the two. If any.

This is probably a genius PR spin. Rather than talk about Scotland, Ukraine, Denmark, Italy, Senegal, France, Iran and Germany. Now we are talking about how he gets bullied and how unfair criticism is. Deflected the attention away from Maguires performances to Maguires humanity.

Can’t believe what I’m hearing from Jim. United fans boo him (I don’t agree with the booing) but they do so because NONE of us want him here! He certainly want Captain material and frankly WE as man United fans pay hi bloody ridiculous wages but the purchases we all make. He has been given ample opportunity to be a success at Utd. The fact is, he’s slow, he makes too many mistakes. He come out and makes stupid statements like “i have nothing to prove”. It’s statement like that which then rules fans up because his performances have been rubbish. Therefor he should be busting his gut to make sure people know he’s working harder, people can see the extra effort, dedication, willingness to improve then once he’s shown his team mate and his manager that then he might get picked by ETH. Then one he’s on the pitch he should t be communicating with fans, when he his stupid passes or long balls and it was clearly his error don’t start point to your teammate like he was in the wrong. Harry was even told by our manager AND our DOF, that he can be sold… he is that good, he is that world class that even though Manchester United told him he could go at the right price the ONLY club who made a formal bid were West Ham United. No offence to WHU fans but why did the lights of Arsenal, Man City, Newcastle, Chelsea and remember Chelsea bought a lot of people, and yet none of them attempted to buy Harry Maguire. The sheer fact that Gareth and Harry’s mummy are calling people out is absurd. Manchester United fans love and support our club. Michael Owen for just 1 example, as United fans we HATED him, for what he did for Liverpool. Now were Man United fans booing him when he would play wether he started or came on off the bench? At the very start their were some boo’s. However, after 1 game in particular when he scored a stoppage time winner, we were all signing his name, cheering him on and at that point no matter for how long it was for, he was OUR player. So people who are saying man united fans are the problem, the media is the problem, the pundits are the problem, the commentators are the problem… its ironic how each and every time its always a victim mentality where people cannot say what they truly think. People are unable to say something like OH MY GOD get that piece of …. Out of our club NOW. So were unable to say that because we need to think about good old Harry’s mental health? I dont think so. If you play sport for your profession, if you play for a football that has supporters, who use their hard earned cash to maybe travel to old Trafford for a tour, or for a match or to our megastore which then subsequently go towards paying peoples wages, your damn right that we are going to have our say. Do some people go over the top, absolutely! However sadly thats what comes from being a well known person. It doesn’t make it right but sadly its just one of those things where you know if your honest wit yourself as a high profiled person, you know at some point the keyboard warriors will come and pay you a visit. Now again, it doesn’t make it right but you need to be prepared for it. Not everything is good 100% of the time and to put it bluntly, your happy enough running towards us fans so that we can all celebrate a goal together and as a player you literally life for those moments when 20-80 thousand fans are chanting your name…. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. Finally, the bottom line is this. As io said earlier, harry was told he could leave the club during this last transfer window, WHU put a bid in… the ONLY thing that stopped harry Maguire from becoming a WHU player was Harry Maguire. So if harry was feeling bullied, or pressured or if he felt like he has NOTHING to prove to anyone then the answer was simple… IF you want game time and i say if lightly, then why not accept a move to WHU? Why not get your agent to drum up offers from elsewhere? If you are SOOOOO unhappy at being United’s 5th or 6th choice centre back then why not leave?. He had every right to stay and run down his contract if he chooses too because he’s entitled to it… but you cannot at all decide to stay or decline a move which is purely based around finances and then complain when your not getting the same game time that you’d have got if you went to WHU. For me personally, there’s 2 sets of people who need to leave UNITED as quickly as possible. The first lot are the glazers and the next is the Maguire’s both in their entirety.

It’s one thing behind honest, it’s another jumping on a bandwagon to criticize the crap out of someone just because everyone else is doing it. You guys in the media might only be critical with a little bit of humour, but regular people take that and amplify it to something much larger, darker and more sinister

Thank you. Sifting through the stupid comments to finally find one that describes exactly the situation Harry, his mom and Southgate are referring too.. the media for one, knows exactly what they are doing putting out certain headlines and narratives to get idiotic fans going. Idiotic fans hiding under cute and clever usernames on social media is NOT fair criticism. Harry no doubt has work and sacrificed to earn his place as a pro baller. He wasn't just born a baller with massive amounts of money (as Simon thinks) which automatically means you can be ridiculed relentlessly for making mistakes.

You do realise that Harry is the only player to be relegated twice in the same season, Pro Baller who are you kidding, It's obvious he does not want to give up the inflated pay check, He does have something to prove though and that's the fact he is worth the pay check he's receiving weekly as he has not shown anywhere near the performances in the last two years to be earning the wages he picks up @@giuliobovo6195

So you think its fair for Southgate to keep picking a player who is underfire, doesn't play for his club and when he does, he doesn't play particularly well. Southgate is the one causing him the most problems by not only picking him for the squad, but starting him as well....knowing full well the backlash he is most likely to get. That's not the sign of a good manager. On top of that, Maguire knows he isn't 1st, 2nd, 3rd or even 4th choice CB when all players are fit at Man Utd. He then had a chance to go to West ham where he would have had a much better chance to not only start playing football regularly, which would have given a better claim to playing for England...instead he chose money. That's not the sign of a true professional. He also doesn't help himself by coming out with comments saying 'he has nothing to prove'. Again, he knows this will cause backlash. I do admit that I do feel sorry for him, but unfortunately, this is what football is like. Southgate and Maguire only really have themselves to blame for this situation, more so Southgate.
