You would put federer above mayweather? That is ridiculous. Federer in the 00's benefitted from only having to worry about Nadal on clay until 2007 ish, when Nadal started getting his act together on the other surfaces and djokovic emerging as the next great hard court player. There were two players who could have very well stopped federer winning as much as he did from 04-07, where the bulk of his slams came from, in marat safin, and David nalbandian. Both of them hated tennis, both of them supremely talented, both of them injury prone, and both of them pretty much non existent for large chunks of the tour. Federer is top 5 player of all time, behind Djok, Nadal, Sampras. I have him at 4. Could never take down Nadal at the French open. That for me is an asterisk when debating the best player ever.

It speaks volumes that when Roger was at his peak, his three main rivals - Nadal, Murray, and Djokovic - had to wreck their bodies with extreme fitness rituals just to be able to remain on the court with him for more than three sets, whereas Federer would appear in numerous finals as if his pre-match prep was a trip to a luxury spa.

Had the solid challengers come through, RN and ND wouldn’t have won anywhere near as many Grand Slams as they have. And if you were to make RF the same age as them he’d have far more GS because he played in a far more competitive era before there was even the big 3 then the big 4. Plus domestically he’s had two sets of twins to deal with at home. Based on all of these factors (and I haven’t included injuries because RN has had persistent knee issues himself), for me as good as RN and ND are, RF is the GOAT.

A notable omission of the glowing tributes that have come in was the fact that Federer managed to reinvent himself again, and again, and again to match his body and the demands of the game. His movement was stifled in his latter years ever so slightly so he worked harder on his serve and it became a more potent weapon, he served&volleyed on a greater percentage of points to keep the rallies lower. He was the absolute King of knowing just what to do and when to do it.

In 2018 Rod Laver was asked by the Tennis Federation which player he regarded as the greatest of all . Without hesitation he said Roger Federer , adding that he ( Laver ) had a great career, but he could not compare with Roger Federer. Laver said , " He ( Federer ) is the best player in the World. "

if anyone can be held up as a role model, roger federer is that man. always conducted himself brilliantly with the media, kept his personal life away from the press and spoke highly of nadal who he had many battles with to win trophes and be world number 1. i dont like tennis. but today i feel tennis is very much poorer for his retirement.
