What a strange discussion. I mean, Crystal Palace has sort of defined consistency in terms of the lower mid table finish. They make it sound like they're 16th/17th most seasons, "treading water". In their ten years of EPL the lowest they came was 15th (once) and they came 10 th once and 11th three times. I think Palace have done remarkably well, by all means they should have been more of a yo-yo club. Not all teams can "kick on" in this league where, outside the top 6/7, you can barely keep a player beyond half a solid season. I don't know what you expect.

If Palace had invented dugouts then their treading water would be much more acceptable. Everton invented dugouts. We invented a MAJOR part of our game. Without our invention football as we know it wouldn’t exist. Palace have invented nothing so their existence is a waste of time. But Everton are one of the biggest clubs in world football because we invented dugouts.

No, it’s a daft charge to level against Palace - if they are “treading water”, the alternative is sinking. Establishing themselves fairly consistently as a sort of mid-table side in the top flight with comparatively limited resources is actually quite commendable. Impatient boom or bust attitudes never turn out well.

Palace are a brilliant club who gave us a fantastic away day last season and although the trips a nightmare I love going to Selhurst and have missed it greatly. As stated they have many injuries (like a lot of teams granted) and play United again at the weekend...priorities right now is getting points in the league. Good luck to them for the season!

I would argue that Crystal Palace have the perfect model for staying in the premier league. They sign predominantly lower mid-table standard players that are too good to keep them out of trouble but aren't good enough to play for the top sides so they don't lose their best players or they don't have to pay them obscene wages to keep them. It works perfectly if you ask me.

Southampton always get in this situation look at the season they had Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne and Rickie Lambert all sold, they are forever rebuilding because they simply cant compete financially. The mass exodus leaves a team fighting relegation, their back room and scouts will be raided too. Its unfortunate but we see a club like Brighton every few seasons, but they do have an owner who invested a lot so maybe they can survive the raid. Palace have managed to keep a balance by having good players that can keep them middle of the pack away from relegation, but no so good that the top 6 raid a large chunk of the team. They have a few academy products like Zaha that can go but one or two players you can survive, rebuilding half your starting 11 every season you cant

Firstly, the panel didn't observe the fact that Palace currently have Olise, Lerma, top scorer Edouard and new signing Franca all injured. We couldn't put anything like a 'best team' out anyway. We are also in a strange position where we might have our best First XI since we last came up yet perhaps our weakest squad. We have minimal full back cover, only one dependable reserve CB, one reasonable quality reserve CM and only one dedicated winger, in Olise. With a full team, over 38 games, we are possibly a top ten side. But a few critical injuries could see us really struggle. I understand Roy wanting to protect the squad. It's talented but very thin.

As a Palace fan.. The phrase "treading water" is a little unfair, and unfounded.. Since September 2017, when de Boer got sacked. We have NEVER been in the relegation zone.. Not once.. 6 Years, for a club the size of ours. To not even flirt with relegation. Is pretty great. And they now have a world class training setup in Copers Cope. They have a new stand on the horizon. Things are looking good. People are upset that we don't spend the most on players. But RIGHT NOW. We have a young squad, with value. We haven't got a team full of mutton. Teams could, and probably will come knocking for Guehi, Anderson, Eze, Olise, Doucoure.. We have no illusions we're a selling club.. AND to say "what's the point of Palace.. they never win any trophies.." is one of the stupidest things I've heard. I'm happy. And I think as a fanbase. We're happy with a good team. A good performance. And what the future brings, in terms of our academy, and development of the stadium.

@@Matthew-bu7fgThe academy producing football league players regularly and the chance to bring some into our squad. We're starting to see the shoots of that. The main stand done as that gets us a near 35K seater stadium. A big (relative) boost in commercial revenue which can go into the coffers and increase our wage/transfer budget. We need to be able to make £170M+ a year to actually have the financial welly to bring in more promising Championship players and build a proper 22 man squad. Then we can actually build the stable platform to go for a cup/europe.

Currently, the way the PL is set up 6 teams with big bucks are assured of staying in the prem. These are Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham. 3 of the other 14 can get relegated anytime. Burnley, Luton, and Sheffield United are most likely to get relegated. Brighton and Brentford will fight for the top 10. Wolves and Everton will look to survive along with Nottingham. So, stability and staying up is what all the other clubs play for. So Palace staying up is a priority and not the league cup.

I was having this conversation with someone the other day. Crystal Palace are unlikely to ever get relegated with Roy Hodgson in charge. He's a safe pair of hands. But he's also only ever going to get you to 13th and 14th placed finishes. What do fans think about that? Making a change is a risk. You could go down, you could achieve more. I think Vieira's dismissal was harsh and I don't think you can use him as a yardstick because he had a horrible run of fixtures which saw his dismissal and Roy was brought in when Palace's more pleasant fixtures came in. They could get into Europe with another manager. Or they could go down. Southampton replaced Nigel Adkins (who got them up) with a bloke called Mauricio Pochettino. Curbishley left Charlton, they brought in Dowie and that went... well let's say they haven't been seen since.

The premier League teams they are talking about should still easily be able to interchange their players and go through with the squads they have available.

Every club should be going for the league Cup be Liverpool or City, Palace or Everton..... this early in the campaign are u worried about injuries or squad rotation.... if Palace put out a full team and lose so , they tried if they put out a weak team as they did and lose and then lose this weekend .... what was the point ? Some teams can rotate and win , Palace should of played their fullish team tried to win , and the know they are playing utd the weekend .... utds confidence could be slighted , Palace are buzzing. I'd back utd -1 this weekend..... makes no sense to me.

This aged badly, within a few days they beat Man Utd at home with an even more depleted team. Palace always have to choose between securing staying up, and going for a cup run. With over 11 players (including their best players) injured it seems obvious they wouldn't play whatever's left of their best team. Manager's job is to keep the club/management happy, not bring memories for the players...

palace is a medium sized club. They are not as rich or big as Arsenal, Chelsea or Spurs. West Ham is bigger and has a bigger ground and won a trophy last season. Palace are where they should be given a club of their size. The question is imho what SHOULD Palace be doing? At least with Spurs, they won trophies in the past and have a big fanbase. Arsenal has a long history of winnign trophies. Chlesea has been dominant in the past 20 years. So they all have high expectations and needs and desires. Palace hasn't anything before. So what SHOULD they be doing?

Too much is being made of this to be honest, both teams heavily rotated… as they’re both having huge issues with injuries. Think there were 2/3 first team starting 11 players for either team. Palace didn’t perform as well as they could have, but the game will be a different proposition at the weekend… again with huge changes to both teams.

Yes, United had to rotate in their 80m CB and their new 55m midfielder signing and their 50m backup striker. And they are so devastated by injury that they even had to name 40m Van de Beek on the bench.

@@TP-pq9xx there’s 3 maybe 4 starting players in that line up if you counted Dalot… who before injury was secondary to AWB. Not to say there’s not quality in there… but it’s Manchester United… they should have depth with strong players. Not to mention Varane (return from injury), Mount (return from injury), Amrabat (brand new to the league and return from injury without playing any pre season football for Fiorentina), Hojland (again new and return from injury), Marital (Return from the longest injury period you can think of). So both teams were pretty ropey…. Palace started pretty well and kept it tight… but United (as they well should be) were far better on the day… and the difference in quality showed. Looking forward to a much more challenging, different game at the weekend. ✌️
