Campbell's perfectly good goal being disallowed. 06. Rooney injured before the tournament. Owen limping out during the group stage. Beckham went off early during Portugal game, before Rooney followed him for the stamping. Bobby Robson, Hoddle and Fabio could point to similar moments. Southgate has suffered no significant injuries (depending on your view of McGuire), no sending offs, no dodgy refereeing decisions. In 4 tournaments!! England is the most underachieving teams in history, hands down. For a country that claims to always have some of the best players in the world, they have very little to show for it. They had one win and two draws in group play against inferior opponents, and then barely scraped by Switzerland on penalties. And I'm saying this as a fan of the English team. I'm from the US, but have always considered the English team as my team to root for since the US team sucks.

We absolutely do not have the best players in the world! We have been awful and managed to stumble past Switzerland on pens, a team that couldn't beat scotland!

@heppolo haha well predictable is hardly a label you'd put on pickford either. Seaman was probably a tournament or 2 too far and the likes of Nigel martyn and Tim flowers were probably underutilised in-between seaman and the Robinson/green era

One thing I find bizarre is we praise domestic league champions who navigate winning a championship by winning ugly however grind out results in an international tournament and we hate it.

My France English combined would have all France back 5. a midfield of Rice Tchouameni and Kante Then a front line of Mbappe Kane Saka. i think saka is better than dembele and thuram. Conversely, Holland had France, Austria and Poland their group, all of whom, England would have struggled to get past. In the knockout phase, England made hard work of Slovakia and only a moment of brilliance from Bellingham saved them. In their next game against the Swiss, theY went a goal down and were again saved by the brilliant spotaneity of Bakayo Saka. Conversely, Holland comfortably beat Romania by 3-0 when it could have easily been six! And against Turkey, they went a goal down and came back to win the game 2-1 within normal time. Yes he received 'Flak' for playing without wingers and for not choosing Jimmy Greaves (when fit). The first game performance against Uruguay was woeful 0-0, but did improve in other group games. Perhaps a touch fortunate against Argentina who went down to 10 men when their Captain Rattin was sent off. They were also due to play their Semi-Final at Goodison Park, but the FA managed to switch the game to Wembley? Certainly by the Qtr Final stage the whole Country was behind the Manager and his team. Sir Alf had a plan (which he stuck to) with no wingers and whilst many thought this to be an ill advised strategy, he was lauded (quite rightly) for his team's ultimate success. I was 17 years of age at the time; who would have thought it could be another 58 years and counting.........

Simon, you're not arrogant to think England should beat Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia & Switzetland. You're arrogant to expect to get to the Final and win vs France or Spain and believe you should definitly beat the Netherlands off the back of scraping through Slovakia and bumbling past the Swiss on penalties after they played their worst game of the tournament (yes, even wost than vs Scotland).

Best players in the world ? No. England have a good squad and some very good players, and they are good enough to take part in Euros and World Cups with a chance of winning, same as several other countries, and that's as far as it goes. I see England are the best penalty takers in the world now as well, because they won one shootout, but if they lose a shootout before this is over they'll be labelled as bottlers. Media nonsense.
