Hamra street was my stomping grounds growing up in the ‘70s. A progressive avant-garde crucible of Oriental and Western cultures offering the latest in fashion, movies theatres, café trottoirs and anything else one’s heart might have desired. A melding of the traditional and the modern, the comfort of the past and the excitement of the future. The pêche melbas and Banana splits at Modca and the best wood-oven pizzas and grenadine sodas at Popeye’s further down at Raouché. Bell bottom pants, mini skirts, printed Ts and platform shoes were the fashion in a scene bathed in Americana with the iconic hippie peace sign decals everywhere. The Al Hamra and Strand theaters playing Jaws and Easy Rider and the Top Ten record store spinning the Doobie Brothers, Michel Sardou, Nina Simone and the Bee Gees. Lest we forget Tom Jones and Mireille Mathieu. Everything seemed right in the world at that moment in time. Hamra street let you know it was so with the call of the yanasib assehab peddler from across the street. A brief golden age where Hamra was its star. A magical moment in time which can never be recreated and which I had the privilege to experience.
