A sublime live performance by Simon Barere full of expressive freedom and spontaneity unlike any other interpretation. And matched by astonishing velocity, technical clarity, and beauty of tone when called for as well as tremendous power when needed. His playing is entirely without affectation or insincerity. Closer to the spirit of Liszt than any other pianist I've heard. Barere was a transcendent genius!

I always loved Barere. In his Liszt - Reminiscenses, and the Sonata - he flies straight into the sun! Madness! Another world! This degree of intenssity - when it is achieved at all - is the prerogative of very few. Howowitz is another one who can drive you mad. Rachmaninoff is always sane, never shows signs of madness, but he can vaporize you with his intensity, and you don't even know when it happens.\!

Horowitz said Barere could do more with one hand than most of us can do with two.

Both of them studied with Felix Blumenfeld at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. It's said that Barere was his favorite student.

There are better interpretations available. Listen to Katia Buniatishvili and you will delete Barere.

It's funny if it's a joke, but it's funnier if not a joke.

Music at this level don't admit of better, or worse. That empyrean is shared by all who give their lives and love for bloody fools like you, in all time and through eternity.

@@sachaperry2591 I am a pianist myself and would not call myself a bloody fool. It is true that it is said: degustibus non est disputandum, but you do not honestly want to claim that the Warsaw Piano Competition is run by bloody fools. Simon Barere was certainly a pianist who was often more concerned with speed than precision. In some sections of this recording he plays as if he had thick gloves on. There are simply too many wrong notes, his pedal treatment has nothing to do with Liszt and springs from the now outdated view that Liszt must thunder loudly above all else. The wrong notes often apply to Horowitz as well.

Well, as a pianist myself , I can certainly understand your position. Precision IS important. The text IS important( or there wouldn't be one). Horowitz's oeuvre overall. DOES present many instances of wrong notes. And since Horowitz and Barere. graduated in the same class at St. Petersburg, it's obvious that as they share the same conception in many areas and pieces( eg. The Tocatta by Schumann) that their attitude toward wrong notes might be similar

@@Greifenbach In all this I agree; the facts being incontrovertible. What I think YOU might be missing is the fact that he is not playing a concert HERE; he is letting his hair down at an after concert party , playing for his own amusement and that of the people there. I'm pretty sure he never thought it would be released. It is a rare musical document that shows astounding musicality ( the one thing you DON'T mention by the way) and vitality from a man who was a year away from dropping dead. So he was ACTUALLY closer to the empyrean than hopefully either of US are! Anyway, I take your points on board and apologize if I offended you, but I am one of those funny people who will forgive a lot for feeling. That being said, I will be interested to hear your recommendation. Finally( whew) I wouldn't say that the Warsaw is judged by idiots; but SOME might , and HAVE , on any given year....
