I was a couple years younger than Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon when this song came out. When I heard the line how strange it is to be 70 it struck me as to what a heavy line This is for guys in their 20s. I've listened to the song so many times over the years one of my favorite but now that I'm in my 70s the line does have a personal note about it. I have lost my son and my wife 15 months apart both to cancer . So many of my friends have passed on also. The last of my in-laws, my brother-in-law passed away yesterday. Mother-in-law, father-in-law, and five brother and sister-in-laws have passed away also. The last of my wife's family which was always my family too. How strange it is to be seventy . All my tomorrow's are gone.

Your words are soo true. Youth is about the future while age is about the past. I just found a list of older celebrities online who are 85-100 and there are still some years left in all of us.

I'm a fair bit younger than yourself, but it hurts like hell to lose loved ones, doesn't it - that's why I'm here, again, revisiting this song... just found out this past weekend I lost two more friends, one real important to me, like a little brother really... after I lost so many people already, including the girl I was to marry, who passed away aged just 35, but I comfort myself with the belief that I'll see them all again one day. I'm sure your son and your wife and the rest will be patiently waiting for you. Till then we can listen to great music like this and remember the good times. Take care my friend.

I was a teen when this song came out, and it was heartbreaking then. I never thought I would be one of the "old friends", sharing a park bench, lost in my overcoat. But, here I am, just as they sang. No regrets, just nostalgic. Time is a master none of us can disobey!

My heart is aching today that he can not sit on a park bench with one of his own old friends. When I die no one will carry his memory on and he will finally be truly dead.

I’ll be 67 in a couple of months. I used to think about my two oldest friends whenever I’d listen to this song, and could picture myself with one or the other of the two of them on that park bench, in our overcoats reminiscing about the fifty years past. They’re both gone now, and the line that still makes me weep for them remains, “Preserve your memories, they’re all that’s left you.” How could I have seen how those words would have come to fruition when we were listening to this at the tender age of 15? Kevin and Marc, I miss you both more than you could ever know, my Brothers. Rest Easy.

Old friends Old friends Sat on their park bench Like bookends A newspaper blown through the grass Falls on the round toes On the high shoes Of the old friends Old friends Winter companions The old men Lost in their overcoats Waiting for the sunset The sounds of the city Sifting through trees Settle like dust On the shoulders Of the old friends Can you imagine us Years from today Sharing a park bench quietly? How terribly strange To be seventy Old friends Memory brushes the same years Silently sharing the same fear Time it was And what a time it was It was . . . A time of innocence A time of confidences Long ago . . . it must be . . . I have a photograph Preserve your memories They're all that's left you

This song hits me very hard. I'm 66 and have an "old friend" who was recently diagnosed with nodules in his brain. The lines "Time it was and what a time it was--a time of innocence, a time of confidences. Long ago it must be--I have a photograph. Preserve your memories--they"re all that's left you." are so appropriate and so gut-wrenching. I've been a fan since around 1966. None of us know how much time we've got, so make the most of it.

I learned 41 years ago how there aren't any guarantees when my father died of cancer. He too was 66. And he was the toughest, hardest working, youngest looking 66 I ever saw. And they say I am my father.

“silently sharing the same FEAR...” I used to sing this song to my two boys (older dogs) when I wanted to appreciate their short time on earth, but I was silently fearing their mortality, that one fear S&G sing about. I saw them as two older men, as old friends, growing up and older together. sadly, they are now both gone and I listen to this beautiful version and remember that one fear, but mostly the good memories I had with them...I miss them terribly. “preserve your memories, there all that’s left you”

Paul Simon was a genius. Not the greatest guitarist ever but his sense of harmony was well beyond most. These two were an anomaly even in their time. Just brilliant songwriting duo. They have a way of gently force feeding reality to people who were otherwise unwilling to consider it. This song should be mandatory listening for teenagers who think they are going to live forever.

Today, at 63, my sighs are filled with feelings gathered over many years. I remember my dog Grettle, and I sigh. I remember old friends, and I sigh. That exhale is filled with sweet memories. When I was young my sighing was only for things like boredom, or impatience. You older ones know what I am talking about.

I've always loved this song for all these years. It's everybody in the sunset of their life. Even as a teenager it made me cry and now as friend start passing away it even seems more prolific.

This is a favorite of mine and an old friend of mine. We use to listen to the entire album and it is one of their best. How strange indeed---we are now among those being sung about.

this piece.... makes my heart and soul fill with the utmost peace and enchantment. as if every chord describes the way the world is in its perfection. that my little world has an actual depiction. this piece truly tugs at my heart and creates the most fragile line of love.

I think this is the saddest song written or song by both Paul & Art. I got teary eyes the fist time I listen to it also makes me question why is it that life treats some badly, they both did pretty well professionally. but the pain & pressure that they both went through, breaking up so early in their profession must be tough.what was going through their minds singing this song I wander? regret, sadness? they blend together perfectly, love them both.

The album has taped conversations with 70'ish couples and is stunning to hear...when I heard this as a college freshman I never thought i would watch them on an iPad and be typing these words...they are my favorite group...PP and Mary and the Beatles right there too...

Such a beautiful song... How terribly strange that Paul Simon will be 70 in October this year. God, how I love the album 'Bookends"! It's still amazing to me that he reserved one track on that album simply for voices of old people. Preserve your memories, they're all that's left you...
