I'm hispanic and speak spanish. When I listen to italian radio stations I can understand more than 60% of what they are saying. I understand 80% of Portuguese. Spanish is derived from Italian, more especifically latin. "Cocina" means "kitchen" in italian, spanish and portuguese.

After she said that “ñ” was supposed to be “nn” I looked it up and she’s right and the example they gave was “year” which “año” was written as “anno” in Old Spanish and was derived from the Latin word annus. It’s so interesting how languages change over time.

not only the double “n” (‘nn’) a also with a "gn" as in the word "lignu" becomes "leña" (wood); and with "ni" followed by a vowel as in the word "Hispania" it becomes España (Spain)........no solo con la nn sino tambien con las letras "ng",y "ni" seguida de vocal.

I like Italian and Latin American Spanish, but my goodness, Castillian Spanish is just the sexiest and most wonderful language on Earth. My heart melts when I listen.

I like these videos. Several times I’ve had to interact with Italians or Brazilians who didn’t speak any English so I asked them if they knew any Spanish. None of them really did, but we just spoke to each other slowly in our respective languages and somehow we were able to understand each other. Once Duolingo releases a Latin course, I’m going to jump all over it.

Well, I'm Portuguese and I never learned propper Spanish or Italian but I can understand or at least get the main idea about what the person's is saying when I hear someone speaking those (mainly with Spanish, not so much with Italian but still a little). When I listen to (or even try to read) Latin it is really more difficult. I can understand a word here or there but it is really hard to understand what's being said (even if just the main idea :/

learning Portuguese is even easier for Spanish speakers as the vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure between Portuguese and Spanish is 89% alike. Between Spanish and Italian it is 82%. That extra 7% of similarity between Spanish and Portuguese makes a world of difference for intelligibility.

I have enrolled in a new university starting with a new program and I am sooooo excited to be learning Italian next year! And in a few more years hopefully I will also learn Spanish. Both are very beautiful!

If you know Spanish and you speak to a portuguese speaker slowly that person can understand you, the same way from portuguese to spanish. Abraham Gonzalez, I know that they're similar but what I meant was that when they say their sentences together, they might not build their structures in each other's equivalents. They may have different sentence structuring habits in their language. It could work if it was setup beforehand but that would ruin the "impromptu" nature of these videos

I'm Brazilian, and when i was a child i used to read instrucions (in other languages) behind box of some stuff, and i always found Spanish and italian very similar, even more than portuguese. In Simpsons they made a joke about that, spanish and italian being the same. Now in think it's closest to portuguese in grammar, but is closest to italian in pronounce.

Frank Pastrana Sim sim, italiano, português e espanhol são bem parecidos, portuguese e italiano nem tanto assim(só alguns sotaques de São Paulo lembram o italiano), mas essas três línguas diferem bastante, principalmente portugues e e italiano. Frank Pastrana Como eu sou de São Paulo então pra mim é fácil, temos os 3 R's na pronúncia Rato(R francês, mas leve) Barato(R espanhol e italiano) Arco(R do inglês, só que leve. No interior é mais forte esse R, mas no nordeste e rio de Janeiro eles raramente usam R do inglês, já escutei eles falando com "R francês" no inglês. Brasileiros em geral tem vantagem pra aprender com sotaque leve, mas São Paulo, Goiás e o Sul tem mais sons.

The thing the girl from Peru said about the “ñ” is true. In the Middle Ages, monks used to write this graph to abbreviate the two n’s. Later on, the the graph was given the current palatal sound, replacing the the normal sound of the n.

I can read a spanish newspaper (or watch a spanish tv program, especially news) with no many difficulties... More ore less I can understand 60-70% of the words. And I never studied spanish... Because there are similar words, same words, words with the same root and other words that you can understand by the context.... So is not so difficult for an italian (I'm italian) to understand a spanish discourse (but is easier with a newspaper). And I can understand better spanish because I come from Sardinia. Our dialect has a lot of spanish words... (Sardinia has been under the spanish kingdom for centuries...).

Sardinian has a strong influence from Spanish, because the island was part of Spain for centuries. For example, window is bentana in Sardinian, ventana in Spanish and finestra in Italian; table is mesa (Sardinian), mesa (Spanish) and tavolo (Italian); enemies is inimigos (Sardinian), enemigos (Spanish) and nemici (Italian); don't come: no bengias in Sardinian, no vengas in Spanish and non venire in Italian. The influence of Spanish is also strong in morphology or syntaxis.

munze srb If you studied a bit of Latin or Greek you would understand how wrong your are. And no, Proto Slavic doesn't predate those languages - proto slavic was spoken up until about the 9th century AD.

Italian and Spanish are very close in pronunciation although according to research in grammar and vocabulary the closest language to Italian is French with 89% of similarity whereas Spanish has 81%.

Not surprising. French borrowed something like 1500 Italian words, mainly in the 16th / 17th century. Both languages Italian and Spanish borrowed from French in the Middle Ages and in the 18th / 19th / 20 th century. French did not borrow anything from Spanish except specific words about Spain and South America, having mainly an international "career". But basic vocabularies in Italian and Spanish have more or less the same number of similarities as Italian and French, so in these exemples It - Sp casa / French maison; It. nuotare - Sp. nadar (from Lat. notare / French nager (from Lat. navigare).

It is due to constant exchanges between the two languages : Italian borrowed some 3500 words from French and in turn French borrowed some 1500 words from Italian.

No, the Spanish and Portuguese Empires did. As such, virtually all 'Latin' culture which was funneled into the Americas was Iberic in origin, not Italic. This is why if you ask any Latin American what they think of when they hear the term 'Latin', they're going to think of Spain and Portugal rather than Italy, France, or Romania.

She's not Hispanic. The Italian woman is more genetically similar to the ancient peoples of the Roman province of Hispania than the Peruvian native is. In fact, Spain is way too genetically complex to designate 'Hispanic' as a singular ethnic group encompassing the region. Sure, many have a native Iberian lineage, but they also have Germanic Visigothic and Celtic lineages, with many in the South even being descended from Arabs and Maghrebic Berbers. It's not different from referring to a Northern Italian Lombard as ethnically 'Italic' when they're not descended from the original Italic tribes that split off from the original Italo-Celtic Indo-European culture (Yes, the black Irish, such as Colin Farrell, are the real Celts). You can't really remove the concept of an ethnic group from a race, which is why we have descriptors such as 'culture', which can be shared by a multiplicity of races.

Phonetically speaking, Spanish and Italian have the closest similarities but, as far as vocabulary goes, French and Italian are more similar and Spanish shares the extremely similar vocabulary with Portuguese. Catalan is right in between all of them in all aspects.

Another great video. I just discovered your channel through the "Similarities between Romanian and Spanish" video. I didn't know about the origin of the tidle above the "n" in Spanish. It's interesting because they have something just the same function-wise in Japanese (written like this: 々), but in Japanese it can be used to express the repetition of almost any letter (character).

I think it's cool that with Romance languages, since they're all derivatives of Latin to different degrees, when you learn one Romance language, you can begin to understand words from other romance languages that share similar origins. I learned French back in middle school and high school, and I'll notice words in Spanish, Italian, and other languages that are very similar to certain French words. I feel like it helps keep some consistency between the different languages when translating between each other, as well as overall communication between them.

Those accents in spanish to shorten words I also found used extensively in an italian 15th century manuscript some time ago.

I love how their faces light up whenever they find a word that's exactly the same. :)

yes they can. I friend stayed in my house for three months and when he leave he could speak spanish at high level. Some words are differets but there are sinonimums that had the same meaning so is very easy to comprehend.

If they don’t know each other’s lsnguage but speak slowly and clearly, I would say they’ll grasp the meaning 70% of the time. With a minimum of training on different words and verb conjugation you can reach 90%. There are lots of “false friends” though, i.e. words that sound the same but have different meaning. For example “burro” means butter in Italian and donkey in Spanish.

I went to Italy last January. I spoke Argentine Spanish and everybody understood. I think it's not only because of language similarity but also because of our slang, which incorporates a lot of Italian words. Just wanted to say that. Cheers.

Interesting video. I noticed some similarities there. Similar diference between Ukrainian and Belarusian (84% of common lexicology). According to the official data, Ukrainian is more similar to Belarusian, Polish (70% of common lexicology), Slovakian (68%). Ukrainian and russian languages have 62% of common lexicology, it's less, but not strange. Because Ukrainian and Belarusian languages came from East Slavic, but the russian did not. The russian is more similar to Bulgarian (73-74% of common lexicology).

In first grade we learned the colors, hello, goodbye good morning ect. in Italian( I moved in second grade so i didn't take Italian anymore) later I realized that the colors sounded oddly similar😆

Rioplatense spanish is even more similar to Italian due the large influx of Italian immigrants in the beginning of XX century.

I'm Colombian and studied Italian for 6 months. I would say Italian is harder, they have additional rules that don't exist in Spanish.

I would say that Italian is a bit easier to learn than Spanish, yet I find Spanish more useful as it is spoken in many countries. But follow your heart and study the one that you like the most! ☺️

+Thomas T. Spanish, definitely. I remember in high school we had Spanish, Italian and French classes and all the kids said Spanish was the easiest and French was the hardest.

Spanish is an easy language, until you change country, "concha" in Spain means "shell" and it is also a derivative from the spanish name "Concepción", in Argentina it means "vagina", do you see how funny the spanish language is?
