Berlusconi saved Italy from communism in 1994. At the time, political parties had been wiped out by “tangentopoli”…. or “bribesville” as some dubbed it, and the Communist party was the only one untouched by scandal. It would have thus been a win by default in the upcoming elections. Berlusconi was a true liberal, abhorred by the prospect of living under communist rule and entered politics to avert what he (and evidently half the country) deemed would have been a disastrous path for Italy. So, in just 3 months, he created his own political party, won the election and de facto introduced a system of alternating parties that has (albeit with difficulties due to poorly designed and constantly changing electoral laws) endured to this day. The left never forgave him for this victory and weaponized the judicial system against him throughout his political career. This is widely documented and now acknowledged even by some members of the left. Of more than 80 indictments, all but one resulted in a conviction! Before entering politics he built a satellite city near Milan, called Milano 2, from scratch, with his father’s life savings! It was the early 70s and he designed it with loads of green areas, separate roads for cars and walk/bike paths, closed circuit TV for residents, and bike sharing. It may be normal now, but one must appreciate how innovative this was at the time! His next project was the creation of the first private commercial TV, upending the monopoly of state owned and operated TV (people do not realize that before Berlusconi, Italians had access to only 3 channels owned and run by the state). And yes, he bought a down and out soccer team and turned it around, winning something like 30 championships. Italian politics is complicated, but please, do not gather your information only from the left. Focusing only on later disproven scandals and his undeniable shortcomings when it came to protocol, does not even scratch the surface of his many important contributions to the country. Of all Western European countries, Italy had the strongest ties to communism and Berlusconi’s liberal vision and courage in creating an alternative to a state-centric economy and society was welcomed by the many Italians who repeatedly voted for him. Yes, despite his shortcomings. But please put this extraordinary man into perspective! Dig a little deeper! You will be surprised, I believe, to discover how much more freedom Italians enjoy today thanks to the many battles Berlusconi fought and won. Thank you Silvio!

Then of course he was signing deals that helped Italy, but if you can do 2+2 you can easily see that the intervention was against Italian interests in every possible sense, Italy as tons of long terms agreements with lybia which shows they had very different plans, the French and Obama wanted that, and forced their opinion out of far bigger power. BTW ask qatar that did an entire propaganda campaign against Gheddafi.. Politics is more complex that that...... Than the nato invasion..... Completely forget the 200000 Libyans who wanted Gheddafi dead and rebelled against him.

I have studied the history of Italy from the time of the Romans up until the founding of the modern nation-state and the decline through the CIA's mass letter exchange scheme targeted at the election front-runners, the Socialists. I am aware of Berlusconi's own justifications and claims in 2013 regarding the Italian colonization of Libya and his violation of the accords in 2008. Obviously, I don't take everyone's claims at face value. Covering up an act of wrongdoing with a justification is worse than the act itself.
