Silver Wolves Series: The Ultimate Guide to Camping on a Cot in Winter

In this video, I will share with you the secrets to staying warm and cozy while camping on a cot in winter. This is part of the Silver Wolves Series, where I show you how to enjoy the outdoors in any season. Camping on a cot can be a great alternative to sleeping on the ground or in a hammock, especially if you have mobility issues or want to avoid the cold air. But you need to know how to set up your cot properly and what accessories to use to keep yourself insulated and comfortable. I will show you my tips and tricks based on my years of camping experience. Thank you for watching and supporting my channel. Have a safe and happy journey!

I use the Gatorade bottle when I don't have my military pee jug. It's probably better using the Gatorade bottle so you can throw it away. Because when I come home I have to clean out the military one and spray it out with alcohol and Febreze plus if it gets too cold it might freeze and you might ruin the damn thing... so yeah big gatorade bottle is definitely the way to go. I carry that military one in my car though it's small enough I can put it in my pants leg and use it without anybody knowing what I'm doing outside of the car period of course I do it when I'm alone

I'm 75. We had a pot bellied wood stove in the livingroom. When it went out the whole house was like we were outside. Dad put hot bricks at the bottom of the bed and a big ole feather tick that kept us toasty warm. My sister and I slept together for warmth. It was nothing to wake up to find snow drifted across the bare wood floor. Dad had a bucksaw hooked up to an old Farmall tractor to saw wood for us and our neighbors. Our house was right beside the woods. We had an outhouse and a chamberpot! We were poor, but Dad always kept us warm and well fed on whatever he and my brother could drag to the house and butcher. I remember it like it was yesterday. Each kid had chores to do. We had a Victrola and records that were scratchy, lol. We lived through it...

We had a coal furnace in the basement, it heated the house and our water. At night we would fill it, then turn down the dampers, come morning it was cold as ice throughout the two-story house. We would go to the basement, open the dampers and stoke the furnace, throw in more coal, shovel out the coke put it in the skuttle, carry it to the alley. That was in Chicago, now I am 80 years old. Oh, we had gas lights throughout the house; dangerous, and a few electric lights as well. Parents and grandparents cooked on a wood and coal stove in the kitchen which was more of a mud room. Fond memories.

When I worked disaster services for the Red Cross, we gave clients 2 wool blankets. One blanket was folded over to use as a mattress, and the other blanket went on top. I worked pretty well.

I use the same setup, but with 2 packing blankets to cover and drape the cot. This traps the air under the cot. Then I start the night with a usgi medical wool blanket under the toe box of my sleeping bag and up to my waist. I use my fleece jacket as a draft guard. This works great for cold nights with my Boy Scout troop during polar bear camping.

Great stuff Blackie. Another tip is to boil enough water before bed to fill a Nalgene bottle and place it down into the sleeping bag about thirty minutes before bedtime. Just make extra sure it has no leaks. This warms the whole thing before you get in and helps to keep you warm all night. Thanks for all that you do my friend.

Hell the depression lasted into the mid 1950s in Alabama. Granny used to put flat irons on the woodstove. Us kids got under the covers. She'd wrap those irons in newspaper and sometimes our wool scarves. Once under the covers at your feet they'd stay warm well after you fell asleep.

My father had the same experience in the 50's up here in PA. Plenty of wrapped warm bed stones, and frost on the inside of the bedroom windows. Not a full depression, but lost his father at 12 yrs old, and with 7 kids in the family, times were tight. He had quite a work ethic from that. I had it easier, but the stories always humbled me, in case I had to live the same way. Nobody was playing games on their smartphones.

If you're buying a a cot, consider where the cross braces are going to hit you when you're lying on it. A metal brace directly underneath your hips can be very uncomfortable. Get a good pad or be sure the braces aren't directly under bone. Another great video. Thanks Blackie!

I have a Teton XL Outfitter cot with their thick foam mat that attaches to the top, it’s overbuilt and a little pricey but I’m 6’3” and 250 pounds, flimsy cots are no bueno. I was in the middle of a 10 day back country Idaho elk hunt many years ago and the cheap aluminum frame cot the outfitter had for me in the wall tent gave out in the middle of a cold night. If you’re a big man you need a stout horse and a strong cot. I’m casually in the market for a canvas shelter for my cot camping setup, maybe a Wheelan lean-to or a baker style tent.

I'm 65 and I've been sleeping on a Field & Stream twin size cot for over 8 years, of course I have a 2" gel pad that covers the entire surface. This setup is just as comfortable as any bed. I just don't know why i didn't get one years ago. There easy to move around and if you decide to go camping you already have a cot available. If you're young and move around a lot, get a cot then you won't have a cumbersome bed to tear down and move.

Those are great ideas. Once you get older you can't roll up on the spot you want to spend the night and throw down your bedding and crawl in. Old timers use to say you need to do some house keeping first. I would say you should think the same way if you get stuck in a car in the cold. I have slept in my van when temperatures dropped at night. I had one of those packing blankets to lay on because it's always there as well as a canvas painter's tarp. I had rolled up in the blanket and about 1 I was getting cold, grabbed the canvas and pulled it over me. Snug as a bug the rest of the night. If it had been colder that packing blanket would not have been enough even doubled. Really could use three of them or a insulating pad, even if it's one of those blue excercise mats.

Hi Blackie! How about using a big plastic sheet, starting on one side. draped over the cot, under the legs and up the other side and over the top, then down again, including doing the ends the same way from same large sheet. That makes a box of mostly trapped air under the cot with loose ends under the mattress? Sounds like an easy compact $10 fix to the air transport problem.

I feel like we all just got tucked in by Blackie..... any advice on the usefulness of the 70's era US Issue bag weather covers? I have one here that has never had a field test. I'm moving into the Gatorade phase of life now too. I don't think I can generate the orange kind yet. Great advice.

I did two litters of pups with my yorkie on a cot. She demanded my closed office with the pups. She demanded a meal at 2 AM. About 3 weeks each time. My back did not do well during that time. It' like sleeping on a rock, even with an air mattress. I don't advise a cot for anything but a camping trip.

Dude, why don't you just cut out the middleman and put a piece of plastic over the cot before you put your inflatable mattress and or padding on top. You immediately stop all air flow especially if you let it hang over to the sides and over both ends. You'd have to be car camping for a setup like this. I haven't used a cot in a long time. Mainly because my car was my parents from the 1940s or 50s that weighed a lot and was bulky AF. I bought a caught a few years ago but I only use it for guests. I bought an Italian Naval hammock and outfitted it to be a very cool cot, just slide a couple of poles through the straps on the side I attached, and then put them over two small tripods. The one time I've used it in the field I had two 55 gallon trash bags I laid over it has a wind barrier From Below. And I have a roll up foam military pad and an inflatable military pad that I carry and use. And I didn't have any problems of course it was only in the low 40's. If I had a couple of wool blankets and a down blanket of course you put the down on top there was a light rain so I had a military tarp directly on top of it but it was so lightweight it did not compress anything and kept me dry I did tie off the middle to the top of the tripod to keep it from raining in my face.
