Silver Queen Mine And Doran Scenic Loop

In this video we walk part of the Doran Scenic Loop, which is an extreme 4-wheel drive route, near Calico Ghost Town in California. We came across a large waste rock pile from a mine and went to investigate. The original portal had been completely covered over, but we found another way in. There was a hole in the roof of the timbering, quite a distance back from the original portal, that we were able to crawl into. Once in we found substantial workings in this old silver mine.

I remember exploring this mine and went in from the portal on the old miners trail above, remember long tailing. The timbers upon entering the mine looked like they never showed age and the shiny square nails, very impressive. The room opened up where you can stick a house inside it. This was in the 80s-90s that was when I hiked there. This was on the west side of Dorian Drive. Thanks for bringing this video back! Stay safe! I believe I remember telling you about a large turntable that was buried on the trail that the miners used to turn their ore wagon’s around. Thanks!

Thanks for the story of your explore here, Ron. I'm not sure what happened to the original portal. We entered through what seemed like a hole in the timbering of the back of the adit some distance from where the portal was. That's cool about the turntable. Wish I could have seen that. 👍👌

She would probably rather be hiking outdoors in the sunshine, but we do a lot of that, too. Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas to you, too!

Thanks for posting this video. I was at this same exact mine last Sunday. I saw the small entrance you guys entered. About 20 years ago I crawled into the same one. This last weekend I was able to enter from an upper stope and ended up exactly where you were at 8:45. I wanted to go into the same timbered adit but didnt have much time. Good to know theres atleast two ways in and 2 ways out of this one.

Really enjoy your videos thank you for posting them. We used to explore ghost towns and mine shafts in northern Nevada. Be careful about disclosing too much of the locations BLM Target KZread videos and then they decommission the areas usually erasing all history above ground. Your videos are especially nice for me because I was in an auto accident and can no longer explore.

I'm glad that our videos can give you a chance to enjoy abandoned mines since you are not able to go there yourself anymore. I completely understand the issue of giving out the real names and locations of the mines we explore. I take that issue on an individual mine by mine basis. In the case of the mines in this area near Barstow the underground workings have been so abused that I think it would be best to gate them closed. They are pretty much trashed, painted, burned and generally ruined. If they were gated before they were trashed they could have been opened again in 100 years and you would have had a nice piece of history preserved. Generally, I use fake mine names and locations if I think there is even a remote possibility that it would be put on the list for being gated. Thanks for watching, John, and for your thoughts about the locations and gating issue.

Nice explore Tom & Julie . That rock scree above the hole that you entered made me just a little nervous , wouldn't take much to bring it down & block that hole . Must have been some tremendous rain storms in that area to have filled that "Doran Scenic Loop" with all of those boulders ; I've driven that "Loop" in a 1954 Chevy 4-door Sedan back in 1965 . -- .

It definitely wouldn't take a lot for the rocks to slide down and cover that hole. That made me a bit nervous, too. That's cool that you have done the loop. I don't think that Chevy 4 door would be able to tackle the loop today. I was hoping to see someone on the road with a big souped up rock crawler, but that didn't happen. Thanks for watching and commenting, Doc!

Hi Frank. The Doran Scenic Loop is a favorite of people driving the rock crawlers. Big trucks and Jeeps built for extreme offroading. A stock 4x4 vehicle would get beat up pretty good on this road. That is why we walk. It's even hard to walk in some places. The mine is a little dangerous at the entrance where there could be a rock slide at any time. Once inside it's not too bad. Thanks for watching. We appreciate your support!

Another great video, Tom! It looks like somebody dug out that portal, no? That timbering near the end was pretty nice to see. Love that classic, timbered look. That one photograph you inserted that showed Julie ahead of you in the tunnel really gave an accurate sense of how tall those tunnels were! I think you said they were 8 feet tall in the video. That’s pretty big! Always interesting to see those little bits of false floors in the overhead. Really underscores how dangerous those are when unknowingly walking on top of them if they’re in a tunnel floor.

The place where we entered was back from where the original portal was and it was through a hole in the top of a timbered portico that we entered. I think the original portal was bulldozed shut as there was really no sign of it. Someone must have pryed a couple boards loose and then broke them off. It's a little scary because someone could easily cause a rockslide when we were inside and bury the hole we entered. It really was a tall mine in most places. I always like to see the neat rows of timbers, too. Thanks for watching and commenting, Frank!

Tom Wigren makes me wonder how long that hole will stay open before a rockslide covers it up again. It looks like there was a lot of rocks going up the slope above that opening.

I know what you mean about the lighting. It's definitely not easy to get it right. Digital cameras like to have enough light, but too much and it washes everything out and makes a white circle. It also varies from a light colored adit to a dark one. Then if you come to a big stope you can never seem to get enough light to get it to show up on the video. The mine near Wall Street sounds cool. We are only in California in the winter, otherwise we are in Oregon. Keep in touch and maybe we can get together sometime.
