Silky Gomboy 210 vs Silky Super Accel 210

This is an informational comparison between the Silky Gomboy 210 Large Teeth and the Silky Super Accel 210 Large Teeth saws. I discuss the similarities, the differences, and my preference between the two.

Amazed by how much the prices have gone up - doubled - since you did this!

I noticed that and it happened recently. The prices were pretty close (within 3 or 4 dollars) at Christmas time. I think the spike has something to do with current world events and I've noticed a lot of other goods on Amazon that have seen similar price increases since around the beginning of March. If the world starts returning to normal this summer, I bet these end up back at a reasonable asking price.

Thanks so much for your video. It convinced me to buy the Gomboy over the Super Accel. I did go for the 240mm in Large Tooth and just received it today.

+Jeremy Madsen You are welcome. I honestly think the Gomboy is worth the extra few dollars and also worth carrying the little bit of extra weight. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video! I'm glad this information was useful.

you missed one detail about the gomboy 210 vs the accel 210: the raised plastic thumb area for the gomboy. When i first started my silky saw research for backpacking/hiking, I was strongly considering the silky accel 210 and the pocketboy 170. I ultimately went for the gomboy 240 medium teeth as it was longer however I wasn't quite happy with the teeth size of the gomboy 240 (the teeth seemed to clog up on the medium teeth) and found the gomboy 300mm large on sale and went with that. It's twice as heavy as my original goal was, but man the cutting power is worth the weight penalty.

c2thew Sometime in the next couple of weeks or so, I intend to do a "teeth size" video. There's a little "common knowledge" out there that leads outdoor enthusiasts to the wrong idea. "Common Knowledge" is that fine teeth are for hardwoods, medium teeth are for cured non-hard wood. and large teeth are for green wood. All of that is true for tree surgeons, arborists, cabinet-makers, and carpenters. For outdoor enthusiasts (backpackers, hikers, canoeists, and even most bushcrafters etc etc), that "common knowledge" just creates more work for us and causes us to put too many calories in to each cut. All of my "outdoor" saws are large tooth except for one and that one is a 130mm pocketboy with medium teeth. My experience is just like yours with medium and fine tooth saws for the sort of work we do processing firewood and clearing trail etc. Medium and fine teeth tend to choke up with debris too much. With a really small saw being used on fairly small diameter material, it's not a big deal... but the bigger the saw and the bigger the log (or other material), it generates more work for the user. Really deep teeth that can shed the saw dust are the way to go. ... Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos! I appreciate it.

betweenfiveandseven oh yeah, if you look at the tip of the teeth on the silky saws, there is a slight pattern to it. Notice how some of the teeth have normal pointy tips however every so often there are a pair of teeth that have a flatter/pointy surface which I believe helps to move the material out of the cut area. It's a very subtle engineering design and something alot of people haven't caught on to. Keep up the good work!

What a thorough and fantastic comparison! Thank you. Will follow. Do they cut any differently?

+John London Even though the Gomboy large teeth is slightly less points per inch and therefore theoretically is slightly more aggressive, the difference is indiscernible. The gomboy teeth are also slightly deeper cut (which I didn't mention in the video) so there could be some types of wood it should handle a little better when they are green because it has more space between the teeth to collect debris before shedding it as the teeth exit the kerf. I think though that just real world use in material appropriate sized for a 210 mm saw, it would be close to impossible to tell the difference.

Ah, I see. Very helpful. Thanks. I'm going to look for you to do a blade review in the future to discuss the Silky options on blades and their usefulness. I would like to know their applications to different types of wood (hard vs soft and green vs seasoned)

John London I've been planning that exact video for several months. What I discovered when I looked through all of my blades is that I have a super fine for a small saw, a fine for a larger saw, a few medium teeth in several sizes and the large teeth for everything but the pocketboy 130... So, just this Tuesday, I ordered all 4 blades for the pocketboy (I'll be able to show shiny new blades on camera rather than now stained and scratched ones) and all three blades for the gomboy 270. I'm thinking about also getting the full compliment of new blades for the BigBoy but I've run out of gear budget money for a few weeks. So, that video is still on my to do list and we have to wait a bit for the Japanese exporter I'm using to put them on a boat... Arriving sooner than those blades, I'll guess, will be a Silky F180 I ordered a couple of weeks ago. I'll probably be comparing that to one or two Fiskars, probably the Corona 7", and maybe even a couple of other plastic handle folders. In the near future, I'm also going to have another non-saw video. I'm still prototyping, but think I'm close to creating, a quick-deploy One Man Super Shelter... or if not "quick-deploy", at least less than 10 minute set up.

can you un fold either saw one handed ?

  • @betweenfiveandseven

Yes. If you had to. .. I'll give you a little bit of perspective on this: My father is missing his right arm. He therefore does everything one handed. What he might do is grab the blade as close to the end as possible while it's folded and give it a little shake - enough to get the tip of the blade out. Then he would shift his grip to the handle and find something to snag the tip of the blade on to open it (maybe his boot heel or a nearby post etc) and then pull it open.
