As an automotive aficionado with a moderate collection there's one thing that few people seem to notice concerning this entire series. This is, by far, the best advertisement I have ever seen for Nissan Patrol. The starting price and the available accessories make this an excellent choice for those who need a rugged vehicle that is reliable and able to transverse myriad difficult terrains. Unfortunately, it is not available in my country and, because of this, I've only had the chance to spend any significant time with two of them. The first was a much older model year, about the age of these, and came well equipped to travel off and on road. It was adept in mud, sure-footed on rock (and I do mean rock), and even did fine in wooded terrain where one needed a tight wheelbase in order to navigate without damaging the body. The thing is, it even was fine on the road though it had the obvious drawbacks associated with off-road and well over-sized tires. The second, much newer, seemed to be as capable but was much more refined. That's well and good but it also means that you don't get to fix it with bailing twine and a couple of bolts and washers. That's the price you pay when you move to more complicated tech - it no longer is easy to repair and some parts are not repairable at all, by the regular well-rounded mechanic, but need to be replaced. When it is no longer an actual cable that connects the throttle, you have problems when that breaks. When the shifting linkage is actually a linkage made of metal then you can repair it when it breaks - even if it means you have to knock a hole in the floor and shift with a lever you tack-welded by using the battery cable. You lose some of that ability to affect repairs while in duress with the modern niceties and, of course, you gain (ideally) more reliability with those modern niceties. So, to be honest, the absolute best choice for 99.9% of the people who would buy these would be the more modern choice. For the rest of us, the ones who may well buy one and rally it in the NEFR or something similar - which is part enduro and part torture and repairs must be made aside the road or while still in the mud, there are well kept models from yesteryear with a bevy of parts still available and a million after-market modifications and learned folks to tune them. But, as I said, they're nearly impossible to get in my country and I am unwilling to pay the import tax when I could just as easily buy an old Discovery edition Rover or, if I spend stupid money, an AMG G85 and have all the reliability and capability. Still, for the price, these Patrols were fantastic. In fact, they still are. The reliability that they show in this series (and the previous series of 12 additional episodes) is fantastic. I do mean that, I'm a die-hard Jeep fan (but not an idiot - I know there are other capable vehicles) and I'd buy one of these today and restore it to factory condition (then maybe mod it a little) without a doubt, if I could. Nissan, get and give away copies of this documentary (at least a few episodes) and then show advertise the car during it. It was actually the documentary (the first series) that prompted me to actually buy my first Nissan truck back in the day. It was as close to this as I could get but was just the "Pickup" with the inline 6 and some added goodies from the dealer. What a fantastic truck it was, too. Fantastic... I'd have bought a Patrol if one had been available. It is the series that resulted in my renting a Patrol not just once but several times. I've had a great time all three times that I rented one. That said, if anyone has a nice one from about 1981 that they want to sell....

Galen Gregory says: "advertisement I have ever seen for Nissan Patrol.." "That said, if anyone has a nice one from about 1981 that they want to sell...." == Yeah, that's pretty impressive. They didn't show the the parts where they stranded by mechanical failures. I'm pretty sure, they had a few at least. But these days the people in desert war zone rely on Toyota trucks. Like this one, i.pinimg.com/564x/e0/de/e0/e0dee0a1663c15b91ae358b4cd17f60d--toyota-x-toyota-trucks.jpg I've seen some articles explaining why Toyota, they have better air filter system that don't get clogged by fine sand grit easily. I'm sure, Nissan comes pretty close.

I wonder why they decided to name this series in English instead of Japanese. (The Katakana in the titles reads; "Shi-ru-ku Ro-do".) Is there no native Japanese phrase meaning the same thing?

Giuseppe LoGiurato Hi, I asked my wife, who is Japanese. She said there is no original word in Japanese. It's a foreign loan word. For example the Wikipedia entry has 'Silk Road' in katakana: ja.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%B7%E3%83%AB%E3%82%AF%E3%83%AD%E3%83%BC%E3%83%89

I love this series. The narrator does an excellent job, however it seems he goes out of his way to intentionally mispronounce nearly every place name in this series, and it's not because he's English.

morons you that ZIL didn´t break down but got overheated... all you neded to do is exactly what thhta driver did... just let it cool ... that truck is a machine well suited to that area... and what the picture swhowed was that it got temporarely stuckin the sand... that is why it got heating problems... so in fact no breakdown... how typical of western journalism... everything russian is simply bad also how would it look like if your travel "adventure" would have no troubles with transportation??? to which you´re so used to watching western documentaries... so I understand perfectly why that minor overheating issue had to be mentioned in so dramatic sircumtances...
