I love this topic! I definitely identify as a recovering perfectionist, and watercolor has been a real vessel in that recovery!

Best advice ever. I have only ever used the best supplies. I am now sometimes using 300 lb paper and WOW is it wonderful. Because I started painting on Arches paper, I can now use the backs of my old painting to mount paintings done on Masa paper, or for greeting cards or gift tags. Nothing is ever wasted. I also paint every day. I come up with my own techniques because every single teacher has their own ways. Some of them are even wrong with their advice. This is a well done video and you hit the nail on the head, especially for all us beginners and learning artists. Thank you so much.

I just had my 70th Birthday. I thank you for your encouragement at this time in my life. I've been an Artist a very long time. But 1st got serious about watercolor in 2008. My fortay was painting photo realistic Portraits in watercolor. Especially sleeping babies. Before that was oil and then acrylic painting wildlife. Doing that kind of painting didn't take much thought or creativity. The arthritis in my hands have became so painful I can barley write anymore let alone draw..The frustration was crippling me more than the disease. I almost got rid of all my supplies. But now have decided to keep some and play for fun. Thank you so much for your encouragement. Time to enjoy.

Thanks for your lovely share. That is right, time to enjoy now. Art keeps us joyful and uplifted. Wishing you lots of healing vibes for arthritis. I can imagine how frustrating that is.

Your painting turned out beautifully. I'm going to be honest here....I m so hard on myself not being good enough add not able to paint beautiful flowers that I wasted all winter talking myself out of painting. And now spring is here and things are starting to bloom and instead of feeling ready and confident to go out and paint, I never practiced and sabotaged myself to feel defeated now. So stupid, really. So yes, I was raised that " perfect" (to my mothers impossible standard) was the only acceptable standard. Struggling to get past that. Your talk today was perfect. I have already watched/listened twice! :)

Oh Susan! We cannot be perfect because firstly there is so such thing. And secondly, if we get to perfection everytime, how boring would that be!?!?!? It is in our flaws, mistakes and quirkiness that makes our art so special and unique. So if perfectionism is stopping you from painting, just plauy with colours, swatch your colours, make fun marks, and not try to paint anything specific. You will enjoy!

I struggle with it also. If I paint loose, it never looks quite right and I overwork it. If I paint botanicals, I obsess over it. Ugh, I’m working on it…I just want to enjoy it because I love to paint especially with watercolor.

I know... I can so tell when I feel tight and stressed over a painting, and the ones where I am like.... just feeling like its a long huge exhale! And we should try to aim for that. Just a big release.

I love your advice about painting small and often. I find I'm most comfortable painting small and simple, but have been feeling the pressure to paint "big to paint loose" which I realize makes me feel stressed and unhappy with my art because the details and blobs are more visible

  • @crystaltanart

Yes! Just do what makes you feel most comfortable! I definitely love paiting smaller at the start and only gain confidence to paint bigger down the road.
