They mostly follow the same grammatical structure, but no, people will not be able to understand other dialects knowing just standard mandarin. Theres many (like 30+ I think)

That's interesting that so many variations developed. So it would be similar to how Latin branched off into the romance languages. Thanks for the reply.

The way Yang plays the stereo type; the stereo typical "fresh off the boat" Chinese accent, is brilliant and, I wish one interviewer had the honesty to ask him about that. How he plays it. How he does it and what's going on in his head, to do it so accurately. But, no one will ask that. They all dance around it and pretend it''s not there.

I think Erlich Bachmann, is one of the all time great television characters, and it's such a shame that he's gone, but the show seems to be just fine without him. Xin Yang, is absolutely brilliant, as is the writing and cast. I'm enjoying the new season.
